View Full Version : MicroTech. Do i need it?
Hey all i got offered a MicroTech LT-8 and Hand Controller for my clubby for a good price today.
Its a VS Clubsport with a holden 355, and a gt42r.
I havent looked much into computer and tuning side of things yet, and dont really know much about it.
My question is do i need it?
Can the exact same thing be achieved by a memcal on my standard computer?
What are the advantages/disadvantages of running an aftermarket computer?
Thanks for the help.
Matt.

you build a dunnydore 355 with a gt42 and havent thought of management?? jesus. Best be talking to somebody who knows the memcal software, if it was easy it would be more common then it is now. the later commodores ls1 powered ++ tuners can program them to run forced induction with factory standard computer, which i find amazing.
Global motors and ecus pay off in the end for the tuners it seems. anyways talk to your preferred tuner is the advice
Mangment has nothing to do with the mechanics of the car, engine combo and turbo setup etc, which im still in the process of so no i havent looked to far into it.
I have spoke to dan at chipmasters before they left WA and he said they have never used an aftermarket
computer on any commodore they have worked on, unless the customer insisted.
But since i got offered this at such a good price i thought i might look into what are the pros and cons, if any over just using the standard comuter.
Guess ill seak some professional advice.

Microtech isn't a bad ecu for the "cheaper" side of things. It does pretty much everything a "average" person would need.
For a big build thats going to be delivering big numbers (which the 42R will :D), ecu choice would be high on the list. Unfortuantely the Lt-8 wouldnt be very high on that list..
Find a tuner that you trust and use an ecu that they are best suited to. I dont know much about the commodore ecu, but if the workshop has done good work with it and punched out nice reliable numbers then go that path. Otherwise go the Haltech, Vipec or Motec ($$) path if you want something with lot more features (launch control, variable boost control against each gear etc).

Sell the microtech and use stock computer.
It can be configured for just about any setup and works just as well as an aftermarket ecu if not better, speak to someone like Chipmaster and they should set you straight.
Also if you bought the microtech second hand you will need to send it back to microtech to get it configured for your setup which costs about $350
Its Shane Stevens MicroTech off PSI 355 and it already has a base tune for a 5L Commodore, so thats not a problem.
Chipmasters used to be the go to guys for commodore tuning but they have moved interstate.
I dont really know who else to go to?
Im going to go have a chat to Active today and see what they think.

Pick your tuner, before your ecu

LebTechs have no issue makeing power....
A V8 with a Snail isnt really a difficult setup. It doesnt need to data log or to run two step or any of the other things, A simple computer will yield simple userfriendly use.
PLenty of people in Perth are happy to tinker with Lebtechs, doubt youll have an issue if you find someone happy to tune it :)
