I THINK they tested that car somewhat recently to see how the old cars faired as apposed to todays standards. It wasn't actually when they were released.

regarding the commodore, last time i read a thread regarding that exact crash they were saying it was tested with a heavy weight in the boot. You can see the ass end doesnt start to slow when the front hits, just keeps plowing on.It also had a vid of a little flat bed truck with a load on the back, same thing but demolished the cab.

yep.

I don't think that crash "test" means shit - it's not really anything official so it cannot be compared to other real crash tests.

old vid but still enjoyable to watch though..

In the defence of the VB...

The test was conducted in 1992 and was part of a series of tests to commission our crash test facility. The test was of the drive system, not the car.

The car was a standard 'second hand' car except that the tail shaft was removed. 300kg of sand ballast was placed in the footwells and boot and a ballast dummy (75kg) was placed on the rear seat.

The test speed was 100km/h into a solid concrete reaction block.

This compared to the ANCAP standard frontal offset impact test:

Frontal impact takes place at 64kph and the car strikes deformable barrier. The vehicle has 2 adult dummies in the front seats. The rear seats have an 18 month old and 3 year old child dummies in appropriate child restraints.

In this test, 40% of the car, on the driver's side, initially makes contact with a crushable aluminium barrier at 64km/h.
