Basically, they got 217 ex drivers to vote for who they thought was the best drivers ever.

it actually goes to 75. but the site only does top 40.

To me, there is some bloody pathetic voting further down the order which you dont see on this site.

Vettel is rated too high, Senna is rightly #1

thoughts?

think hamilton is up a bit high (at this stage of his career)

Senna definitely #1, Schumacher Definitely #2

lol @ jenson, yeah I thought he was a bit high.
Alonso has more WDC than Lewis, deserves the higher spot for the moment.
See how they go over the next few years with each at the big end of the manufacturers.

I don't respect lists based on opinions. Give me statistics!

I respect that Senna was a phenomenal driver, but I think him topping #1 lists is more because he died driving.

I still rate Fangio and Prost, and possibly Brabham over Senna.

Big call, but I think it's valid. I only started watching the sport around the time Senna passed, so I've only been subject to the post-mortem hype. It's always nagged me that everyone went on about him so much.

Still - if you got to choose, behind the wheel of an F1 car is definitely one way to go out!

There was little doubt in my mind that in terms of raw pace, Senna will probably never be touched. The way he dominated some qualifying sessions astounds me still. And even when he had shit cars, he would throw them so much further up the field then he should ever have.

Gerhard Berger is not high enough

The picture of Sebastian Vettel has him locking an inside front wheel, much LOL

Mika Hakkinen not high enough either......

If it wasnt for the dominance of Ferrari/MS (because end of the day the car was brilliant in a few of those seasons) Mika would be a 3-5 time WDC and an all time legend.

Agree with Senna #1, It was always incredible to watch him on a hot lap, It used to make me grit my teeth sitting in the living room, He was always able to get that much closer to the edge than anyone else I think I've seen to date.

Would have been some fantastic battles between him and schumi if not for the accident

Was good to see Villeneuve up there, never had the advantage of having the best car (bar '79) but was easily the fastest driver of his generation and probably the most exciting ever.

And this is where we can see similarities between Senna and Schumi. MS was equal, if not better, in the wet then Senna. He was just as quick and sometimes drove shit cars (Benetton anyone?) and what about the calls for "do this many laps at qualifying pace".

Like the Tyson vs Ali dream match, Senna vs Schumi would've been a great battle.

Yeah - but Senna drove some utter turds in his time too

Toleman was at best a midfield car, but he should have won in Monaco with it
The lotus was nothing special
The 93 McLaren was probably the 4th best car yet he managed to win in it

Michael won in 92 and 93 in cars that were probably 3rd/4th best - one race each season, so he also dragged a shitbox up the field.

94 ... well yeah, the car was good, even if it needed to lean on the rules to be so.

Also there will never be another MS, people might not agree with it now but when looking back on history people will see how great a driver he actually was.

Exactly right. He gets the votes because he paid the ultimate price for his sport. MS should be Number one.
