Anyone good with putting a new disc drive in them?

My brothers played bulk dvd's on it and now it doesn't read 360 games anymore.
I'm guessing a swap of the drive would fix it?
I remember there used to be a guy on here always wanting wrecked xbox's and that to use, anyone remember who he was?

Cheers.

I think it was "NIVA" who was messing around with them

The problem is the Laser, I have had 2-3 go already. You can't just swap the drive because it is mated to your xbox's motherboard. You have 2 options.

First you can look up on google and hack the DVDroms firmware to copy the key from your old Drive to a new one. You also need to make sure that the drive you buy is the EXACT same type drive that came from your xbox. There are 2 or 3 differant drives used, a Samsung a Hitachi and Im not sure but there might be another.
To swap the key you will need a pc with sata capabilities to plug your drive into the pc and use the xbox to boot it. There are several guides on the net.

The other option which is by far the easiest is to buy another laser. Either find someone throwing away a RROD xbox like I do and hope it has the same drive as you or pull out the dvdrom pull it apart and get the laser and on the laser is a code (like HD63, HD67 or something like that) you need to get a replacement laser that is the same.

As for red ring of death look up the teatowel or hand towel trick on google.

I wouldn't be able to take it to a modshop to get this done?

I'm useless at electrics

There is a guy on Hay Street who sells replacement drives, as long as you swap over the boards inside the drives you can change out an old drive with a new one. Just make sure you get the same brand drive that you already have in there.

Pretty certain Microsoft cover this out of warranty? This has been mentioned in 2 other xbox related threads also.

I thought those only went for 3 years after date of purchase then you're shit out of luck after that.

Just try ringing them and dont mention you thought it was out of date or anything and see if they say anything. Its there faulty system and the rrod is caused by no fault of the user, its a manufacturing fault.

Yeah everyone that gets red rings you've got an unlimited warranty even if you don't have a receipt!

Try unplugging all the cables from the back and plugging them back in. If they get knocked you get a Red Ring aswell.

The only issue with the RROD warrantly is it has to happen 100% of the time. If it doesn't happen when there tech's have it then they will charge you for the repair or the shipping cost to get it back.
I gave up and picked up a new Arcade model for cheap which has HDMI out and an updated motherboard and dvd drive.

Arcade model 360's with HDMI output(altho all come with HDMI output now) are $250 at good guys. Cheap as fuck if you get RROD or brick 360 and cant be fucked sending them off to microsoft.
