Good on him for finally sticking it to the morons. About time someone did, and I'm glad it's from someone who worked in such a position that he did.
Working in gov't myself, it's all too common that we see arrogant morons calling up 'demanding' that something be done, purely because we are the gov't, and it's about time someone 'defended' the gov't. We are human too!

Unfortunately majority of voting people are idiots. You don't want to insult someone if you hope they re-elect you haha.

Had he done so, the greater public would have ousted him immediately; at least now, being a Former minister, he has the ability to voice his opinion when the greater public will still (perhaps) listen to what he has to say.
Generally speaking, he had to be politically correct. Now that he's a "civilian" (per se), he can say what he wants (within reason).

If you're too dumb or idle to read the travel advisories and too mean to take out travel insurance when you go overseas then you ought to take responsibility for your own behaviour.
Sure, if there's a catastrophe like the Bali bombings or you're trapped in a corruption scam the government should try to help. But not if you're too lazy and silly to help yourself
love this :p
putting on my old man hat..... i watched the "howard years" on abc ages ago, and even tho he wasn't in office, you still get the feeling that politicians never really say what they fully think.... where as some of howards press agents etc, tell ya REALLY how it was, which was funny
but its good to see that downing is telling it like it is :p
Great article, the general public are retards.
I remember maybe 6 months ago or more he missed some meeting where the PM was speaking because he was having lunch...blah blah, I found a link.

An unrepentant Mr Downer told journalists that he had veal for his main and lemon, lime and bitters to drink.
"Regrets? About lunch? I enjoyed lunch," Mr Downer said as he arrived at Parliament House.
"On reflection I think I was better off having lunch with Greg Sheridan, the foreign editor of The Australian, than I was listening to Julia Gillard's ranting and raging and party political point-scoring."
tops.

Hit the nail right on the head there, all were really doing is giving us a bad reputation to people in other countries wholl think that we think were better than everyone else.
Which alot of us do

I live in SE Asia, have done for years. Unfortunately from time to time I get Australian tourists coming to my shop, located in Viet Nam, abusing staff because either their English is not good enough ( in Vietnam they speak, er, Vietnamese...), or moaning that some products are cheaper in Aus than Vietnam (I sell Australian produce, which has to travel a large distance and has high local tax as import) is endemic. These clowns I now simply throw out of the shop, admittedly with some quiet enjoyment. I may lose a sale but I keep the integrity to my staff, who are more important to me than rude tourists. You wankers (you know who you are) seem to forget you are guests when in other countries, so wake up to yourselves. Honestly, some people do not deserve passports. Australians have a terrible reputation as tourists sadly, and that reflects adversely on the majority of Aussies I come across who do behave with respect.
