Hi Guys,

Looking at getting a set of rims either powdercoated or painted black, what do you think would be better? and last longest.

Also what would the average price be to paint rims? i've been told that powdercoating can be from 50->100 bucks.

And finally who do you guys recomend north of the river to do this!
all help will be greatly appreciated.

Jamie.

id say powder coating. a dude on perth s15 had some P1's done at a powdercoater in canningvale for around 30 dollars a rim he said. the results speak for themselves

i allways thought powdercoating was a much more durable finish, so thats what i would prefer - especially for rims

^^ Yup powdercoating will last longer but it'll also be more expensive.

do they sand blast them or whatever and prep them up for you? although the coating would be tougher, would it chip off in large cuncks if hit with debris rather then just scratchign if painted?

mine were prepped before, as i had them repaired

and do you mean rocks and crap off the road, or kerbs?
mine never had a single chip on them after ~6 months on the car, they were sold after that

powdercoating is much thicker i think, I've used south side powdercoaters before, i think they right next to X Speed in the oconnor area. Haven't used them for car parts but for other stuff I was very happy with the work.

Spray paint. Ironlak
Can always recoat them really, I did mine about a month ago, still look good. No scratches or chips.
$7 for a can and self satisfaction or $160 for someone else to do it.
$153 spend better else where I say

tell me how long they last.

i spray painted the rims on my legnum, because i wanted to see what matt black looked like as i had gloss black rims before, and intended on getting them done properly once i chose matt/gloss.

paint lasted about a month before lots and lots of tiny little chips started appearing, and the exact same thing happened when we sprayed rhys' rims too.

i painted my rims on supra with 20 dollar can of paint (and like bart - even used primer)

only had them on car for about 3 months before selling the car on - looked pretty good for the time i owned it....

dont think id be spray painting some quality jap rims though with a can though. quality paint with a spray gun on the other hand....

DO NOT POWDER COAT FORGED RIMS.

They can fail due to the heat treatment for powder coating, it softens the alloy!!!!!

I may be wrong, but i was told that powdercoating weakens the rims.
Reason being they have to heat the rim???

Here is a question.

I have some factory rims that are looking a little dull. I suspect that over time the clear coat has been stripped away from a potent wheel cleaner or the likes.

What is the likely hood of giving them a good clean and re-applying some clear?

Despite how cheap powder coating is - I don't really want to spend much when they are stock rims - not to mention cost removing/refitting tyres.

kurbn
27-07-2009, 10:02 PM
it will make them look shiny again, you tried polishing them? if your putting clear back on just make sure the surface looks smooth otherwise it will look all bumpy and crap. ie... dont paint over the top of clear that is pealing off

A mate that works as a powdercoater said he has done heaps of rims and has had one fail yet. He said yeah the rim gets hot enough that you cant touch it but not that hot that it would bugger it structurally.

Im going to get my 17" BBS baskets done and see how it goes

Heresay.

Heating the rims up can actually de-stress the whole casting, making it more likely to not fail in a incident. And to PC your not heating to the point a forging is turned back into a liquid state.

However, wheels are a big heatsink for braking systems, and there is a reason people who work pits use gloves, as they get very hot. My Simmons for eg were powdercoated from factory. I have just restored them with new bolts, and stems, the centres i had glass bead blasted, and re-powder coated by R&L in Osb park, and the job was honestly flawless. Finding a powedercoated that does perfection isnt easy ... been to many in the past.

Very stupid question, my rims have tyres and i want them powdercoated and i dont want new tyres.

Will the powdercoating place be able re-fit tyres after the job?

mitchy
21-08-2009, 08:33 PM
take them to a tyre place, get tyres removed, take them home
get the rims powder coated
get tyre place to refit your old tyres

Butcher
21-08-2009, 11:30 PM
Be careful though theres a few tyre shops out there that will go no problems then when you go back to to get the tyres refitted they will refuse and say they wont do it incase the tyres fail, then try and flog you some new ones.

a sand blaster will sand blast them, and a powder coater will powder coat them.

prices vary, cost me about $400 to have my old rims (along with 2 sets of centre caps) done about 2-3 years ago, and they were 100% perfect.

recently had another set of rims done, came in at $240 and they are pretty good, found 1 or 2 little imperfections, but nothing noticeable.

Digging up this thread, theres no clear decision on which is better powercoating or painting... only that some people have had bad experiences with average jobs.

Soo... who have people used SOR to do painting or powdercoating that do a good job and what kind of prices have people had? Also, turn around times?
Prefer a one-stop-shop.

No one ended up saying if Tech9 can do it... So I will call today.

j3rk, Tech9 can powdercoat. as i got my gtr rims done in black through them...
$66/rim (including strip tyre and refit)... it was going to be $44/rim but the gtr rims supposedly have lots of paint layers from factory or something, and required more sandblasting

With powdercoating can you achieve a real glossy finish?
I was assuming I was going to have to paint to achieve the look I want (Full black gloss / matched to the car paint basically).

I.e. Have to remove tyres / sandblast rims or just drop off to you... pick them up x days / weeks later? (whats the turn-around time also)

Just to have tyres removed.

As far as sandblasting, thats a personal choice.

I have never had my own rims sandblasted, just use a decent etch and have never had flaking or chipping. Our old utes had the tyres ripped off and rotated at least every three weeks, and beefcake on here never marked them.

What is the process of painting out a polished lip?
Just etch primer then top colour?

I've got a set of BBS LM (two piece) and they're looking a bit chintzy for my liking with the gold/polished barrel.

Currently look like this:
http://www.tirerack.com/images/wheels/bbs/swap/bbs_lm_gldml_ci3_l.jpg

Would like them to look like this:
http://www.bbs-japan.co.jp/b_img/pro/lm_dbk200.jpg

The centre/basket can be mounted to the front or the rear of the barrel giving you a few extra mm of offset...
Any recommendations as to who should I talk to about having the contact surfaces machined flat once painted?
I'm guessing a machine/engineering shop, but any recommendations would be appreciated.

Just to add to this Tokyo Motorsports are doing powder coating with loaner wheels available.

As posted on evolutionoz.net

http://www.evolutionoz.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=56361

Powdercoating is the best way to give your wheels a new look. It is an extremely tough finish that is available in almost any colour (including metalics).
After removing the wheels from your car we first have the tyres and valves removed. After that we have the rims blasted clean, undercoated and powdercoated in the colour of your choice.
Once powder coated we have the original tyres refitted and balanced (or new ones fitted if necessary).

The turnaround time is approximately five days (depending on work load).

Loan wheels..!!
To make things easier for you we have a set of wheels and tyres that we can loan you so your car is not off the road while your wheels are away.

Total cost (includes refitting & balancing original tyres): $550.

Total cost (when fitting new tyres): $450 + new tyres.

Call us or email for more information: 9358 2729 or info@tokyomotorsports.com.au

For something different I had some new vehicle wrap to evaluate so was thinking of a way to see how good it is. Mate said to do his rims so I gave it a go on his full chrome 20" ones, picture isn't of them finished but you get the idea, will load an image when finished on car.

With the colours, textures and quality of material these days available (ex Europe) you can wrap anything, if it will stick to a 360 hp Jet Ski it will handle a set of rims. Unlike painting if you get sick of them in 6 months peel it off.

It isn't for everybody and yes limited rims can be done but again something different.

The service and work done was top notch and would happily use them again, for $220 they made a ratty set of wheels look brand new.

edit. I like them more after seeing them in the sun. The caps don't fit because of a lip from the coating, but a little sanding will fix that.

Cost was $70/wheel. That included; blasting, paint, clear coat.

Although the colour didn't match the chosen swatch, Im ok with the results.

Had to go to National Tyres to remove each tyre and then refit. That cost $20 per wheel.

Best bet for what you want would be to approach a smash repair shop and tell them what you want. We have done it at my work before, had customers drop off a car we put it on the hoist and leave it up there, send wheels round the corner to our tyre guy and get tyres off then we paint the rims chosen colour. Then put it all back together again.

Are you on crack? White rims will stay clean for less time than it will take you to clean them.

Hope you have a good wheel brush

BTW last time i think my boss charged about $100 per wheel to paint some clubsport 17's gloss black. That was just the 4 bare rims being dropped off to the workshop. So $150-200 per wheel at Alliance is not to far of the mark for what your gonna be charged at most places.

fucking lolwut? $100 per rim to be powdercoated? Bit expensive don't you think? I took 5 18" rims to Diamond Powdercoaters in Welshpool and had them stripped, primed and sprayed for $250 TOTAL.
