Looks bloody tidy! that engine bay pic is stunning mate. Doing it once and doing it properly it seems! How much power are you expecting to see from this setup?

That engine bay is immaculate. Very impressive setup.

Hate the wheels though :( But can certainly appreciate their significance in relation to the car.

Cheers guys, wheels will change.. wanted FR's but dont think that will happen. Wheels are the last last thing on my mind atm..
To be honest i have no real idea what power it will make, looking at similar setups i think it should make around 550-600rwhp i hope, anything more will be a bonus.

It started at a simple engine swap to an already built 355, but blow out big time so i though fuck it, built it once and built it right.

Hi Mate.

The build looks like it is coming along nicely. ;)
So many options for rims out there mate - forget the Simmons either way and get something unique.

Cool name for the car btw.

When you have it completed I would love to feature it in Perth Street Car and perhaps even Street Commodores.
I will keep checking for progress...

Cheers,
Jordan.

+1!

Leave it looking sleek and sedate on the outside...standard clubby spec until you fry tyres at whatever speed :)

Love everything about it, black, big power motor, tidy interior, no sex spec shit.
Top stuff mate, plenty of pics on its progress please :)

WOW. Cant wait to see this thing finished. It used to blow my mind when it was standard the amount of time you spent keeping everything amazing.

Should be able to beat the old quater time of 14.8 now hey/

Torquen
09-10-2009, 10:35 AM
Id say toping 14.8 shouldnt be to hard :p ... slicks, 3 spd auto, 550+rwhp, 1500kg car!

big o
09-10-2009, 10:49 AM
that looks really nice.

is that a gt 47r

i would like to see a brace from the engine to the exhaust manifold on the lh side, as when that manifold gets hot it's likely to bend under the weight of the turbo.

the manifold is very long.

A simple section of tube from the head to the flange will save you a lot of drama later on.

Scaf
09-10-2009, 10:50 AM
Thanks all.

cplagz- I chose single because i figured i would already have the torque of a 5.8L v8 so i would love the huge boost of one big single, also thought it would be abit different, the trend seams to be twin turbo on commodores. I think it will also make it a little more street friendly, will come on boost later, i could almost drive it around and keep it off boost.

Thanks Jordan, i would love to have it featured! I think its every boys dream to have their car in a magazine. Will keep you updated.

haha stumps, it was a 15.8. It had problems..

big o- Yep i will be making a brace from the head to the flange, was going to get onto that this weekend.

That engine bay is coming along VERY nicely!

Does it matter that the driver side runners are longer and the exhaust gas has a far greater distance to travel than the passenger side?

Scaf
09-10-2009, 03:18 PM
KINGD- haha ok never heard that one before.

na man it doesn't really matter. With the capacity of a V8 it doesn't really need the good flow of a smaller motor. As long as the turbo has constant exhaust pressure it will work well, tuned length and all that means very little on a v8.

yeahlow34
09-10-2009, 03:21 PM

I wouldn't have thought it would have too much of an effect on a single turbo. So long as the inlet piping is the same length, or single piping. Would have an impact on a twin setup though.

10-10-2009, 02:00 PM
love the work done on engine bay, will be a very nice set up once complete.
Rims somewhat arent that bad, as mentioned makes car look alot more of a sleeper.

Whats planned for interior?

Scaf
10-10-2009, 03:47 PM
The bay has had all the factory lumps and bumps on each strut tower beated out and all the holes welded up. Also 3 panels have been put in, as seen in pics, one to lift the original battery location up to match the other side, another put behind the pass side strut tower, and one last one behind the drivers side strut tower next to the brake booster. The radiator support has been completly smoothed and the chassis rails boxed.

It cost me $2200, but Vulcan said they will never do another job like this again for that price, they didnt realise the amount of work involved in a later model commodore and really under quoted. They said its roughly a 3 grand job, so expect to pay around that.

Hmm interior will cop beige/tan leather to the front and rear seats, probably change the rear seat to something different like a vx/y hsv or calais rear. Black carpet and the plastics dyed cream, with black highlights, and a few autometer gauges. Would also like a my roof lining to be cream suede. So will be nothing over the top, just nice and neat. Will also eventually get a cage, would like a 6 point but will probably be a 4 point with removable side intrusion bars.

For those that wanted to see my interior scheme, here is a pic of the rear seat.
its vinyl with suede through the middle. Wasnt going to go vinyl but its about half the price of leather and to tell you the truth i cant tell the difference. The upholsterer said its the best vinyl on the market and most people wont know the differance. I would have liked leather for the wank factor and to keep with the quality the rest of the build it getting but i thought fuck it.. might do leather later on when i have more money to waste on interior.

Shit your right stumps, i've had it for 3 years now almost to the day and these photos are from not long after I got it. So yeh be around 3 years ago, shit time does fly.

I went off the road in April 2008, 1 year and 8 months ago now :(

Scaf

Yeah I got it for a bargain aswell, old wog couple that had had it since new.
It wasn't for sale, but I had noticed it sitting in their garage for years, so I asked and they said they would sell. Probably still be sitting there if I didn't ask.

It's not bad, paint and body pisses me off the most, just few scratches and ripples, and dents in a door where they used to hit it everytime they got out of their other car in the garage. Most people don't notice, but I'm the fussiest person I know, so it angers me.

They've done a few crazy VR/ VS 's that i know of, your in good hands there.

Just out of curiosity, do you have a set of roller rockers lined up? Just saw the pressed steel type, i assume you are just dummying the motor then rebuild?

Just the motor needs to be built, I'm finishing up the wiring then the motor will come out.
While it's getting built the diff will come out just for a gear swap and spool put in.
Also fuel system needs to be setup in the boot and lines run.
That's it. Also a couple of little things, such as manifolds ceramic coated, and the rest of the exhaust done.
I've got a box lined up, just need to work out what stall I'll need.

The interior also needs to be finished but but I'm focusing on getting it running first.

Motor is currently off getting machine work done, so motor is basically the last piece of ther puzzle. Besides wiring..which im dreading.

Huge thanks to Chris at TrimCare, he did an amazing job on the trim.
Ignore console and rear seat not sitting right, they were just placed in at time of photos.

Whoa! Ive never seen anthing like that before! So whats Herrod? An aftermarket place that fits out falcons?

I dont really mind that rear seat. but ive never been a huge fan of massive headrests in the rear, unless they are properly moulded into two buckets and dont sit up to high above the parcel shelf.

As i said mine are out of a vx calais, vt-vx Calais, Berlina and Senators all have similar rear seats with the adjustable headrests. Senator rears are the nicest with alot more bolstering, but they are hard to come by.

Im basically just waiting for my motor, its been down at the Machinist for around 2 months waiting on the mains caps from Harrop, what are supposely out of steel.

While ive been waiting on that ive just been doing little bits and pieces, finishing up the interior, completing the boot and fuel system, mounting the MSD gear. I still have to sort out a gearbox but from what ive been told they can be built and shipped from the US within 2-3 weeks so thats no problem.

Diff is done, rebuilt with a spool and 3.45 gears. Im leaving the axles and the whole IRS setup for the time being and seeing how it copes. Fuel systems is all complete besides injectors and fuel reg. I still need to sort out brakes, im tossing up if to go a big Wilwood setup from the states or a set of HSV brakes... and a nice set of wheels.

It will also be running a 50:50 E85 setup.

Exhaust is the last thing on the list, we are going a single 4" oval 'nascar' exhaust so we can tuck it up and get the car low.

Then to the tuner :)

Heres a picture of the interior basically finished, still needs steering wheel wrapped and a few little bits and pieces put back in.

Aeromotive regs are cheap from the states now, I would look into one of those.

Wilwood > HSV, but don't expect the rotors to last very long if you run an aggressive set of race pads. You will be able to fit nice wheels over wilwoods, no drama. As a guide, I can fit VX SS wheels over my Wilwoods, though my rotors/hats are not Wilwood.

Very excited to hear about the exhaust, I've been playing with the idea of a single oval 4" myself to try and reduce some of the snap crackle and pop in my exhaust.. Not sure how it would work but it would be good to see how you do yours. Should tuck up fairly tight I would imagine.

Who are you looking at to get the box through? I would leave some room for converter teething issues to get it right, seems like a few guys with the blown 8's have been swapping and messing about with converters lately to get the right one.

This is going to peel epicly.

Have to say I'm not a fan of the venetian's. If it were a calais or something that you might of found them on maybe, but not this. Everything else is so clean and tough, I just think it ruins the look. Otherwise, still bombed. Just finish it already!

I was actually going to say the opposite, i am a fan of the venetian's. It's something that sets it apart from all the other commodores on the road.

Thanks heaps guys.

I've had mixed opinions on the venetians, but i like them. They do scream 'sydney leb' but are pretty uncommon in WA and they suit the interior of the car. Plus the side ones cover an ugly gap where the seats dont quite meet the parcel shelf properly - because they are vx seats and parcel shelf in a vs.

Dan - Yep an Aeromotive unit is what im looking at, just going to wait till the motor is in so i can work out excatly what fittings and angles i need before i order it all from the states.

So you can get 17's over your 6 pot Wilwoods? really? If thats the case im sold! Would love to be able to keep the tri's for street duties.

The exahust will be pretty cool, i cant say ive even seen it done before. We are just having a little trouble finding any mufflers with the oval in and out to suit.

The box will more then likely be through ATI racing, they can do a T400, full manual, reverse pattern, transbrake, deep pan, scatter sheild etc. for a touch over 2g including a converter to suit. We will be going a 3000-3200 grand stall and working from that.

Convenient when you have HSV brakes for sale :)

Even if you take it to the track once a year you'll have way more fun on good tyres and good brakes than povo HSV stuff.

never said they were for sale.

i dont want big brakes anymore, swapping them over every 3 weeks for circuit/drag duties is a pain in the ass, so its going back to drag only.

you'll have bulk fun throwing it around a track regardless, how hard you want to push a car that u have just spent bulk coin and many years building is another thing. and will it warrant the 4k extra on a brand of brakes for such rare duties?

Scaf
18-11-2010, 09:52 PM
I think when I am ready to buy brakes I will decide what I'm going to go for.

The wreckers near me basically have the Harrop 4 pots on tap so depending on how much money I have to spend on brakes at the time I might just get a set off them.

I will like to do some track stuff in it, but it's not exactly going to be circuit freindly and im not out to break records so as long as it pulls up ok I'll be happy.

I think the only reason I would go the Wilwoods is the wank factor :D

Do everything right the first time Matty boy ... nothing worse than not having good brakes that can pull you up over a short distance. Thw Q-Banger isnt exactly a track/race car, but putting the Wilwoods on mine is the best thing I ever did :)

Even more so when you will be running 500+ hp and 1800odd kgs. You need big brakes!

This.

A few grand for a great set of brakes is brilliant insurance against muppets/kangaroos/orange cones at RAC centre/sandpits/walls at Barbagallo etc :)

HSV brakes look pretty, but they are tired after a little belting. Wilwoods have function and form, a decent middle/high end unit. There is better, but that would be for pure race orientation. Regardless of which brake setup you go if you are serious about track work you'll utilise a completely different set of pads and rotors for track use anyway.

Complete new wiring loom has been put in, and the MicroTech is in.

Still havent got a box or brakes..

Its still getting progress, and the things to do list is forever getting shorter, so hopefully not much longer.

Yes exactly, Eddy Tassone who is tuning it prefered to use a MicroTech than run Kalmaker software on the standard computer.
Plus I happened to find Shane Stevens old MircoTech out of PSI355, with a turbo holden v8 base tune on it, so it all worked out well.

The plan is to have it done by Powercruise, but we'll see what happens.

Update time.

It’s all slowly coming together…

The motor is now complete, I received my gearbox from the US around a month ago and converter got delivered today.
Hopefully we will be able to put all the driveline in this weekend.

Once it’s all in we can measure up and get the tailshaft built, then it’s back down to Grgich Performance to fab up the exhaust, catch can, rad overflow and surge tank.
They will also wire in the computer and finish up a few other things wiring wise. It will then be ready to fire.

With any luck we will have it down at Powercruise, at this stage we will just be still running it in and will use powercruise to get as many k’s on it before its full tune.

We have run all the figures and are hoping to have around 1100 FLYWHEEL horsepower at 22pound. But im not hanging my hat on that figure, we’ll see what the car does.

I’ve updated the first post with all the motor/gearbox specs for those interested.

Woah! this is great to watch come together.

How do you keep the cast heads on a stock holden block at over 1000 horse? I see your running the ARP studs, are they oversized? ie require redrilling the block/heads..?

Scaf
25-07-2011, 12:28 PM
Went cast heads purly because we didnt think the alloy would be able to handle big boost without lifting and warping, the head studs are the standard size but a much higher tensile then standard. 1/2 inch head studs are to big once the heads start getting big porting.

Magic1 - you're in luck, they are.

Turbo2.6L
25-07-2011, 12:33 PM
I know the larger diameter studs are too big once you have extensive porting on the heads, but will the standard diameter springs handle 20psi+ without allowing the heads to lift? Might be an idea to go the larger studs with slightly less porting if you haven't already had the heads touched, losing a few hp but gaining reliability??

Scaf

It's not only the heads, the half inch head studs have been known to crack the bores. The motor is built to be reliable, we didn't go out chasing big power.

It will only run at around 15pound, we will pump it up to 20-22 for dyno comps and that.
