Every bullfighter's worst nightmare was realised this week when a Spanish matador felt the wrath of an enraged bull.

Israel Lancho is speared by the powerful animal's right horn and hoisted high into the air as thousands of shocked spectators look on.

He was rushed to emergency surgery to repair 25cm-deep stomach wound and remains in a "very serious" condition.

The bullfight was part of Madrid's annual San Isidro festival, honouring the city's patron saint.
