Buy an Escort. Can get it new for less than a second hand STI and it will perform just as well, if not better.

Are you concerned about the potential detector ban?

Speaker / hardwire kit / mounting bracket will work with any late model Beltronics or Escort Detector (X50, RX65, STi, 950, 955, 995 etc).
Make sure that your mate gets a vertical bracket or it'll only be a matter of time before he comes off second best against a Multanova 6F.

Multinova 6F - Type of speed camera used in WA.

Vertical bracket - Instead of mounting your radar detector in the conventional position, it allows you to mount it on its side. By doing this, you are aligning the polarisation of the radar to the detector. In laymans terms, you are making the detector pick up the speed camera alot easier, therefore earlier.

Well said D1.

XR= Australian model but it is simply a rebadged STI. There is no difference in specification or performance.
The difference between them is literally a sticker on the top of the unit.
Some local suppliers claim that the XR is tuned for Oz but this is complete rubbish.

Not taking anything away from the XR, it's simply a locally purchased STI.

Are you concerned about the potential detector ban?

They've been saying that for ages though! What's the latest on it?

There are no vertical mounts available for Whistlers.
Which Whistler do u have?
Have you found that you've had enough time to 'adjust your speed' comfortably against speed cameras?

From my testing, Whistlers don't respond anywhere near as well to vertical mounting like the beltronics / escort units.

Regarding the detector ban, they have been saying it for ages but 'apparently' there are plans to put it to parliament in the next couple of months. The police chief is supposedly waiting for a road safety recommendation report that is due in July before the issue gets pursued further. Hopefully it never happens just like all the other times!

XR70 is a Beltronics Detector.
No whistler is undetectable.
You probably have a Whistler Pro 78 - they're a decent.

I've never seen anyone actually test the Whistler vertically mounted, does it offer any improvements at all? I know the x50s do very well vertically mounted. For that reason I can't decide between an x50 and the pro78, does the x50 give many false warnings vertically mounted?

Where have people got their detectors re-calibrated?
I've got a Pro-78 as well and would like to talk to some who knows about them to see whether the range can be extended at all.

I finally managed to properly test the Whistler Pro 78 mounted vertically.
And the difference is pretty damn big!!!
Default Settings = 80m warning
Optimal Settings = 150m warning
Optimal Settings + Mounted Vertically = 270m warning.

All mounted high on the windshield with multiple runs on each configuration for consistency. Will upload videos soon.

I'm not going to be doing anymore testing with the Pro 78 so if anyone wants to buy it, PM me.
It's new, revision C and has only been used for testing purposes. The detector was in plastic when used and all the cables are still in the packaging. Comes in box.

I've got a Pro-78 as well and would like to talk to some who knows about them to see whether the range can be extended at all.

To extend range do the following:
- Go into Menu and change all the settings to OFF except Ka (and K if you want). Put the detector in Filter mode. Make sure that POP, Voice + BSVR (battery saver) are OFF.
(to exit menu mode, press the power/volume button in --> go into menu again to make sure that the settings have been saved)

- Mount the detector vertically - black electrical tape does the trick for the time being and if you do it neatly, you can't even tell that it's a ghetto spec setup :D

- Recalibration = won't help unless your detector is out of tune and I highly doubt that it is.
