This is going to be awsum ,the same go's for Xbox 'natal'
looks alright, but this blows it out of the water in my opinion.

Yeah I was up til 5 watching E3 live the other night and cannot wait for further development on these! I was totally blown away and thought to myself how grateful I am to be alive in this day and age, to wintess some of the technology and games being put into production.
The only thing Wii has is it's motion sensitivity. Apart from that it's just a hyped up Game Cube with wireless controllers. Bah!
looks alright, but this blows it out of the water in my opinion.

Far out, both of those look awesome. I like the instant response of the PS3 system, but the full body recognition of the 360 is also intense.

Agreed. With the full-motion camera for the 360, that's pretty sweet. This has been a veeerrrry big goal to achieve, and finally we are here. Cannot wait for it to become more responsive and 'fluid' as time goes on and the product is refined :)
This week (thanks to E3) has been massive in the technology industry, absolutely massive, and I too am glad that we are all here to experience it grow today.
Bring it on!

so insane.
talk about the next level of gaming!

IMO the Natal shits all over the PS3 motion controllers. The 360 one picks up fingers etc seperately so anything you do is transmitted into the game. It may not be as responsive, that ps3 vid blew me away at how wuick to ract it is, but it seems very limited compared to Natal. Then again, it's ealry days for both, should be good to see them progress.

Meh! I'm pretty happy just playing with a controller.

yeah gaming for me is more like a lazy thing, like sitting on your arse watching a dvd - i dont really want to be jumping up and down like a muppet all the time in front of a screen, could go and kick a real ball if i wanted to do that
the tech behind it is really amazing though, must admit!

WOW...thats pretty fucking amazing. Would love to see how this would go with something like COD or MW2 etc.
I kinda prefer the PS3 version only due to it having something to use (ie: gun, sword etc)...would feel weird 'pretending' to hold a invisible gun etc.
Pav - you hit the nail on the head man, we are pretty fucking lucky to be around right now with all this cool stuff being developed.
Natal: Looks cool, but in my opinion has limited applications when it comes to games. Looks like it'll only be any good for apps where you're not actually holding anything and all you do is slap stuff with your hands and feet. ie martial arts fighting demo, soccer demo are OK. But the racing demo looked ridculous. Plus there seems to be quite a lot of input lag.
PS3 Motion: Easily the fastest and most accurate of the bunch and great for games where you're holding a tool. ie tennis racquet, gun, sword etc. But it's not going to be able to do the martial arts fighting demo or the soccer demo that Natal can. Probably going to be the most expensive of the lot too, seeing as you need two bluetooth motion controllers and the PS3 Eye camera to make it all work.
Wii Motion+: The new add-on seems to make quite a significant improvement to the current Wii controller. Not as accurate as the PS3 remote but at least they will be available next month with actual games that use them. It'll be 12 months at least before we see the other two offerings on the retail shelves.
BTW that 'Milo' Natal demo was a bunch of scripted shit. Doesn't actually work in real life and that's why it wasn't demo'd live. That bloke behind the tech demo (Peter Molyneux) has a history of talking shit up and not actually delivering. Plus the Voice Recognition = Microphone. There are already games using voice recognition through headset microphones or the old PS2 eye toy mic.
Yeah, while Natal looks awesome, it wasnt real like the PS3 demo... so im very skeptical.
Jumping around in front of a camera doesnt really do it for me, prefer the lazy spec controller and just sit on my ass. Looks like PS3 will sort of provide both options, sit on your ass and play or get up and thrash around like an epileptic
i guess it will be kind of like the Wii with the natal technology. only fun to play while drunk with friends.

As a biomechanist who works with 3D motion analysis software such as VICON, what Sony is doing with the PS3 motion is basically a lo-fi version of the motion capture systems being used in movies/animation at present - for example how Gollum was created for LOTR.
The glowing ball is just an active marker being tracked within a pre-defined 3D volume. What's interesting is that technically, for 3D mocap, you need at least 2 cameras/fields of view intersecting to give true measures of depth.
It wouldnt be much of a stretch to add a number of active markers, and then calibrate them, so that you can reconstruct limbs/joint segmements. I look at walking, and measure knee/ankle angles/velocities/forces, and use a set of 29 markers...but it wouldnt be hard to use a set of say 10 for gaming purposes. Even this setup would be overkill for games.

Imagine if Sony were to put out a "body kit", of say a vest, headband, shinpads, and arm guards - would all be to pre-measured and pre-calibrated dimensions, which the game developers can just base their character animation "meshes" on - and would allow for full-body movements during games.
The main trick is just having the processing power to feed the mocap realtime into the game, and animate over the top of it to suit the game's requirements. Which these days really shouldnt be an issue.
With regards to capturing finger movements etc, and more out of interest, it just depends on how accurately the camera/s can be calibrated, how many cameras you have, and how many markers you want to wear - our lab is investigating spin bowling, and recording finger movements on the ball. Also has a cello-playing study going on - plenty of stuff done analysing finger movemements in musicians.

PS neither of those pics are from our lab, btw - just did a quick google search for illustration purposes :)
a body suit will be the awsum ,but I dont want to rush it too much ,I am still exited with motion controller ,GT5 and metel gear solid 5

Perhaps that's why the glowing marker on the device is so large. The Sony Eye cam may simply track the size of the glowing ball within it's field of view to calculate the distance from the camera.

The Natal motion camera looks ridiculously unrealistic.. without any kind of tracking device on the person how on earth would they process any form of input? I don't have sound.. but from the looks of it I'd say it looks like a crazy pipe dream.
Plus.. how would it differentiate between people sitting next to each other in those scenarios and multi player/input. More importantly.. how would you pull off a 900 skateboarding..

yeah, I was thinking that. Which means it will lose accuracy with diagonal/rotational movements, or movements from kinda side-on. Obviously the bigger the marker, the less influential that error will be.
I think the single-camera issue will be its biggest limitation - will make accurate capture of full-body movements less accurate...though may still be good enough from a game point of view, not scientific measurement. The Natal demo would suggest it should still be useful enough for games.

the technology is based on a depth sensing camera (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-9831647-56.html), so natal certainly isn't a crazy pipe dream. journalist got a private go of it at E3 few weeks back. so it's a real working technology.

Search for other natal video's, like the painting one etc. Real live demo's not an ad for it. The way you hold your hand and the gestures you use affect the way you paint on this digital canvas, pretty cool stuff.
