I'll be there from the 5-12th Nov.. Camplung Mas is a pretty cheap 2 star, bout $15 a night or something, 24 hr pool bar, aircon, safe, tv in room, all ya need to party it up.

Plenty of them, depends where you're staying.

I'm there in 14 days - Staying at the Mercure about 185/night is still cheap for 4-star :)

Bounty is over-rated and run down.. I wouldn't stay there again, didn't think much of it at all. If you're going over there with a partner she prob won't enjoy it a whole lot either but if ya single you'll have fun with the boys. Don't expect too many girls there though, it's a cockfest the wholeeeee time!

+1. Just got back from there. Definatly not what i expected at the bounty. WAY too many groups of 10+ Guys. Ratio is like 8 to 1.

I think all the parties and hotel filled with girl days are past tense now.. You can party with plenty of dudes but that's about it. One chick got up on the pool bar and did a little dance one arvo like 3pm and got her tits out, aside from that there was dudes dropping pants all over the show at the Bounty parties they have on stage and all the girls bailed and wouldn't get fuckall out - worst.

I was with my mrs this time so wasn't phased, and met some cool birds from Melbourne there who didn't spend much time at the pool anyway but had more luck at Camplung Mas previously, fair ratio of girls there who just want a cheap bed so they can booze the rest up the wall lol

I will be there from the 30th Oct for 7 days thanks for the info will look into it. I won the flight to go to bali over a poker game the other week so now just need a cheap hotel to complete the win!

Never been to Bali... I hope its what it is all hyped up to be!

Don't get anything below 4 star, something like 80bucks a night! compare that to ours its pretty cheap. a two star hotel over there had these bed bugs that fukn bite, u wake up with a shit load of red dots and itchy as hell!!! I have done my research on a few hotels but all the pics and all the glossy flyers dont do any justice for me! I have flown all over the world (had my fair share of shit hotels). I was just hoping on some feedback from ppl who have been to Bali if its shit place or a place to go just to Party.

So any information on Hotels, where to where not to go, clubs, things to do and see would be great...

BOSS 290 thanks for your input everyone has there opinion, no hard feelings!

Before I'd been to China I had heard all sorts of shit from people about how shit it is. Beijing is now one of my favorite cities in the world.

Cities are like music, everyone has their own opinion on whats "good", and nobody is wrong.

that sounds about right.. holidayplanet.com.au often run full package turnkey holidays 11 days for ~$800 ballpark some time ago

you can go there and barter with them or you can pay up front, but from what people say its worth paying $20 more and getting a sick hotel

I go to Broome at least twice a year now, anywhere from October to March. It's off-peak, flights and accomodation are cheaper than going to Indonesia. The friendly folk speak English and dont pester you with the cheap shit junk to sell.

Broome is a hole. And I've been there.. Fuck walking around the town on pay day, constantly crossing the road with gf trying to get away from the smelly, drunk coons. The only good place about it was the beach.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Jakarta is full of Muslims, and Bali is full of non-Muslims. This is why Jakarta is slapping massive taxes etc on booze going into Bali and trying to introduce laws to banish girls wearing bikinis there.. Seems odd that Muslims are getting bombed but it wouldn't suggest something is headed Bali's way.

Some people don't have a budget to go to NZ or party it up in WA for a couple of weeks, and Bali provides an awesome, cheap destination to escape to in OUR winter when it's perfect weather over there. There are different budgets for different people over there, and you certainly don't get hassled at all areas.

Seems the only people against Bali are those who are cashed up to the max! I'm all aboard that bandwagon if someones gonna shout me a nice holiday instead of going to Bali

This is why bali is bad. It attracts the lower demographic of australian people, these people generally make dumb decisions and going to bali is one of them. Save up spend the big coin and holiday in Australia.

AGIT8D
18-07-2009, 02:23 PM
I wouldn't consider myself or most of my friends to be in a lower demographic but between houses and cars and 'getting ahead' when it comes to taking some time to have a holiday or party it up it's cheaper to do it in Bali. Bali is a lot bigger than Kuta, most forget that. My gf's Mum and Nana own a Villa in Bali and her Nan lives over there. It's over the other side of the island from Kuta and it's awesome.

Til you've travelled around and had a good look at the place it's pretty unfair to judge. I could happily retire there, bang for your buck (pun NOT intended) ;)

Hard Rock Hotel would be a fairly safe option, i went last september, and it was mostly occupied by friendly young adults, not teenage fuckwits and pissy idiots, pretty close to the beach, but has a Narly pool of its own anyway.

cheap hotel for QUIET stays in Kuta would be Adhi Dharma, but no 24hr bars, which sucked shaft. quite new, they were renovating MEGA in 08, so it looked promising.

Barong hotel is mostly full of mature adults, and its right in the middle of the shop/food/club spot.

But Definitely stick with ANYTHING 4 star, you're asking for bed bugs and trouble otherwise.
Seminyak and Ubud are SOO nice for a relaxing time but, spent a few days in Sem, just doing NOTHING, cheap massages and great food, calming.

As for nightlife, just follow the masses, everyone there just KNOWS where its at on any particular night, and dont do pseudoephedrin pills and NOT drink some BOTTLED water, you WILL pass out. haha

anything else that people wanna edit or add, feel free.

Ive stayed at the vira bali hotel before, it was good clean and cheap and stuff. Next time i want a place with a pool bar because that place just had pool service its not as cool.

Getting around is so cheap so its not a drama if you stay a bit futher away from the main places.

Depends what sorta mrs you have. If they're pretty adventurous and out there and won't be annoyed by the hassle of walking the markets etc (read: walking any street) then stay in Kuta - plenty of nice places listed above.

Otherwise go stay in Seminyak - It's a toned down version, lots of nice hotels, great restaurants/beaches and a short trip into Kuta to hit up the nightlife.

We got "hooked up" at the Bounty for 8 nights in their "best rooms" (fuck knows what that means Ive never been) for $390 bucks.

No idea if thats good or not, but you cant beat that for a cheap holiday

AGIT8D
11-06-2010, 07:21 AM
TJ that's about right - I too haven't seen the "best rooms" but I've stayed at the hotel. It's about $30-40 for a normal room I think. Bounty is fairly run down now, some A/C's not working, cold water in some rooms etc, but if you get onto them straight away they'll transfer your room if they can or try to fix it - just means you might not be in the flashy room.

Expect lots of cock and minimal tittage during the "in house" game nights they have (drinking games/entertainment etc) but you'll never be short of finding someone to booze hard with, it's party central.

I hate staying in anything 4/5 star in bali. If i wanted a flash hotel, I wouldn't be staying in Bali.
The best hotels i've stayed at in bali have been 2/3 star, and I've found nothing wrong with them (Bali Village, Garden View, VillaRumas Manus)

I don't know why everyone (as in general people I talk about it over here with) complains about the sellers, dirty streets, low standard of things etc;
People seem to forget it's a third world country, if you want clean streets and a pleasant experience, go to fucking Canada.
Why people go to a third world country and expect first class service is beyond me.

I reckon Bali is great. I've been there twice now once in august and once for NYE. NYE was way too hot and humid. August was awesome.

I stayed at the barong over NYE and that was OK the bed was shit but it was an ac room with two pools.

The first time i went i stayed at the white rose with the missus and that was amazing such a good hotel.

You get what you pay for from my experience.

The food over there is generally great and cost fuck all, booze costs fuck all.

Start the day with an expresso martini then continue on for the whole day get rank at the sky lounge / bounty / paddys then eat a kebab on the way home. Costs you like $50 buck aussie for the day.

Would love to go again this year at some stage

Legian Paradiso. Ugly as fuck out the front, but is a pretty awesome place for the price you pay. Awesome swim up bar, super clean rooms (and spacious), cheap massages next door, awesome DVD shops down the road, and its only a 5 - 10 min walk to the centre.

Anyone who thinks bali doesnt have top class hotels hasnt been to ayana or what was formerly the ritz carlton. Its somewhere around $800au per night and it is by far the flashest place ive ever been to in my life.

I think ive got some pictures of it somewhere on my comp so when i get a chance ill post them up, But there is a cliff that is right on the beach and you pop your head over expecting to see the small beach part and there is a bar/ restaurant hanging out of the cliff face with glass walls all around the bar and its got its own pool as well.

Speak to student flights, you dont have to be a student. They gave me the best deals. I met a guy in bali who gets his hotel when he gets there coz its cheaper. But if you havent been before i wouldnt recommend.

August is awesome

You have to pay 10 usd for under ten days and 25 usd for over 10 days on arrival.

150k rupiah to leave? or 300k cant remember.

I've stayed in a 4 star and a 2 star. The four star was alot better but the two star is ok if you just want a room. Legian is very close to kuta and taxis cost bugger all regardless of where you stay.

Book yourself online

$25USD on entry I think? and 100k rup to get out? I can't remember..

Dodgy as fuck how exactly? If you're going to party you use the room to sleep in - for a max of 4-6 hours a day. The rest of the time you're doing stuff. If you want a nice holiday resort then anything 4 star upwards should suit your needs, Dynasty is the best I've stayed at and was nice (10 years ago).

Mates stayed there last year when we all went over. Really nice man hey! Food there is absolutely killer!! We went there to eat about 3 times cause it was so nice, mrs was obsessed with the angel hair pasta dish (tuna I think?)

They make VERY strong tequila sunrises hahahahah. 3 full shots with a dash of juice or whatever in it. Wouldn't mind staying somewhere like that next time. You walk straight out onto a busy street but don't get much hassle unless you venture over to the beach. Do buy fireworks and do let them off on the beach :)

No such thing as the under 10 day visa anymore. Visa is $25 US, can pay in other currencies but american is the easiest. You'll need 150k rupiah to get out..

I generally stay in Legian at the Niksoma or Kumala Pantai depending on who i'm with - stayed in Tuban at the holiday inn baruna earlier this year - awesome hotel but pretty overpriced, super quiet (if youre wanting to lax out, heaps of poolside cabanas). Didn't really rate that area though..
I like being able to go out of my hotel and buy a new dress or get my money changed etc and there was none of that in those streets..
Kuta is tops, but prefer to stay on the coast and on not so busy streets.. Legian market shopping is more laxed than Kuta.

Next time we head over will defers be hitting up a villa in seminyak.

So many people have different views on Bali but its all what you make of it (hell, the first time i went i hated it and didnt leave the hotel for 3 days - now i go a few times a year) - and can't go wrong with a 3hr flight and generally $400-600 return... We got AA tickets for $200 return earlier this year - no dramas at all flying with them cept for the lack of leg room but who cares for that cheap and short a flight..

Highly recommend eating at Ku De Ta, Kori, The Flying Piano (best arak attack in Bali), Lanai to name a few. If you're looking for an awesome driver let me know.

Heading over later this year to stock up on part a container worth of outdoor furniture, mirrors etc, can't wait.

so for those who have their accommodation sorted...

what are the general do's n don'ts while over there?

for fair ive picked up on;
- wash your hands after touching everything, including money
- dont have your wallet in your back pocket
- drink bottled water only

what about how much cash do you need to carry, US$ or Rp?
can chicks carry a handbag safely?
etc etc
so what about all the other shit you take for granted here, that you should think twice about over there?

TJ
03-08-2010, 05:00 PM
I was just about to ask the same thing

Going Sat 4am, never been. So far the main things have been dont swallow the water if its not bottled, and carry all of your main cash bar a small token amount hidden. (so if you get pulled up by corrupt cops they will take that and leave you be)

Liana-
03-08-2010, 05:27 PM
easy enough to carry a handbag, but never put it down.. i usually have a little clutch with money, camera, tissues (just incase for toilet time) and that detol antibac stuff you rub on your hands...
its easier to shop on the street with rupiah.. take US for your visa
red cordial / gastro stop (just incase)
dont let any little kids grab ur hand or put bracelets on ya, or give them money otherwise youll have 100 following you all the way back to your hotel, or tell people your name unless you want them to remember it every time u walk past
slash any price they tell by half or more
dont pay more than 35k for a tshirt

there are sooo many more things, you'll pick it up when you're there, if not you'll learn for next time!

have fun and have an arak attack for me.

Deke
03-08-2010, 08:58 PM
yup pretty much what was said above , pretty much most clothing isnt worth more then 40k, bintang singles like 20k or so.also i woudnt get into a taxi even if it had a meter my mate got into one and got charged 400k for going somewhere he didnt even want to go.Tj i wouldnt carry all your money on you bar a little bit , most hotels have storage box;s even though i hid mine in my hotel room and would only change how much i needed say $100 during the day then $100 during the night which was about 800k, when i went clubs/bars i would come home with almost nothing but that was shouting mates drinks. if you want to get around get around on scooter either hire one (which was the best thing i ever did) or just yell transport in the middle of the street and you will get flocked and its cheap like less then 20k depending where your going. oh and if your buying shirts off the street buy atleast a size bigger if not 2 i bought over 10 shirts put them in the wash once and now are to small.

EFTPOS cards and VISA debit cards stay in hotel safe unless you are getting cash out. If your wallet does get stolen then at least there is minimal money lost. Mates bank account got wiped of 1k via an eftpos card being stolen.

AGIT8D
04-08-2010, 08:18 AM
I don't at all agree with the taxi thing. Only use the blue taxis and always ask if they HAVE THE METER RUNNING... Some will some will not. I went to Bali twice last year and my gf went 3 times, we've never ever had an issue with a blue taxi. Once you start bartering for a taxi or getting into any random old van for a lift is when you'll run into problems. Have been offered pills in the ashtray and almost got in a smash on with one "taxi driver" at my hotel for miscommunication over the price.

Coke etc comes in glass bottles - don't take the straw out and drink from the bottle, you'll get sick. Bottled water for everything, including brushing teeth. Don't drink the shower water. For all other drinks a straw is usually provided. Use it.

Try not to step on the little offerings the Balinese will put out each morning for their god. You'll see them and know what they are soon enough.

You can get all sorts of cool fantas and drinks over there so don't be shy to bring a bottle of vodka into the country with you. It'll work out a lot cheaper than trying to buy a bottle of spirits when you arrive there, as the Javanese tend to block most of the alcohol going in and bump the taxes up which increases the price substantially.. But it hasn't really affected the price of bar drinks at all, especially if you cash in on happy hour.

I kept all my money, passport, bank cards etc at a safebox in my hotel behind the concierge area. Depending on what I was doing that day I would carry anywhere from 300-1Mn. Always kept my wallet in the back pocket without any hassles but I generally travel in a group where pick pocketing wouldn't be easy.

cheers for the info! i herd only to use blue taxi's too

All taxi's are blue. You want the bluebird taxi's (basically any taxi that is metered). Stupidly cheap.

As mentioned abov is take Imodium or similar from the start, not only when you get the squirts. My guts are fairly iron, but even some of my stools were borderline when I was there last (early July). You find yourself inevitably drinking the water via ice in drinks at bars etc.

Only other bit of advice is when chilling down on Kuta beach and the many bars, dont look at the top of the bottle of beer - it will be rusty and it isnt bintang.

Best advice i can give?

Learn this phrase;

tidak terima kasih.

Te-Duk Tree-ma Cus-se.

Means "No thank you", with many long term stay aussies in bali many locals leave foreigners alone straight away if you answer them in indonesian if they start to barter.

Also don't fret too much with this whole hygiene thing, its a third world country ffs, everything is pretty much 'not up to standards' hygiene wise, unless you've been sheltered your whole life, you will be fine.
Don't drink the water is rule number one, but i mistakenly brushed my teeth and took a mouthful of water in the shower all the time over there, it's just habit and you're usually fine.

You can get money from ATM's over there or use your credit card at some places but be aware that you'll be charged an exchange rate from your bank, which is never as good as cash.

I usually just take 1-2k in AUD with me and swap it at the little kodak shops there. They give you one of the best rates without ripping you off out of your notes. Take a little pocket calc and crunch the numbers yourself and then count the cash they give you to make sure you are not being ripped off.

I did that the first time Dan. The second time i went to atms's and got 1.5 million at a time.

You get clean money and a good exchange rate. That was with ANZ dont know about other banks.

Stayed here last month:
http://www.niloufar-villa.com/

Not cheap at $US875-1k (was US$1.5-2k when we went) a night but 5 double rooms (huge beds - could easily sleep 3 or people if you're keen on that), a theatre which can sleep another 4.

They also provide 2 scooters (sorry, I crashed one) and 2 vans with drivers that will take you wherever you want for 10 hours a day, per hour after that is 200k (~$20).

A huge breakfast is served every morning with the best watermelon juice I've ever tasted.

But the best part is you can make as much a mess you want at night and by the time you wake up it'll look the same as it did when you first arrived.

Downside - its approx 25min from Kuta

Also apparently for sale at a cool US$1mil

Yeah got the Garden Club benefits. It would probably be cheaper if I bought everything seperately, but meh, wasn't a great deal extra. I'll just make sure I'll go and smash as much free food and cocktails as I can!

I wanted the lagoon access room, but were all booked out. Didn't actually think of mixing it, ah well.

How much did you pay?

Ended up being AUD$1775pp for 16 nights with a half/half split between the Chalet and Lagoon rooms.

Can't really beat the Padma for bang for buck, even with all the new hotels further up the coast in Seminyak.

it's around, better to prevent it than game it. you don't know you've been bitten most of the time a mozzie is eating you anyway.. 20% of the time they hit a nerve which is when you feel it, the rest you either see them doing it or you are itchy later.

We got home on the Tuesday and by Fri arvo she was in hospital, Was only in ther the first time for 4hrs before being sent home high as on pain killers. It lasted for 2 1/2 weeks with 4 more trips back to hospital and the qurantine joint as well. The only thing they give you is panidene forte and iburophen and tell you to be strong. It layed her up real good, and she doesn't recall seeing any mozzies either.

just got back from bali, stayed at The Niche hotel, in Kuta. it isn't a huge hotel, only about 40 rooms iirc.

They were doing some renovations when we arrived, but it was finished in 2 days.

decent food, cheap drinks, 1-2 minute walk to the pubs/clubs.

the grill house at end of the laneway does THE BEST chicken schnitzel burger, period!

Also some of the nicest staff i've ever dealt with. would definitely recommend to friends!

Bumpage.
Looking to stay for a week or so in October.
Dont drink or party hard or anything, so after a more relaxed time with decent food, some shopping etc.

recommendations on where to stay, around $100/night seems to be what i'll need to spend for something decent?

If you're not too much into drinking or partying - stay in either Seminyak (awesome restaurants, quiet beaches, some real cool night spots for a laid back drink etc.) or somewhere on the other side of the airport (incredible beaches, quiet, much more relaxed).

AGIT8D
30-08-2011, 08:49 AM
^^ Yeah pretty much. No point staying in Kuta if you're not into that sorta thing.. Nusa Dua, Seminyak, Senua(sp) are all much more relaxed places than Kuta. Keep an eye on Spreets, Livingsocial, Scoopon etc for Bali deals, should see one every week or two, just need to land one in the right area.

Read some reviews that it tends to be popular with the partiers given its location, and hence can be a bit rowdy?

Not really.

Hell last year we stayed @ the bounty, party capital, and every single night without fail got a nights sleep with ease. Solid doors, and good layout keep the noise away.

Padma is nice.

I got back last week, stayed in Villas in Seminyak. Was freaking awesome, within 3 minutes by taxi from Ku de ta and Potato head. Make sure you have lunch at P head, Ku de ta was full of posh Russian guys who looked like they would kill you for looking at them twice.

Happy to give you a list of non party ideas, I did those during the day.

I can't picture White Rose being rowdy

As others suggested though, look more towards Seminyak... Padma was good... don't confuse it with Casa Padma though, that place is a hole and where i slipped on wet tiles and dislocated my knee and they didnt give a shit

went there last month and stayed at the 101 legian in kuta. very close to everything but more of a hotel than a resort. our room was fine, but our mates room was shit.
stunk really bad and had a leaking air con etc. proly wouldnt stay there again as we were totally over kuta in 2 days but had booked there for 6 days...

on our last day check out was at 12 and our flight was at 1am, and they wanted an extra $100 to stay for the 12 hrs, even though we only paid $60 a night originally.
so we hit up a cheap hotel in legian. cant remember what it was called but it was ok for the price.

much prefer legian though and we are flying back on monday for another week but this time we are staying at the jayakarta. ive stayed there before a year ago and it is much more luxurious as a resort. plus away from the hussle n bussle but you can walk straight out into the legian shopping area easily. thats about $85-100 a night depending on where you book.

so far the best deals i have found iare on agoda. ive booked 3 different hotel stays through them and they are always spot on

On the main road into Seminyak - little place, local food, absolutely awesome and cheap as!

http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/296191_10150346646871944_506066943_9664433_603730_ n.jpg

Just up the road like 100m worth, nice food, STRONG drinks nice atmosphere

If you are in Seminyak and dont eat here you are a fool - awesome food, awesome drinks, very well priced considered but it is not bargain basement pricing. Go during day for lunch, chill by the pool or out on the lawn.

http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/302956_10150346565001944_506066943_9663243_4638273 _n.jpg

Steak sandwich - great lunch

I DO NOT recommend pizza club in seminyak - shit pizzas and not cheap - though after a day of drunken abuse at safari park they seemed ok.

Thats all seminyak.

Make you spend a night or two in kuta - totally different vibe, a bit more rough, but alot more party.

Tons of good places to eat if you go in during the day.

http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/309154_10150346538446944_506066943_9662796_3843791 _n.jpg

I ate there with the palooooch and it was good food, but the drinks were a little average. I couldnt drink my second long island ice tea. on the main strip of legian near the bali memorial.

http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/s720x720/311609_10150346539281944_506066943_9662820_2969885 _n.jpg

in poppies lane 1 - well known. outstanding food, a mix of local and aussie style foods, well priced, etc etc.

AND if you party hard enough, this place will be somewhere you will see without doubt

http://phingelicious.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Indon1259-20100119.jpg

kuta beach mcdonalds. taste 10 times better than aussie maccas, and cheap as fuck.

While I dont have a pic - finally - rainbow cafe, across from the bounty hotel in poppies 1 - cheap as fuck meals. delicious meals. cheap as fuck bingtangs.

I stayed at the Dewi Sri last year, just off Jalan Legian in Kuta. 3 stars I think, freshly renovated, was about $50US per night twinshare. Would definitely recommend it.

Haha bought our security gaurds 3 chicken burgers from maccas last year - the ENTIRE week we were there they would do anything for us. Lost room key - normally 200 Aus dollars to fix, they broke in for us and they got us a new key made for 10 bucks. Brings a sense of humilty to it all, the things we take for granted so often they cherish as a special treat.

digging up an old thread here but:

1st time in bali, planning on winging it, and booking accommodation once we get there.

winging it wont give you the best prices. and a majority of the popular places will be booked out

we asked to stay an extra night at one place and although we had booked it for $65 per night, they wanted the full rate of $120 per night

best bet is to hit up agoda.com
i have booked through them a few times and always gotten good deals. found a place for $25 for the extra night we needed.
plus they have small reviews on the places so you get a heads up of what to expect

yeh i think you're hit and miss when it comes to winging it.. had mates do it and score cheap rooms at the last minute but would never risk it myself.. i reckon spend a little more and stay somewhere at least in the upper end of cheap ~3 star accomo.. somewhere like Pelangi/breezes/puri raja/Haven/melasti beach resort/kumala pantai or down tuban way at Bali Garden/green garden/Febris etc.. if theres a few of you even a cheap villa might work out well priced like Villa Coco etc

101 legian is ok
the pool is nice to watch the traffic on the street
the location is great for staggering home from the clubs

our room there was fine, although very small compared to others such as the legian beach hotel, and jayakarta
our mates room stunk like sour cream or something. turns out if he kept the bathroom door shut n a towel across the bottom, it wasnt so bad...
hallways are very echo prone and you can hear people coming n going at all hours

keep in mind though, that it is more of a hotel than a resort
