Alright,
I've been getting some money together and I want to get an s14,
First question,
Any one know what to look out for when buying an s14, any regular problems they have?
Second,
Providing I don't come across one with one already,
How much would you estimate a black top sr20det engine conversion + box to cost??
AND Say I won the lottery one day, roughly how much is the strawberry front conversion usually? (Putting s15 front end on it)?
Probably some stupid questions but hey, just thought i'd ask some people who might know some shit about their cars :)
Cheers in advance.

all s14's came with an sr20det, so not really an issue needing to convert
pretty strong car all round, no major issues I am aware of, but beware one thats been modified incorrectly (especially with a few going around with wolf ecu's)
i think the one problem there will be is the VCT gear, you will hear a rattle coming from the engine bay, search for the sound on youtube. can't think of anything else as i don't have an s14 but i'm sure someone will chime in.
and afaik all s14s come with the blacktop sr20det
and as for strawberry face conversion, wait for colt75 to see this thread

S15's can be had for $18/19k these days and the S14a anywhere below$14k
Whats the difference in price for an S15??
stock for stock i would guess about 7 or 8k
i came to this wall when i was thinking s14 or 15?
question is, do you want to mod? thats what made my decision.
i could have afforded an S15 but realised i wouldn't have plenty of money to save and mod.
being performance cars, once you mod, you constantly need to have a couple grand handy should anything go wrong.
so i decided to buy S14. I now have a fun, easy to mod car, and no problems with muula should anything go wrong.
Piece of mind!!!
PS. i have a work car, so that kinda helps too:)
hope this helps with ur decision

btw are the s14 gear boxes supposed to not let you go into 1st if you are moving over 20ks? I can force it in but it feels like car abuse.

just for the know, out of all the sr20 g/boxes the series 1 s14 g/boxes are the weakest

Correct me if i'm wrong but you really shouldn't be doing that mate, as your busting up you syncro(spelling?)
I don't ever put into 1st unless i'm standing still or atleast under 5km/hr

SR boxes don't have 1st gear syncro's. You shouldn't force it in, you should be pretty much stationary to put it into 1st gear.

That explains it cheers. I will go over speed bumps in 2nd now.
SR boxes don't have 1st gear syncro's. .
you sure about that? i really dont think thats right at all
i would say it will have synchros on 1st, but at that speed it really helps to double de-clutch & rev match

Yes I am sure. Boxes don't have 1st gear synchros, as there's nothing to synchronise.
the last box i can remember that didnt have syncro on 1st was the 3speed used in hg holdens.
i will see what i can find

cant find any pics or info to back myself up (in a quik search) but your wrong.
there is something to sync if the car is moving & you want to select 1st gear.
you can feel the syncros working
surely someone on here can settle this?

i always thought they had 1st gear synchros, but a 1st gear lock out to prevent selection when moving...
nah not a lock out, just helps if you know how to drive :P
The first synchronized transmission system was introduced by Cadillac in 1929. The modern cone system was developed by Porsche and introduced in the 1952 Porsche 356; cone synchronizers were called "Porsche-type" for many years after this. In the early 1950s only the second-third shift was synchromesh in most cars, requiring only a single synchro and a simple linkage; drivers' manuals in cars suggested that if the driver needed to shift from second to first, it was best to come to a complete stop then shift into first and start up again. With continuing sophistication of mechanical development, however, fully synchromesh transmissions with three speeds, then four speeds, five speeds, six speeds and so on became universal by the 1960s. Reverse gear, however, is not synchromesh, as there is only one reverse gear in the normal automotive transmission and changing gears in reverse is not required.
according to this link 1967 was when datsun made a 4speed all syncro box for their silvia..

edit:just read it again, seems it was actually 1965 not 67

never beleive the internets!
hahah ben.
im done searching LOL
I really cant see nissan dropping the 1st gear synchro for the SR boxes, but if you have any info Ben I would love to read it
"The Silvia was the first Datsun to have synchromesh on all forward gears.
She had a 4 speed close ratio gearbox with Porsche type servo-synchros and
a floor change selector."
