I've put an offer in on a 2007 Ford Focus XR5 Turbo (LS) which is for sale at a dealership in Perth.

Got a couple of issues though. Finance has been conditionally approved, just need to drop off paperwork so no worries there.

But, the car has had a heap of work done to it, full turbo back exhaust with high flow cat, CAI, FMIC, re-map and an externally venting Dump Valve. And being sold through a dealership the car should "technically" be 100% legal which I dont think the DV would be.

I wouldnt give a shit normally but the issue is that the Licence papers state that the car is a 4cyl rather than a 5cyl Turbo. So when the car was first licensed it was obviously entered as a normal Focus vs the XR5 by mistake (engine # and VIN confirmed as accurate).

Called the dpi and they said the inspection would be free (as long as I bring down manufacturer specs showing 5cyl turbs as stock) but they would have to do a full inspection as "the vehicle is a different capacity to what is listed".

I was hoping to take delivery before this Friday but should I make the dealership sort it out and risk loosing the DV ($600+ worth from the UK). Or take the risk and try and sort it out later/be happy paying lower licencing fee? I might be able to remove it for a day to get tested?

Get dealer to sort it. Will probably pass with the dv on as the pits tend to be rather friendly with dealerships ;)

get dealer to sort it out, they will be helpful before they get your money.

True true...

What if they want to make me pay to keep the part separately?

I guess I've already saved them $50 by finding out the inspection would be free...

Tell them before anything is done you want the car with the mods.

make it a condition of the sale that the cylinder problem be sorted out. and it comes with all mods currently attached. and make sure you get it in writting.

Called my insurance company and they are cool with it being incorrectly listed but said that and mods would need to be approved.

I need full comp insurance for finance approval so how do people usually get around this? Just not declare the mods or make them take it over the pits?

Make the dealer prove they are approved.

Don't 'forget' to put them on the insurance or there will be no point in the insurance (other than a tick in the box for the finance company). Should you bin it the finance company will come after you for the dollars the insurer won't pay up!
