Hi guys,

Just starting to tick off bits and pieces that need doing.

My car had sti seats when I bought it, but wernt included in sale, so now thats its running they have come out.

Problem is during install/removal of the seats, the thread at the front bolt hole on the passanger seat has been ruined which means I cant get a bolt in there to fully secure the seat.

Ideas to resolve this?

Thanks.

this is prob last ditch solution, would it be possible to weld a bolt into the hole and then use a nut instead in the rail to secure the seat

What is this helicoil you speak of?

http://www.helicoil.in/helicoil.htm

basically drill the hole out, tap it to a larger thread size, and insert the 'insert' which brings it back down to the original thread size/pitch.

don't ask me where to get one one, never had the misfortune of needing one!

however.. upon thinking about it, there probably isn't enough metal depth for a helicoil...might just be better off tapping it to a larger thread and using a bigger bolt.

basically with a helicoil you buy a kit, you drill out the hole slighly bigger run a recoil tap down it then screw in the helicoil which is a little stainless steel thing that replaces the original thread they come as a kit with everything you need

I used to sell these when i worked a Heatley's TJ.

Any fastner Supplier should stock these.

Helicoil will solve the issues... embos (embelton engineering) did one for me once-apon-a-time

ive seen the hole in the floor TJ, helicoil wont fix, its atleast 20mm wide (it pulled the whole thread out) the only thing you can do it weld a 10x1.25mm nut to the back of a peice of steel, then weld that bit to the seat mount in the floor.

i told you this before :P

i would retap the thread or like andy said weld a nut on the arse of it

So much was going on at the time I forgot the exact issue Andy!

like Rads S13 .... had like 20 washeres packed on one of the threads ... if i remember correctly Marc was responsible ?

Go and get a spreader plate like the ones they use for mounting harness bolts.

Put it under the floor, and get a high tensile bolt to suit.

It's strong and I'm sure if there is a sufficient surface under the floor for it to sit against, it'll work.

P.S. West Racing did my helicoil many years ago in my RX7 when I stripped the seat hole bolt out, but any workshop can do it.

If Andy thinks you can't do it, then you'll have to try one of the solutions mentioned above.

The helicoils are quite easy to do yourself and you can buy the kits at coventrys or veales.
Just use the drill to drill out the hole to the correct size, run the tap through the hole and then wind the insert in with the tool in the kit.

Or google a thing called nutserts they are nuts that you can rivet into the metal that you can then fit the bolt into.

Another thing to try is if you can get access to the back of the hole, like a raised section is to drill the hole out and then put a bolt in from the back and use it like a stud and just put a nut on after the seat is fitted.

Drill it, tap bigger thread, use bigger bolt to suit the thread??

ha, the liberty's arent a simple case of it bolting to the flat part of the floor, where its exposed from the other side, its torn the front left thread clean out, leaving a preetty rough looking hole. Its in the actual raised cross brace (if you would call it that) that runs the entire width of the car, holding all the front seat mounting points.

the steel is maybe 2-3mm thick, cant tap it, the original nut that was on the underside is long gone. The old seats when they wereput in were nicely cross threaded, when pulling out this bolt, the whole nut & part of the steel holding it there came out with it...

legally, cant redrill into the floor for a mounting hole. (as its considered structural)
but end of the day, the pits would never pick it if you had to get a yellow off anyways.

weld in a new plated section for that, and then either tap it or weld the bung on.
easier to go for the "fresh start" rather than working with a "rough looking hole"

Maybe cut section out from a wreck and have welded back in .. Being front bolt you want it solid for Tj and his hard launches ..

whatever you do . do it properly, seat ripping off in a crash would not be good.......

No ive gone to all the trouble of finding out the right way to fix it, only to silicone to the seat down tomorrow.

whats on the underside?
drill through and use a nut and bolt.

U can tap any size steel use to tap 50 60mm plate at work for a while

like the other boys said weld a nut underneth or a bolt poking though should do it fine even the problem already fixed I bet

you tap a 10mm hole in a peice of metal 3 mm thick, and sit on that seat then :P

nothing wrong with breaking out the mig welder, put a patch on the floor and either go the nut undernether or the bolt protruding as a stud. just protect ya windows and trims

hahah indeed, fixed it fine!

Just weld a plate under the hole with a bolt threaded up through it and nut it down.

Welded a plate in, and added a nut to the equation.
