i have some DVD's i want to back up to a normal 4.7GB disc, can anyone recommend a program?
i used to use DVD Shrink, but it seems to have issues with newer DVD's, i'm guessing something security related?

DVD Shrink. It's what I'm using as we speak to make legitimate backup copies of The Sopranos... for someone else.
Edit: The issues with "new" DVDs will be region lockout I would imagine. Look for a Windows hack to reset your region changes and you should be golden.

DVDFab Platinum (go for v3 from memory) can do pretty much anything, not sure if it can do all the newest ones though, but I haven't used a version since then. It backed everything I ever needed up, and converted straight into AVI if I wanted it to.

+1 for DVDFab, used it just the other week to back-up some TV seasons, was much much much quicker than last time I used DVDShrink, etc...

+1 DVDFab. Its one of the few decent ripping softwares that gets updated for newer copy protection methods.
I used to love dvd decrpytor, but it only works on a few new releases, same deal with dvdshrink.

using dvdfab at the moment.. heaps quicker than dvdshrink, and alot easier to just get the main movie and no other shit.

I thought it is legal to make a back-up providing you own a legit copy already?

Technically no. Those provisions for legal backups are in US (among others) copyright laws, not Australian copyright law.
Irrespective of wether it's legal or not, you still need ripping software to get around copy protection
