fake grass is shit, looks shit, wears out easy and smells like cat piss after a while, seen heaps of people with it while doing removal work.

BUT apparently (according to family) there is some stuff out that looks, feels and acts like real grass (besides the growing!) and even has some sort of synthetic dirt underlay as well as drainage properties.

Can anyone confirm/deny this as I'm also interested :)

the grass aint for dogs or kids to be running on, its under cover and enclosed by cafe blinds.

just be nice to chill out there thongs off, beer in hand and feet on soft grass (even if its fake) rather then cold ass bricks.

forgot to mention it will be laid over existing brick work, would i need a rubebr underlay or something to stop mechanical wear on the underside of the fake grass?

We've got it outside the front of our house and it looks and feels great.

Unless you tell people most dont even realise.

Also have friends using it for ages with no problems.

must be the good stuff i was talking about?

as the stuff you buy off the roll (from bunnings etc) is FTL as it cant drain liquids (not porous which makes cleaning a bitch) and wares out pretty fast

My folks laid this out in their back yard cause they didn't want to worry about mowing etc.

Not too bad. Its the stuff that actually looks like real grass and has underlay, dirt etc.

Of course it doesn't look as good as real grass, but that requires effort to maintain. Only thing I could really fault was that it gets hot in the sun, so it kinda sucks for sitting on in summer.....

Hell keen on slapping this out the front of my next house - permanent nice looking frontage. Good idea to leave the real shit out the back for the dog though I guess

I install the shit for a living. Bunnings stuff is crap, its the worst china spec grass you can find. We use Australian made turf that looks and feels like real grass. Prices range up to $60 a square metre plus installation. There are tons of different types of grass, lengths of pile (blades of grass), stitch rate etc etc. All of it drains great, and it all comes down to personal choice, if you want a putting green/cricket pitch or some real looking turf.

As for laying it we usually use a compacted metal dust (fine blue metal) base, about 50mm thick. Then the grass is layed, then white silica sand is brushed into the grass to hold it in place and make the pile stand upright. then there is the option of a layer of crushed rubber to make it look like there is soil instead of bright white sand. We have layed it on paving before, but its best to grout inbetween all the bricks so its a nice flush surface as the grass would eventually drop into the cracks a little and would look like shit.

Laying it is piece of piss, just need to take some care on the joins (if any).

We have a few samples setup at the Quick Grow Garden Centre in Neerabup (on Wanneroo Rd just after Hester ave). Shoot me a Pm if your after any more info

Heard astroturf is crap if you fall over or slide on it though, leaves good burns .

Mate moved into a joint with fake grass, looks the goods and feels good to walk on. Definately something to look into when i decide i might want some lawn.

I think your talking about the stuff they play sport on, hockey, cricket etc.

That stuff takes layers of skin off.

Parents have fake stuff out the back.
Sand underlay, then the fake stuff, then swept sand through it to make it stand up...
Never had a problem with drainage, it getting to hot in summer, or it wearing out.

Spill something on it (beer, chips, etc) just either sweep or vacuum it up :)
