Well now I am not completly ashamed to show my car to people I thought I might post up a show case thread.

I have been building this car now for just on 2 years. Yep I am a world record slow mechanic ! The main goal for the car was to have an ANDRA tech car that I can race any time I want. This was achieved earlier this year and the car is Lic to run down to the 8's and up too 140mph.

As much as possible as been done at home. I do lack skills like tig welding and dyno tuning though. So those items have been farmed out to some quaility people.

Of course Maytech has kindly supplied as much of the low cost japanese parts as possible.

The paint was done at home in the shed. Much thanks again to Flippa and Maytech. It was modelled of the 199x Taisan R32 GTR that Tsyuchia drove.
Obsiously people will know it as the advan colors. Its now become a little aussie and we have started calling it 'The RedbacK' .

The car has managed to see a few drag events. The current PB is 10.35.
It also made a quick run at Motorvation.

Power wise it makes around 450rwhp on the Hyprerdrive dyno. Its a fairly safe tune on low boost.

Not sure were I want to take the car now. The plan is to just enjoy it for a while and slowly improve some of the little things.

Here is a quick run down of SOME of what its got.

Driveline - Its a pretty simple setup really.

Unopened low k RB26 import motor(doesn't even have cams or cam gears).
GT35 turbo on 6boob manifold and greddy gate
Power FC DJ and nismo injectors.
Nismo twin plate
R33 gearbox with OS giken gearset
custom single TS
R32 GTR rear end with mech centre

Body and other

Stripped out inside
Custom bonnet
Wide rear fenders
Gutted boot lid
Lexan side windows
Manual window winders

Well enough typing, I'll post up some pics. They say more :)

26 should fit under standard hood yeh?

It does look good mate!
A massive approvement from the original build - now the performance has a neat exterior to match.
Colour combo looks good too - it will be vert noticable from the stands.
We better arrange those shoots asap - PSC and Zoom.

Cheers,

looks nice with the paint, reminds me of the JGTC (or group a?) R32 GTR that keiichi tsuchiya used to use - "taisan skyline gtr" - very similar! :D

It just needs an auto now

Indeed it does. I have been thinking about biting the bullet.

Who built your auto ?

how are you finding cooling with the 26? any overheating issues as of yet?

No issues at all. Have a koyo ally rad. Also have qual thermo fans. The run of my datalog dash. Has ramp up and down control works really well !
If anything i probably have it runnning a bit too cool at the moment. Never gets over 86 in the engine and stays about 72 in the rad.

I have run it with a CA rad and single thermo too for drags, it just holds the temp and saves some weight. Just a hassel to swap them over.

whats wrong with auto,i would rather go a built auto box rather than manual box for drag racing, drifting would be a different story

dude im sure tones is talking about a decent manual, eg. jerico, doug nash. gforce, my vl had a powerglide in it and it ran a 10.1@134 ive changed it for a doug nash 5speed id never go back to an auto for the drags, butters youve done the hard work with the scatter blanket clutch ect,all youd have to do is make an adaptor plate to suite what ever manual box you choose, by the time you buy an auto, get a converter ect,the difference to a decent manual isnt that much in price,

Tones

whats wrong with auto,i would rather go a built auto box rather than manual box for drag racing, drifting would be a different story

for the price of a built auto you could run a jerico/doug nash ect... not a run of the mill h pattern manual. add in the costs of converters, ect plus nitrous to get it up onto the converter your looking at big dollars.

there are advantages in both:wave: it also depends on what set up you want, street, full cage drag car etc

yep perfect man liberty transmissions are the goods expensive but awsome bit of gear, i reack your proberly best trying to find a gforce gf5r resonable priced and easy to work on allthou they are a clutchless transmission there no good for events like motorvation or powercruise, if your gona do stuff like that a jerico or a doug nash transmission would be more suited,

zeroyon
28-11-2009, 06:00 PM
here no good for events like motorvation or powercruise

The liberty or the gforce or both ?

Hows the shifting work on jerico and doug nash ?
Sequential options ? Air shifting ?

Doing research into this manual option, I am afraid I am a bit of a noob if its not a jap box or hollinger.

So any input is welcome and appreciated :)

Thanks heaps for all the gearbox info guys. Not quite in the market yet.

It looks like the GForce and the like make my car 100 % drag yer ?
So might hold off for a little while yet.

This is the next upgrade I am working on. The Fuel system.
Phase one is injectors rail and reg.
Phase two will be fuel cell and braided lines.

Really happy with the rail and reg. Both look high qual and industrial flow spec. The injectors fingers crossed will be good to. They are 1000cc. Hope I can get the car to idle .... lol

Got tune booked for early in the new year pre-motorvation.
Car seems to idle ok, should be better after its on the dyno.

Hoping to put more then 15psi boost in this time lol !

Still on the single 044 in tank pump, not sure its going to be enough.

Was tuned by Andy at hyperdrive but run up at allstar due to some wheel spin fun.

Now 561 rwhp up from 450rwhp !!

Still a stock RB26(including stock cams n cams gears) with just bolt on gt35 turbo and injectors.

But yer car is on full drag slicks.

Cheers Dats. Yer I agree 100% on the launch my 60's were crap. On the old tyre setup was running 1.3x or at least low 1.4's. On the new tyres I can get below a 1.5, just got it all setup wrong.

Yep 4Slide, be placing an order soon :)

I still felt the rush of driving this car when I woke up this morning. Used to scare me before but now its on a whole new level.

Headed out to whoop ass wed tonight to try and set a new PB.

Got some more setup into the rear and got my 60fts back.

But 1/2 track and on is just crazy. 3rd and 4th laying lines.

1st run wasn't a great launch and it baked in 4th

<object width="640" height="505"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/wTzZDrTb-m4&hl=en_GB&fs=1&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/wTzZDrTb-m4&hl=en_GB&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="505"></embed></object>

Second run got loose in 3rd and got off it and rolled through for a 10.3 at 109mph ! Never even got into 4th.

<object width="640" height="505"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/dvqNtN6ANqU&hl=en_GB&fs=1&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/dvqNtN6ANqU&hl=en_GB&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="505"></embed></object>

Final run, we let the tyres right down but the track was well gone. So much moisture coming up. Basically baked off the line, through 2nd and into 3rd by which time I had enough :)

<object width="640" height="505"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/G5TvnbXERdY&hl=en_GB&fs=1&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/G5TvnbXERdY&hl=en_GB&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="505"></embed></object>

Have to say thanks to Mayhem from maytech for helping out as always.

So if anyone has any suggestions how to get more traction through 3rd and 4th I am all ears :)

Considering putting a surf board on the back, not sure if they actually work but.

DanWA
24-03-2010, 10:05 PM
getting ever close to the 9... got no ideas for end track traction though... looks like it launches hard off the line though!

Daveo
25-03-2010, 09:50 AM
Watched this last night.... Launches so very hard loooked like it was all over the show on the last run

AGIT8D
25-03-2010, 10:12 AM
My first suggestion for traction would be to hit up a prepped track - but I only base this on the assumption that the track wasn't prepped being a Wednesday. Possibly more downforce over the rear would help

esky
25-03-2010, 10:17 AM
rear wing maybe, althought not sure how much if any extra grip this would produce.

what size are the rear tyres?

Brockas
25-03-2010, 10:43 AM
Probably know a lot more about it than me, but maybe consider doing a smaller burnout at the start?

Tyres could be getting too hot by the end of the run and that's why you're loosing traction in 3rd/4th?

zeroyon
25-03-2010, 10:58 AM
My first suggestion for traction would be to hit up a prepped track

Amen, that would definetly help. The stewards pulled me up after the first sideways fun. Very helpful and pretty much said need to get out on prepped track.

I still really like to get more grip in it over the top end but. As I plan to step the power up in the future so it needs to be better then it is before i do that.

rear wing maybe, althought not sure how much if any extra grip this would produce.

what size are the rear tyres?

Yer I am not sure about the rear wing, guess I will just have to experiment :)

As for the tyres I went back down the 26x8.5. I had the 28x9's on and they definetly gave much better top end grip. The only issue is as they were so big I had to raise the sus to the sky. I couldnt get the alignment right and I lost all my launch grip. So it seems what I gain on the launch I lose at the top. very frustrating ...... and yes people have suggested a 27" tyre ... lol

but maybe consider doing a smaller burnout at the start?

Wait .... what ??

Did brockas just suggest SMALLER SKID ?? Clearly its opposite day hahaha

Could be somthing in that, might look into it. Cheers :)

With no aero on the car, it's likely she's unloading in 3/4th from lack of downforce. I've never been a big believer in wings having much of an effect on street/strip cars - but obviously this is getting towards some pretty serious numbers. As with any quick street car - you can feel it get quite light and "floaty" past around half track.

The downside to this is I love the look of the car now. Really tough looking car, which you could in all honesty believe would get away with being driven on the street regularly.

Another thing - whats the rear setup? I'm assuming not a 4-link (too lazy to check). One thing I've heard with IRS set ups (in RWD applications) is they will tend to warble about on the tyres with lower PSI. As opposed to a full live rear end which tramps the full width of the tyre to the ground. I was beginning to have these dramas with the datto - but obviously on a much smaller scale.

Some updates.

Now I have finished moving house the car is coming out of storage.

In the mean time managed to pick up these cool flared fenders from japan through Maytech.

They are actually metal(so they will actually fit!) and one piece. Heck knows how the japanese did it. Looking forward to having them on the car.

Currently they are in the mexican garage getting painted.

As arrived.

Prepped track solved all. Made no major changes to the car from the 10.04 run.

The second 9.76 was with a wing on the back we were trying, robbed me a couple mph but could definetly notice more grip up above 180km/h

what fuel are you going to use.

yeh that car is the bosses car in our drag team, its got the rota back in it while the toyota v8 is getting billet heads made locally, but after bending the crank on the rota i dunno what we gonna do now, build it again i suppose .

I knew you were one of the mr antilag guys but i feel a bit weird walking up to people and dropping the barra signal haha ,
On the e85 fuel all it will take is one of the manufacturers to submit a sample for homogulation (spelling) or certifying before andra can allow it, as because there are so many different forms of e85 its impossible to test it consistently if they need to . I have someone who knows someone who knows someone who makes the e85 fuel onto it so hopefully it could be good to go soon .

Moved house, wife got pregnant = game over for a while.

Cars been in storage around 12 months and finally dragged it out to do some work on it.

Need some help. Have two custom sway bars from whiteline/Selby - neither fit due to my large sump and 26.

No one i can find local wants to modify them. One place will make from scratch if I provide the material.

Any idea ....

A> What steel I should use ?
B> Where can I get this steel in 27mm ?

zeroyon
10-08-2011, 10:05 AM
Oh and this is the other work doing.

Last time out at a Time Attack event, lost a little bit of coolant and suspect the heads lifting under boost. So to be on the safe side, throwing in a metal HG and some head studs. Also give me a chance to check the condition of the motor.
Will of course though mean the motor is no longer a 100k stock motor.

you can buy round bar in lengths from almost anywere for your sway bar , salvage yards or steel supplier they wont have 27mm though something like 30mm would work.

Digging around the material I need is spring Steel Sup-9 or aparently x5k will do as well.

Yet to find a supplier for 27mm but.

Head gasket is going hellishly slow. Crank pulley fought me every mm and ended up stripping thread on puller.
Trip to auto store later and its off.

Then go to take head off and my 10mm hex socket dies.......

I think with current baby situation be 3 years before I can get that done lol.

Wow nearly 2 years since I have posted in here.

Since having my daughter, car time has been low and it shows.
Been around 12 months since I have done anything with the Redback.

Started her up last week and I have a fuel issues, pump was screaming and fuel pressure was bouncing from 15-30psi.
Was hoping it was just low on fuel and surging but topped up the tank and same result.

So pulled out the pump and put in a new filter. The problem was clearly the strainer, the fuel pump sounds nice now and pressures are sweet.

So this is what a fuel filter and pump strainer look like after 2 years of E85 weekend use, 1 year of adhoc use, then 1 year of sitting(4 years total e85 for those that can't do math).
The cut in the fuel filter is from the hacksaw, so ignore lol. The fuel filter is not to bad in my mind.
The rubber fuel lines all still look good, which is pretty amazing. I may change them out of paranoia though.

i run an aeromotive pro series, yes its loud but by the looks of things its not going to matter too much. run mine with the speed controller too, works a treat.

looks like the prices have increased a fair bit though, most likely OTT for what you need (and myself) but id rather have a decent headroom to play with rather than running shit on the edge.

Run real 044's and the vpw m2 fuel additive. No dead pumps then.

So yer over 10 years and 2 kids later. Still got this thing !

The fuel issues turned out to be a faulty regulator. Upgraded pumps needlessly.
Went with 2 x genuine 044's and a surge tank in the boot. All seems to work pretty well except the surge tank/fuel gets really hot on the dyno.
Considering adding a fuel cooler but not sure how much its needed for a 1k run.

So what's next..... I have entered Racewars 2020.
I've not had a lot of luck to date with Racewars ..... 3rd time's a charm they say ?

Key changes :
Solid engine mounts, passenger one broke at Racewars 2018, popping cooler pipes.
New rear end. The prime garage car has claimed back the Jun Subframe. Be building a R33 one supplied by Clint with conversion bushes.
All adjustable arms and hopefully a 350z diff conversion.
Cutting out the rear fenders, Racewars 2018 the tyres rubbed and saw me out after 2 backed off runs.
The metal has been bent back inside the fibreglass overfenders but its not time to cut it out. I can gain over an inch of height drop doing this.

I'll also be stealing a Link G4 from my other car. Keen to be able to make adjustments at the event.

Seeing as we are bringing this forum back to life I will try and post some progress pics.
