Gumpert Apollo Speed sets new Ring record (7:11) - Confirmed!
17.08.2009
Update: SportAuto has confirmed the laptime of 7:11.57 as the new record for Nordschleife. It is safe to say now that we have a new king-of-the-ring!
Is it just another rumor or speculation (just like the 7:40 Bugatti Veyron time), or is it a fact?
Several sites (none of which are very well known or trusted) have published an article claiming that the new Gumpert Apollo Speed, with a guy named Florian Gruber behind the wheel, has broken (or shall I say - completely destroyed) current Nurburgring Nordschleife record for road legal vehicles (ignoring the barely legal Radical SR8). The current record holder is Dodgle Viper SRT-10 ACR with a laptime of 7 minutes and 22 seconds. The supposed new record by Gumpert is 7 minutes and 11 seconds - more than 10 second improvement!
I have no idea whether or not this is true and legit and unless it's official and confirmed, the 7:11 laptime will be prefixed with a big question mark on our Nordschleife laptime sheet. Fastest car status on the ring is a very sensitive issue and we do not include rumors in our laptime sheets.
Either way I will keep you posted on how this develops. I really do hope this laptime get's confirmed because I believe that car is capable of such speeds. Viper ACR is great but it clearly isn't the fastest road-going race car you can buy.

The Apollo is the first creation of former Audi motorsports boss and Audi chief engineer Roland Gumpert. The car features a lot of Audi parts and it is powered by a twin turbo Audi 4.2L V8 (used as well in cars like the R8, RS4 etc.). Its carbon fibre body sits atop a chrome molybdenum alloy and steel frame with a better power to weight ratio than a Mc Laren F1. There are 3 engine types available, a base version with about 641.11 bhp (478 kW; 650 PS), a sport version with around 690.42 bhp (515 kW; 700 PS), and a race version with around 789.06 bhp (588 kW; 800 PS), all street legal. Top speed is 360 km/h (220 mph) with 0-100 km/h (62 mph) reached in 2.7 seconds and 0-200 km/h (120 mph) in 7.9 seconds. The car creates so much downforce that the manufacturers claim that the car in theory could drive upside-down in a tunnel if driven at sufficiently high speeds (over 190mph, though this remains to be tested. )
the one that clocked the 7:11 was the 690BHP (Speed) version and it isn`t even the most powerful in their line-up
here is a link and the lap video, the driver is Florian Gruber (an Audi R8 LMS pilot), enjoy:
