The sports classes held at Malaga are Olympic Style, where as any sparring/fighting we do at comps/classes is ITF / WTF / Freestyle.
Used to do a bit of boxing in high school, old man used to train me. I'd like to get back into martial arts again but maybe go for kick boxing this time.

Thanks mate.
I haven't been training/updating my website for a few days because I've got a nasty infection from clinch sparring some filthy foreigner fuck. It left a nice hole in my chest and I have to go to the hospital every day to get the infection cut away from the muscle. Hopefully it'll be better in 4/5 days and I can start getting ready for this next fight.
I've been in Thailand for 6 months so far, maybe stay here until christmas then go to Hong Kong or Japan for a while.
How are you enjoying Phons? I went there for a while when Rhino and Chris White were training there. Good gym, the trainers made me spew a few times.

Yeh first lesson I yakked ahaha, I love it at Phon's, good they don't push you too hard though, gives you a chance to develop at your own pace rather then struggling to keep up with theirs. I've only been here a month or so but I've signed up for a year, I *hope* to become competitive down the track but I'll see how I develop.
Is it expensive to do your sort of situation over there? obviously the exchange rate is preety awesome for us but I imagine with training most days you don't work do you? Planning on returning to Perth after a while?
Yeh I'm amazed how any type of injury can slow you down, I've had a munted shin from a drunk friend and that killed a good week's worth of training.

.
Can be expensive depending on your individual arrangement with the gym. I can train cheaper in Chiang Mai than in BKK, but the owner of the gym looks after me and it's like family there so I'm happy to pay a little extra and stay here. I got a massive discount on training after 3 months, and if you fight for the gym regularly it's possible to train and live for free, but you have to be fighting every 2 weeks.
I'm working here as a journalist and music teacher.
I don't know when I'll go back to Perth. I love travelling, but I miss my friends and my car and bike as well. I'll go back and open up my own gym eventually.

Yeah, it apparently depends on who the trainer is. The handy thing is that the one I'm looking at training with is reputed to be good and is located pretty close to where I am in Melbourne at the moment (Guest's Martial Arts).
Another option I'm considering (again, neck pending), is hapkido. What I'm looking for is a well rounded-out martial art (grappling, striking, weapon use and defence against weapons, etc.). Hapkido might be more compatible with my prior TKD training, but I'll assess both to see which one feels more right for me.

Taken from my blog, about my fight last week in Thailand.
Ok so it's been one week since my fight and I've stopped hurting enough to sit down at a computer and write about it.
On the night of the fight we all got loaded into the minibus to Pattaya. There was about 14 of us and only 13 seats so I got to share mine and after a 2 hour journey, arrived with a sore back. No problem really but it was a sign of things to come.
We got to the Sityotong 'International Stadium' which in reality is a ring surrounded by go go bars. People can sit at the bar and drink and watch two fools smash on. Great stuff.
We all split up and got food then met back at the 'International Stadium' to 'check weight'. Checking weight involved my trainer and another trainer sitting around a pool table surrounded by gogo dancers, matching everyone up based on rough height and experience. I was up against a Thai who had 10 fights experience, and I found out afterwards, had just gotten out of prison. I also drew the last fight (they probably knew it was going to be a short one) which meant I wasn't fighting until around 12:30am.
So I hung around and watched some fights, met an old ex fighter named Chang who gave me some great advice (keep your hands up) in between sipping his beer. He also let me feel his calf muscle (I didn't ask for this and don't know why old thai men are obsessed with touching each other).
Eventually 12:30 came and I was started to get tired, but excited to get into the ring. I was still surprisingly calm by this stage.
Got into the ring, managed to not fuck up the wai kru and before I knew it the fight was on. First he kicked me square in the arm and I was surprised how hard it was. Followed by a hook and a flurry of punches, none of which got through (thank god for Changs advice). Once that was over I thought 'fuck this' and wanted to knock this guy out. Up until then I thought it was going to be an easier fight than this.
So I managed to hit him with a few shots straight through his guard, and just worked on simple combinations, 1-2-kick, 1-2-hook-kick. I moved him back into the corner and his leg was starting to give out every time I kicked him. I remember having a brief moment thinking I was going to knock him out very shortly when all of a sudden he stepped up and hit me with a knee (left) to my chest. It winded me but before I got a chance to get my breath back or move he pushed my hands down and hit me with the same shot again, just to the right of my sternum. That was enough to drop me and the fight was over.
It wasn't a straight knee, I actually felt like I'd been stabbed and couldn't breathe properly for a couple of days afterwards. I couldn't lay down from sitting or move around without a really intense pain in my chest. It's been getting better slowly, day by day, but one week on it still hurts and I haven't been training. I'm going to try going for a run this afternoon, just 2kms and see how it holds up.
Surprisingly I met the owner of the gym and he wants me to go back to training tomorrow, train for 3 weeks then fight again, which I will do if I can run today no problem.
Although the fight was over quicker then I wanted, I was loving it & pretty happy with how I fought (apart from the knockout, obviously). I wish it had gone on longer but it's all a learning experience isn't it.

Bad luck mate, hard to defend a quick knee to the chest especially when your not ready for it.
What did you mean by "it wasn't a straight knee"? And do you think you would have found it easier if it had been an earlier fight?
evilvl
06-08-2009, 11:11 AM
My girlfriend managed to start recording about 30 seconds before I got knocked out. I'll wack it up later.
Sorry..what I meant by it wasn't a straight knee was that it didn't just feel like a normal knee does. I had sharp stabbing pains around my sternum for days afterwards, couldn't breathe properly and considered I'd damaged the cartliage that holds the sternum together.
If the fight was earlier I wouldn't have been quite so tired, maybe a bit more alert, hell I may have even seen that knee coming and been able to do something about it.

I don't think anythings broken but I did consider that too. The severe pain went away after a few days and my breathings back to normal and now it's just annoying more than anything.

Hey good to hear you're starting training. Hopefully you enjoy getting punched in the face as much as I do! Good luck with it.
There's 3 gyms in my area, two for orphan kids and the place I usually train at, Sasiprapa (www.muaythaisasiprapa.com) - it's expensive for tourists who don't fight and only stay a short time at 25,000 baht a month, 400 baht a session, or 700 baht for 2 training sessions a day. However in Bangkok that's about the standard rate for a quality gym. If you go to a gym in Issan, Ubon or Chiang Mai, you're going to pay about half that.
If you do come to Sasiprapa, I wouldn't recommend staying at the camp. The accomodation is really basic, and the shower is a bucket of cold water. There are places nearby both long term and short term you can stay at for a decent rate.
Where I live, Bang Kapi, is far from central Bangkok and the tourist areas too. but you can get a taxi or train there for about 150 baht one way and takes about 30 mins. It is close to a mall though which has everything you need (including a swimming pool on the roof), cheap markets for knock off goods, and the RCA nightclub strip which is where a lot of thai uni students go to unwind. It's handy to live here, but inconvenient for just a holiday.
Anyway, back to gyms, Sasiprapa is only really good if you're intending to fight I think. The trainers don't spend a lot of time correcting your technique and speak little/no english, but the quality of sparring here is first class, whether you're sparring muay thai, boxing or clinching. It's a great place to prepare for a fight and people including John Wayne Parr, Sean Wright and Zhabar have all trained here.
Couple of gyms in Bangkok I would recommend are -
Kaewsamrit (where Anuwat trains) http://www.kaewsamritgym.com/
Jittis Gym (you'll get pushed to your absolute limit here, great trainers) http://www.jittigym.com/
Or if you want to get away from the distractions and just concentrate on training, my mate has a quality gym down south of Bangkok called KiatPhontip http://www.kiatphontipgym.com/
You can't go wrong with any of these places. If you need any more info or recommendations or want info on gyms in a specific area just let me know.

where can you base your information from?
im not a bujinkan student and never was. but i did study ninjutsu and i know that it was not created out of "thin air" as you say.
if it was made up wouldnt you think it would be advertised as to make money? thats what everyone else does these days.
for reference watch a t.v show called fight science. it quite clearly proves that ninjutsu is not created out of thin air and that hatsumi did not just make it up
and as a question what art do you study?

Whoah. What are you near on 17? Fight science. No good.
And i never mentioned Ninjutsu, only Bujinkan. Which is Muppetry at its finest.
McDojo's make money. Hatsumi definitely just made it up.
Exchanging fight science for education on the matter would be a good start.
As a question? what art? How is that relevant?

im just curious as to what art you do thats all. this is a martial arts and you thread after all.
and hatsumi based his teachings on what he was taught.
if science was what you were looking for to prove bujinkan wasnt "made up" then there is your proof. i believe glenn leavy is a student of bujinkan
mcdojo's? im not following
and how can you just say hatusmi just made it up without proof.

study an art
no amount of books or reading can teach you technique
everyones opinions vary on different martial arts. you saying one school was made out of thin air is the same as me saying it

Bujinkan is not an art let alone Budo. Elements of Ninjutsu are only tucked away in the higher learnings of the various Bugei. Rare and lost in time. There is no single school of curriculum recognised by the japanese faculties known as Bujinkan. Fight science is a joke, as is your mate Glenn Leavy. I do study a Koryu. But wont tell you because your a muppet.

well atleast ive come to the conclusion that you do do an art. like i said i was never a student of bujinkan/or will be. fight science is a show based on proving what is fact and what is fiction. i never said that all martial arts end there because they clearly do not.

I'm pissed that I'm waiting for my whiplash injuries to heal enough to take up hapkido, mainly due to the rolling involved (not too good for neck, obviously).

The Muzenza Capoeira Group on Beaufort St in Mt Lawley have some awesome BJJ fighters, high quality teaching and heaps of experience. I'm not a fan of the gym layout though

Might be work looking into Michael Longman's classes. He does Japanese style Jujitsu with a good mix of fitness / padwork / sparring in Morley. Good classes because he includes a wide range of CQC tactics as well as throws and grappling - it's not quite as grappling orientated as the straight out Brazilian style Jujitsu though (good if you like a bit of variation and don't want to spend a couple of hours hugging sweaty blokes). Also does gradings and belts (optional) if your into that.

It doesnt look overly traditional, but not BJJ ground based aswell. Have you trained there? Traditional JuJitsu has no competitive side to it, only relfex training. Is there a sparing / competitive angle to it?

Valid point with regards to the word 'traditional' and I've edited it out of my post as it may not the correct way to describe Impact Jujitsu. I've been training there on Tuesdays a few weeks now. There is usually at least a couple of students who spend the whole lesson sparring, it depends on the curriculum for that night / what Michael has in mind for that session. Obviously it depends a lot on where the student is at and I'm still at the beginner stage so I spend a lot of time learning holds and running drills. If your interestred in taking some classes and would like to know more about content shoot Michael an e-mail impactjujitsu@iinet.net.au He's a top bloke who knows his stuff and you get your first couple of classes free :boink: I'm sure you'll find plenty of info on the interwebz about JuJitsu comps if your interested in the competitive side of things

he gave us just a taste of things, very practicle and it all made sense.
the escape from full guard was brilliant...my mate wants me to come roll with him @ his BJJ club and now im heading down just to employ this escape :)
expensive art thought...135 per month...im currently paying 66 and that includes a full gym set up @ Ninjukai Dojo...KFM would be 2 or 3 nights in a week - but god damn, im thinking about it

Well, since this has been bought back up. Is everyone still training / competing?
It has been awhile since, but all last year (my first year of competition) i competed in a Taekwondo red belt division @ 68-74kg (my weight in most comps ~73kg), every comp i entered i have scored medals.
1st comp i entered (another clubs open WTF comp) i won silver.
2nd comp was a ITF Club comp (not my cup of tea but its good practice and fun), i won bronze in point sparring and silver in continuous(after getting KO'd)
3rd comp was WTF State Championships where i scored my first gold with a score of 15 - 3.
4th comp was WTF National Championships over in Canberra which i finished with a bronze, only barely losing my 2nd fight.
Many more comps to enter this year with high hopes of progressing further and even more golds =)
Cheers,
Corey
