View Full Version : V8 News/rumour - 888 switching to Holden
2010 season will see the best Ford team of the last few years switching to Holden cars.
Expect an anouncement shortly.
Listed as a rumour, because until someone officially says its so, I'd hope its not true.
A big fuck you to Ford if it happens.
Excellent :)
I know a few die hard blue oval boys will be crying over this

Ford withdrew there sponsorship backing from 888 and a few other ford teams at the end of last season, and are only backing FPR and SBR now.
I would say that has a lot to do with it .
If you look closly at the 888 cars next round there is not even a Ford badge on them anymore.
Ie: windscreen and badge on grill.

I've got a mate seriously willing to bet $200 with me that this wont happen.
I'll take him up on it and donate half to antilag

Thats always a possibility if Toyota want to pull their finger out, seeing as Toyota already produce a pushrod V8 for the American NASCAR series... the basics are already in place.

I think it would be good if Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi got involved with the V8 Supercars. The 2 brand camp has become as boring as fuck, with Ford winning for 2-4 years, then Holden doing the same etc, etc. Bring back the multiple manufacturers racing FTW.

888 have not carried any Ford branding this year. Despite this they are almost certainly the best funded team in the pitlane. Vodafone tip in huge $$$'s.
Also Holden contribute either very little or no funding to most of the teams running Commodores.
If I remember correctly Lowndes is the only remaining driver paid by a manufacturer.
All up, given Roland Dane has had 12 months to get over his dummy spit & has a good business supplying chassis to DJR, PCR & others (hand me downs to the Konica series) I wouldn't be putting my house on it. He is probably just doing it to get something out of Ford other than the raw chassis/parts they get anyway.
Cant remember the last time i actualy sat down and watched the supercars, Im sure if they didn't can the old days it would b a much larger event than it is now.. seeing cars such as 34's, jza80's & e36's would of been a beautiful thing.
Yet GTP racing was a massive failure in Aus.

V8's are boring as fuck anyway. Throw in the 34's & M3's as previously stated, along with a few Barra 6 Turbo's to mix it up i say!
AGIT8D
28-07-2009, 01:48 PM
I dont find them boring but certainly could be made more exciting with different cars lumped in
Barra's would make it a hell of alot more entertaining imo
Its not the cars that are the issue.
They all have to run 5l pushrod v8's - so make close to the same power.
they all run
same front suspension
same rear suspension
same wheelbase which is nothing like the road cars
same brakes
same gearbox
same diff
See why they are getting processional boring races ?

So the cars are the issue then...
Put a bit of variety in there to mix it up & open the floodgates in regards to modifications!

Yup, dirty thong slapper 5L haha, which I only realised when Holden went up to the 5.7L gen3 and the supercars kept using a 5L...
You are spot on though TJ about them setting all the cars up the same, it's very guidelined. I can't see any other cars entering this, and if people wanted to see thong slappers vs barra's another championship would need to kickstart.
99% sure its in the rules Bart.
Lonewolf
28-07-2009, 02:42 PM
yeah its not the manufacturer that matters, its the cars guidelines that are the problem.
These are set out in the whole running of the sport, and would take a huge effort to rewrite all the rules to make any change in this regard.
I can see why they do it, to make things more even and fair, but it makes it boring.
M3's used to be outclassed by the RWD/AWD cars, but when it rain they came into their own.
99% sure its in the rules Bart.
funny that most people on here think it is boring, yet the series has grown significantly over the last couple of years.
TJ, 99% sure means your not sure....

I would say open the floodgates and let them run whatever they want to, but they have a monetary cap on the car and whats in it. Teams Imagination at its best
Sully
28-07-2009, 10:41 PM
at the moment they're heading down the nascar route where all the cars are identical and then the teams are only allowed to tweak a few certain things. and we clearly all love nascar here.....
i personally think they should go the way F1 is heading, budget cap and then open it up to a little more innovation. last time touring cars were an open category world wide we got all kinds of awesome cars, gtr, gtho's, sierra cosworths, e30 m3's, blah blah blah. that time gets called the golden era for a reason, it was interesting to more than just 2 groups of fans.
sure you might get 1 team absolutely dominating a season but for fuck sake, look back at the motorsport people that are the most respected, schumacher, rossi, brock, johnson, skaife, they all dominated the shit out of the sport for a while. it's gooooooood for it!!

$$$ break contracts?
Darklove
29-07-2009, 06:50 AM
Break contracts? You don't think he'd stay with 888 TJ??
Well, he is the only driver whos salary is paid for by Ford.
He is actually contracted by them to drive one, regardless of team for the next 1/2 years.
So if 888 go Holden, he will need to buy out his own contract from Ford.
That will take $$, especially as ford wont be happy about it all.

FPR/SBR to fly the ford flag... yehhhh right.
FPR... never had it, Frosty goes ok, but Richards... too old.
SBR ... should of been called Marcos Ambrose Racing, it was all him, since his departure, the team has been nothing. and he wont be returning anytime soon to aus.

Lowndes is now the 2nd smiley face kunt i want to punch.
SBR was the shit back in the day ... Ambrose up front ... Ingall behind smashing any car that tried to pass ... now ... it looks like its gonna be another few years of Holden dominating and every VB drinking shaved head toothless spastic will remind us Ford Fans about it at every turn. At least when Ford was winning we did it with some class ... im affraid its back to HSV symbols on every piece of fucking merchandise that can be worn on the human body ... the only thing that wouldnt sell is a HSV condom purely because they wont be able to afford a carton of VB without getting there baby bonus everytime shazza has another of bazza's babies that was surely conceived on Mount Panorama behind the dunny.
Fuck you Ford .... ever since Tocchi brought one they have gone downhill
thanks MATT !

Hi everyone
It's been an exciting week for TeamVodafone. We dominated the sports news headlines last week with the announcement that Vodafone will continue as Principal sponsor of the Team until 2012. We made the call to sign-up with TeamVodafone for a further three years last week and now Holden have come to the party, revealing that it will provide the muscle behind Australia's number one V8 Supercar team, with TeamVodafone set to race Holden Commodores from 2010 onwards.
We're extremely proud of TeamVodafone's achievements over the years. Under the TeamVodafone banner, the team has won a total of 39 races, the 2008 driver and team championship titles and two prestigious Bathurst 1000 crowns. Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes have shared Barry Sheene Medal honours every year since Vodafone entered the sport, with a panel of Motorsport greats and media nominating the team-mates as Best and Fairest for the past three seasons.
Vodafone has happily welcomed the news of this new partnership between TeamVodafone and Holden. We look forward to watching Jamie and Craig steer their way to even more success behind the wheel of a Holden from next year.
Here’s a sneak peak at what the 2010 TeamVodafone Commodore will look like!

Quote from 888 racing.....
"Lowndes, who left the Holden stable to drive for Ford-backed 00 Motorsport in 2001 and still has a personal contract with Ford until the end of this year, did not attend today’s announcement."
Go with the dosh I guess.

So did anyone watch the V8's over the weekend? HRT did alright over the weekend, I enjoyed seeing bits of it from both days... Commentators make for good viewing by discussing all the different strategies to best position yourself to win the race etc.
