Since everyone is going on about tv's at the moment, I saw a pretty cool Samsung LED tv display in Garbo City today. Anyway, they look pretty cool, especially in sunlit conditions, and they're ultra thin. Picture was great as far as I could see.

Fairly pricey which is normal for anything thats new though. Anyone know anything special about these? Pro's / Con's? If they drop to a reasonable price next year might get one for the house (if they're good).

LEDs use 40% less power than LCDs so im guessing they last longer as they run at lower temps.

ive got the samsung led tv and its great. upgraded from a plasma and its so much better - sharper picture and the slimness is nice :) i'm sure more will flood the market soon so you'll probably see the prices coming down a bit

best picture you can buy! do it now and be a sick pingpingpingping, or wait 12mths for the price to halve but by then every man and his dog will have one.

I've had mine (Series 9 55") for almost 12 months and I still love it!

There are 2 types of LED lit LCD;

The original LED (Series 9) are locally dimmed back lit RGB LED, using more LED's in red green and blue. These offer a wider colour gammut. Being locally back lit, it can turn off LED's when required, giving higher dynamic contrast ratio.

The current series (6, 7,8) are edge lit LED, they are cheaper to produce, using less LED's and diffuser panel to light the middle of the panel. Because they are edge LED you get the ultra slim chassis and because of the amount of LED's you get a 5 star safety rating.
They still offer better dynamic contrast ratio than CCF lit LCD and use 40% less power.

Well worth the coin, Wouldnt buy a Plasma or CCF LCD again.

LED LCD does true white and true black where most normal LCD + Plazma have never been able to do it.

Also have really high refresh rates and obviously true hd.

A couple of corrections, 9 series use white LED's not RGB, only Sony uses RGB LED's. Also the 6, 7 and 8 series arent LED backlit they are CCFL, i think you are referring to the 7000/8000 series, is a bit confusing but they are the Edge Lit models :)

Edge Lit LED TV's have poorer viewing angles than even CCFL panels doo, you can notice a loss of contrast as soon as you go a reasonable amount off axis.

Locally dimmed LED's are by far better than Edge Lit (and have the price tag to match!) but they still have flaws such as halo effects and what not as there isnt 1 LED for 1 pixel. Usually most locally dimmed backlit LED panels have a couple of hundred clusters which ends up with around 3000 or so LED's total to light a panel with over 2 million pixels (1080p).

For those wanting to go Edge Lit (for Samsung this would be the 7000/8000 series) i would say get the 9-series on a sale as it will be only a little bit more in price as it is the past generation (soon to be replaced by the 9000 series) but imo destroys the edge lit panels in image quality.

I like both LCD and Plasma, but personally i would be going a Panasonic G10/V10 because for the price they have pretty much the same image quality (once calibrated or in THX mode) as the Samsung 9 series has but are substantially cheaper. Also i think Harvey Norman were doing a deal where you could get a bonus home theater set-up or something like that recently, not sure if is still on but it was a sweet deal :)
