Hey all,
Anyone here a Reserve at all? I'm considering quitting my retail job and joining up to the Army reserves, any idea what pay is like? I know it's tax free but what's an average salary like?
Also keen to know what's involved in the lifestyle, ie how often you go, what you do, what's expected of you, leave, bassically all aspects involved in it.
Cheers,
Terry

Army Reserves aren't a full time job. Ready Reserves is 1 year full time and 3 or 4 years part time.
Just join the Navy. See the world, save heaps of cash, root as many bitches as possible in as many countries as possible, then come home and you're set.

I study at uni btw, so really just looking for something to get me by, the idea of getting to learn engineering or whatever in the Army is a bit appealing too.

Yeah im in the reserves. As stated its a part time job, consisting of a 4 or 5 week basic training course in Kapooka, then once youre in its every tuesday night from 7pm-10pm. Every couple of weeks trhere will be a weekend training exercise, usually going from 7pm friday night to 2pm sunday.
Then there are courses you will need to do to be qualified rank and trade (meaning you dont get your proper pay till your all trained up) courses range from a few days to a couple of weeks full time, and can be anywhere in Aus.
bear in mind that if you cant attend anything, there pretty understanding, as long as you put in a leave application with a decent reason. There are many opportunities for more work if your keen for it, i know my unit has had people do 4 months full time in malaysia, same same for solomon islands, theres darwin training, and tons of other stuff that pops up.
Pay is dependant on what your rank is, and what your qualified to do. I think im on about $120ish a day, plus travel expense and anything else they can milk out of the system. Its not a lot of money, but its good for a second job and its tax free. I think there is a limit of about 120-150 days a year you can work so thats about $15k. But they need to have work for you to do, you cant just rock up and sit around scratching your balls. If theres no work you cant come in during the weeks. There are also money perks for certain things like being part of this reserve response force crap you get a bonus, and every year there is some medicare tax bonus thing of $600 (i dont know exactly what it is, i just get 600 and be happy).
Almost never going to get deployed to a warzone, unless you have a trade they require. And if you want to learn a trade in the reserves im pretty sure they do similar to scholorships so say you want to be a mechanic, you work as an apprentice in civi life and the the army pays you some cash and pays for training or tafe. but thats only in the electrical mechanical engineers. Most other interesting jobs have no real useful skills in civi life.
But yeah, its good fun, gotta have the right attitude, but its worth it for the extra bit of cash. And you get to shoot shit and blow shit up!!! Whats not to like.
Anyway PM me if you want to know more

^^ I think that's preety much all I really need to know, will head down to a recruitment place soon and sort myself out.
Serious question, do I have to cut my hair? because I'm getting no bitches if I've got no hair.

It has to be short, neat, of a natural colour and no extremes of style. No visible piercings or beards either.
Don't have to go the full shaved head though.

Basic training make you shave your head to a No. 2 length. No if's or buts. But after basic it just has to be neat and no hair past the collar etc etc

Never used to have to shave your head for basic, when did that change?

That's been happening for years. My old man was based at Kapooka in the early 90s and the shaved heads was how you picked the noobs wandering around town.

Last I heard, full timers and reserves did the same basic training. No reason for them to be treated any different during basic.

I did basic in 2002 and it was joint full time/chocs. Everyone was ordered to get there hair cut, so if you refused they would charge you and basicly try and get rid of you (it was on the first day of basic, if you cant handle getting your hair cut then your not gonna handle the army)
2 haircuts at Kapooka when i was there (7 week course) one on the first day and then one in the last week so you looked good for your march out parade. But im sure its changed for the 4 week course now.

4 weeks!!! I spent almost 12 weeks at Kapooka then a further 12 at Singo. Sounds like a day course is all you'll need in the future.

As long as your BMI is below 33, you can proceed to an assessment day where it's verified among many other things.
You only need to perform one fitness test throughout the recruitment process & it's not until the enlistment day (after you have passed everything & been presented a letter of offer) or just before hand.
Army standard for males is 7.5+ on the beep test plus 15 pushup's/45 situp's IIRC. So in other words it's a piece of piss.
Best of luck :)
