View Full Version : My new rig- E46 M3

BAS

Couple shit pics from inside the garage as it decided to start raining on me! More to come.

2005 E46 M3 in Phoenix Yellow, SMG, 19's, etc. From what i can tell it seems to have had nearly every option ticked which is lucky for me. Would never have been my first choice in colour but its grown on me and actually looks pretty good in the sun.

Totally stock for now, short term plans are for Eibach springs, high flow cat and an exhaust once i decide which one- probably the supersprint:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jRxtmi61aI
Not like the stock exhaust sounds shit though, particularly above 7,000prm.

There isn't a whole lot you can do to these cars, and unfortunately compared to the Jap cars its big $$ for tiny gains. Possibly different wheels and will look at what can be done on the intake.

Should be out at the odd No Limits night and most AHG sprint events so i can stretch its legs.

Will keep the thread updated as the mods roll in.

And the Evo, which is for sale and should be gone by the weekend :(
Has mostly been de-modded now, but pushed out 330HP on ASG dyno and got around barbagallo in 55.7.
Had to take a pic while they were both in the garage :)

Will be out on the odd cruise now i'm not driving the evo which was a yellow sticker waiting to happen, at least the M3 can do a skid too...

Update 10/08/2010- have done a few mods since i got it:
KW V3 coilovers
Supersprint race exhaust and mid pipes- car sounds a million times better now
Matt Schnell intake
CSL brakes, and CSL front splitters
Matte white wrap with matte black on roof
Blacked out front grilles and side gills
Avant Garde wheels, 19*8.5, 19*9.5. More aggressive offsets than standard 19's and bit more concavity in the rear. Similar design to BBS CH but lighter.
Couple of small audio upgrades thanks to Rob at Volatile...

I know the guy who owns that one, its on coilovers and yeah dropped a bit too low IMO. He used to own an Estoril blue E36 with M III plates. We both live Mt Lawley area so there will be two kicking around the area now i guess- we even look reasonably similar (same hair cut anyway...). He'll be pissed when he discovers i got exactly the same car as him :)
My one was owned from new by an older doctor who lived in Dalkeith, he traded it on an ML Merc.

As for the SMG- well its going to take some getting used to...was keen to give it a go though, as the guy who owns my cars twin has been talking it up since he got his. Keen to give the launch control a try.

Thank god there is another not on the jap trail anymore.

Great cars, I missed mine enough to get another one.

Join m3forum.net and e46fanatics, you'll learn alot quickly as to how to make them work better than factory. Plus, there are threads on there for exhausts - youtube so you can find what you really like rather than forking out $8k for an exhaust system that sounds like poo. STAY AWAY FROM GRUPPE M TI. Franz will tell you, my previous E46 M3 sounded like a JGTC NSX.

SMG isnt hard, fuck off auto mode (D) its just uber gay.

paddles or sequential play is FTW!

Pm me if you want any parts etc, I have the exact same as you in jet black with exhaust etc.

Changing the exhaust i.e section 1 and 2 wont gain you f' all, being euro they are almost identical to the CSL stuff. USA cars are crap (they got the junk exhaust systems due to their regs) and hence why they buy all the exhaust systems. P.S there are far too many to choose from...

Best of luck with it, enjoy, you'll love it around corners under acceleration. Awesome cars and the cops dont do bugger all. Luxury, speed, handling whilst listening to Mozart = M3!

Nice buy mate. If you want PM me the last 7 digits of your VIN and I'll get it run to show all the options .etc the car has.

The SMG2 gearbox is great. You can buy uprated clutches for it so you can still run more power. I'm sure if it was shit, they wouldn't have continued to use it in the CSL.

If you want to drop it, I wouldn't go past a set of Bilstein PSS9 or KW Variant 2 or 3 depending on budget of course.

4.10 diff gearing is a reasonably good value for money mod. Car creates torque earlier in the rev range. Not the best thing if doing freeway driving all the time, you use more fuel inevitably and auto mode cant find shifting points anymore, so no auto mode... Good 3 - 4 car lengths on factory cars.... $4k delivered pre built whole diff from Turner Motorsport.

That's because you supply the diff and are without one whilst it's being built. Turner are complete bolt in, and I assume come with the finned diff cover too?

I belted mine this arvo down main hwy after leaving Wilkos.

GOoooood shit....

Motor sounds porn when revving hard, and the shifts in S6 are bullshit quick.

Turner 4.10 = finned refurbed rear diff with 4.10 polished gearing, all ready to go straight in and play.

Turner have some bullshit good parts as they have race series cars with cages and custom motors etc.

Best E46 M3 of all time is LOADED which is the one with the above straight pipes and ESS Supercharger kit. 7:22 around nurburgring and they are re doing a motor for more power, around 700hp at treads......

E46 M3 motors come with forged crank and rods factory. Good for 600hp - 680hp at treads factory with turbo kit... HPF do them in the US. Currently doing a RHD SMG model, they just did one for 6MT few months ago. Damn SMG.

the manual mode is better, the auto mode is absolute rubbish. absolutely destroys the feel of the car not to mention it wont change when you want it to.

if it was manual it would be perfect. That gearbox doesnt do it justice imho.

Slightly off topic, but 15K excess is bloody cheap for the M3 CSL, when the 325i I drove on the ring was 8K. Then was told Porka GT3 had a 50K euro excess... ouch!

Stock wheels aren't worth much unfortunately unless you can find the right buyer. Tirerack.com might have prices on BBS CH-R's.

And no offence LEXPLAY, but if you are buying parts (OEM) for the car, get a quote local for sure, and then send Patrick @ BMAParts an email with part numbers (you can get these from RealOEM.com) to see how much you can save.... some things are ridiculous savings, others not so much. ie, AutoClassic wanted $60 for a part, ASV and Imparts wanted $45.... cost me $6 from BMAParts and $10 shipping.

Changing BMW exhausts is hard. I had one system put onto my old 740iL that sounded like arse and lost mid range, had the mufflers changed and a X-pipe fitted, the sound was beautiful and the midrange increase made the car a totally different thing to drive.

Any straight through exhaust on a N/A car is going to sound like arse, turbo cars you can get away with it because the turbine acts as a muffler of sorts already.

car looks good! do you mind me asking what the choice was behind the wrap? this may be a common practice but i've never really seen anyone ask for a vehicle wrap without any advertising

Looks awsome. A favourite car of mine.
Whats with the SMG hate? SMG 2 kicks ass. Just need to crank the shift speed/harshness button up and its great fun. Road testing these cars is all I miss about being a mechanic!

It's an easy way to change the colour of your car, and be able to go back again whenever you want.

Matte white is actually a smart choice because it doesn't show up the scuffing that matte black suffers quite badly from.

Which brand did you use Brett? 3M, Arlon or Avery?

Looks awesome, BTW.

Whoah that wrap looks amazing.
I'd be very keen to see how the matte white holds up over time - please keep us informed.

Its back to original colour, left the matte black on the roof though. The love it/ hate it colour actually looks great with all the black highlights IMO.

ps- drove the IS-F, its ok, could see it getting boring. Yes it goes but its pretty quiet i thought. They never got back to me after first drive so i haven't chased it up.

Yeh I agree. Never been a fan of this colour but with black (carbon fiber) accents do find it quite agreeable.
