pretty easy process

fill out WA transfer forms, send with car or post to the buyer.. no different to selling a car in WA

also have the option of de-registering the car prior to sale

it's completely different actually.

WA transfer papers only work when transferring the rego to another WA license holder.

you need to write a receipt saying you sold the vehicle to the other person, for $xx on xx date.

i had 3 receipts when i swapped my legnum for a HR31 from ACT.
1 saying i sold the car for xx amount, a second one saying the 31 had been sold to me for xx amount, and a third one stating the vehicles were swapped with xx cash exchanged. that way there is proof of the swap, and a total car price/value that the DPI can base their stamp duty on.

Sorry a little of topic, if you where to do a straight swap on a car (ie no cash exchanged) do you still pay stamp duty??

yep, thats why we did the other 2 receipts saying i sold the leggy for $xx, and he sold the 31 for $xx, easier than saying they were swapped.

I sold my seca to a guy in SA, sent WA transfer papers to the purchaser. No issues..

purchased an R32 last year out of sydney, receved NSW transfer form and pits check sheet from NSW before the car hit the freight truck.. car arrived.. took over pits in which it passed, then went into the DPI next door with the pit sheet and nsw transfer forms and walked out with WA plates

never needed proof of purchase for both accounts

yeah, just sold a car to a bloke in QLD.
He flew over with $20k in cash for the deposit and a look, flew back did the eft for the other $59k.
I dropped it off at Ceva, handed the plates in & sent him a bill of sale. - job done easy as & a nice little $29k profit for me

Have sold to east once. Lodged xfer papers with wa dpi and stat-dec saying I no longer own the car.
About two years later a receive a speeding fine from that registration and my name in a state I don't live in.

Argued and won. Seems they don't understand English over there sometimes.

When I delivered my Calais to the depot I took the plates off there and returned them to the DPI. I was actually a little slow, about a fortnight, and he had already passed the pits and registered in QLD.
I received a letter from the WA DPI telling me to bring the plates in as the VIN was now registered in another state.

Have a guy from VIC coming over to look at a 6 wheeler tipper this week. He's wanting to buy it and drive it back. Do we still hand the plates in and he drives on a movement permit or? Not really sure how it's supposed to work....

100% de-register it and hand the plates back in. DoT will not transfer rego to interstate buyer, and you will get fined for not returning the plates.

Has this changed recently?

What you used to do was go over the pits was to hand in the plates to the DOT and register the vehicle with WA plates.
You then go onto the states transport website with a proof of receipt to get a partial refund on the rego.

Its not so much of a change, but doing that assumes the new buyer will transfer rego, and hand the plates back in, before a fine comes in the mail for not returning plates.

I spoke to DoT last week, they will not transfer registration to an interstate buyer. I now have a fine for not returning plates, despite a stat dec stating I am not in possession of the vehicle.

If the new owner doesnt hand the plates in within the 3 months, the DoT in their infinite fuckery will likely send a fine in the mail. Better to do it yourself, and ensure there are zero issues in the future.

It takes 5 mins to buy an online permit for the new owner.

Good info thanks mate. I rang DoT today and they were utterly useless. Hand the plates in myself seems the best way to cover my ass.

Make sure the buyer knows this is happening as he may have issues getting movement permits as he crosses the state boarder

Iirc somebody on here had issues when driving a unregistered but permitted car back from the east coast
