heya all!
since cleaning out some casinos in previous time, its finally time to step into the foray of slr and call myself a professional photographer (some people get the joke perhaps)
the tossup in the under 2k range for a good body and a basic lense so far looks to be the canon 50d or the d90 nikon.
I like the nikon range have used and interface feels good. Obviously i just want a good base and then forkout good money for the lenses as the income comes in.
Also understand that the canon 50d is made in japan, and the nikon d90 is thailand made but from reviews thats not a hinderance. If im gonna pay 2k~ ish for something it better be good quality.
Other brands id like to hear honest opinions! Yes im no professional just an enthusiast but will pay the money for the top of the line if its justified.
thoughts?

Good combo, well priced.

I have a 50D and its served me well since I got it last year, no complaints with it really. Depending on what you plan to do a cheaper body might be good enough though.
Never used a kit lens with it so can't comment on those.

I got the canon 50D and the missus younger brother has the D90.
I would choose the 50D over the Nikon, but at the end of the day, its the glass that matter's.
Hold both and feel what's comfortable, thats the one you should choose.

Nikon and Canon are prety much as good as each other now cant go wrong, since your familiar with Nikons seems like the easy choice maybe play with the Canon and see if you like it, people are gonna reccomend what they use so it wont help much haha.

cool cheers for the feedback.
will jus up the cash and do a little more research, im not talking pro photographer spec, just something that will give me the ability to do some clean in focus pics without photoshopping the efforts.
Plus im a big advocate of getting value for money the 50d is looking good. and its made in japan.

The 50D handles higher ISO aswell. Depending on what lense your using this could be a big + over th d90. I have a 1000D i would part with mate.
EDIT: forgot to mention there's a new (rumor) 60D coming out aswell. the specs top the d90 by far.

dude i dont understand the relationship between lens and high ISO ability, care to explain?
both canon and nikon do high ISO well.
japan vs thailand dont mean shit.
(controversy post) in general, it is aknowledged that nikon make the better lenses
Also to the OP, dont get caught up in the 'gotta have the latest body to take good photos' b.s. Any (working photographer /pro/) will tell you the gear you mention is up to scratch for your intended purpose and then some (and will be for a long time yet) and it would come down to your ability to use it. Lens make a difference but not as big as some would claim. other than that read more technical reviews of the gear (not opinions)

thats historically speaking
links will probably take you to someones opinion. to get the full picture you would have to study the history of the two brands, like I did.
the difference today is virtually nil, and you wont go wrong with either brand.

shoot me a pm when you narrow it down, and i'll get you a price from work. Personally, I've always used Sony SLRs against the mass opinion of Canon and Nikon holding the supreme reign. I like the new ones, especially since Minolta basically designed them, and I can use almost any of my old Conica lens' with them. I also heard about an adapter plate allowing even more lens choice. P.S I had a A350 which I just sold. Thought it was really good... Looking at a A900 now.

This issue comes up a lot between Nikon vs Canon and unless you are a pro you probably wont have any tangible reasons for taking one over the other. I would recommend sticking with one of the two as they offer the largest selection of manufacturer and third party lenses as well as flashes and other accessories.
I would base your decision on what body is comfortable (location of controls). I would actually suggest reducing your budget for a body even more so and instead spending the difference on a good f2.8 zoom. Dont disregard some of the 3rd party lenses too, it takes a bit of hunting but there are some awesome bargains that offer 90% of the performance of a Canon/Nikon lens at a fraction of the price. I'd also recommend cheaper primes, 50mm f1.8 and 35mm f1.8 lenses are stupidly cheap but are damn good.
Wont really enter the debate but as for the high ISO remark the 50D is actually worse than the 40D which it replaced and the D90 is probably in the middle of the two, its really much of a muchness comparing these bodies.
As for where glass is made it doesnt really matter anymore, it has been proven that theres no difference between Chinese and Japanese versions of lenses. Given where a lot of the products are made its a pretty redundant argument as the quality control process is still the same regardless of where they are constructed.

I dont think you read my post properly?
Using a better quality lense will mean you dont have to up the ISO, Using a lower quality lense in poor light means you will have too, blaa blaa. Hence saying depending on what lense you use the canon maybe a better choice.
I do agree with what your saying though, at the standard of camera they are, they are pretty much the same. As for lenses, i know nikkor have been the world leader in scientific lenses infront of carl zeiss. I guess at our level it wouldn't be noticable.
