This starts today in the little inbreeding capital of Australia.

For anyone who takes even a passing interest in the scene will know that one of antilags own, Steve Jones, is tackling the event in his R35 GTR after becoming the youngest winner of Targa West last year. He is over with a few antilag members in tow - Anthony Yoda Scali, B0BB0, Rhys and Richard aka addicted to speed.

So firstly, im sure we all wish him the best of luck, and secondly, lets use this thread to update results etc as they come to hand.

With snow forecast, its going to be an exciting week!

there are regs, but those cars are FAR from stock.. and before anybody says the big jonesy mobile is stock.. it aint lol

go go go! thats a damn good result thus far. that sti would have to be piloted by lunatics and be a super dakker to be coming 6th against the superlegerras

its snowing here, but only up in the mountains. its forecast for snow at anything over 700m altitude. -1 tonight but clean night so no more snow for a few days at least. weather forecast is getting better.cold but not as much as was forcast earlier

rhys is a mad pingpingpingping for going up that road at night, it was pretty bad in the day, huge drops slippery as fuck.

steves car as it did at targa west doesn't sound or look that fast, but the result are unreal. the prologue stage would have suited the porsches, it was a pretty tight course.

the turbo rx8 failed, no boost. both lambos look/sound unreal

Timing has been all fucked up on the Targa site.

Steve apparently 4th as of an hour ago.

Denver
29-04-2009, 01:54 PM
more results are up, hes currently second, 2 seconds behind the whites lambo..

however, 16 seconds seperates the top ten

and thats after 6 stages, could be a tight weekend if the competition stays like that

Paul Summers has retired.

not sure on names yet but the red/orange evo x had a pretty big stack on the last stage. it had gone clean through on some of the plastic safety barriers and into a tree.

times have been fucked up all day. running order of the cars on the 9th stage was all over the show as well so its hard to tell who's where. didn't see tony longhurst on last stage either

after stage 7 steve was 4th from the officals we asked, 4 seconds behind quinn overall. richards and white 2seconds behind quinn

Denver
29-04-2009, 03:06 PM
just looking at the live feed on the targa site, paul summers has a dud battery, im guessing he'll be back tomorrow if thats all it is, unless its a dud battery with a conrod stuck in the side of it a la ferrari

is also reporting stevo as 4th..

1. Quinn +26s, 2. Whites +32s, 3. Richards +34, 4. Jones +39s

The big clunka is going alright, 13s off the pace, but its only day 1 of 5.

the roads over here are mental, make all the "good" perth runs look like tracks for kids, here ever road is crazy.

I'd go as far as saying the cradle moutain stages would shit on a lap of the nurburgring. We thrashed rental around there the other day and its truely insane!

FranZ

Big call! When I drove around Cradle Mtn I thought it was good; but it had nothing compared to St Mary's and Elephants Pass on the East Coast!

Docile
30-04-2009, 04:56 AM
Yer big call for sure! Just looking at the map, the cethana stage is 37kms long! I don't think we've come across elephant pass on our travels?

Its definitely a pingpingpingping to try and get to as many of the stages to watch though which makes it bit hard! Launceston drivers seem to be a patient bunch who tend to stay left too! Much better than those in perth

Steve won the first stage this morning

the whites are cranking currently...

quote from Targa Live

Steve Jones: "We're doing pretty good. The roads today are very bumpy compared to what I'm used to in WA, particularly in the middle of the corners. The car is just a little bit too low, we just need to adjust the suspension bit and make it suit the bumpier conditions in Tasmania. We're just trying to keep on the road at moment, as there's still a long way to go. I'm still getting used to it all. I'm happy with where I am and knew the front runners would go quickly, but I can't let them get away too much if I want to stay in contention. Because this is my first Targa a lot of it is unknown and I don't know what to expect next."

Good to know there will be more in the car once sorted.

Remember every other leader has played Targa Tas before... hes doing exceptionally well.

Was having a chat to mate that works for fabcar/autowholesale in cannington and he said that steve is running 19" wheels with r-spec tyres. He'll be down on top speed but geez that thing will get going in a hurry (or more correctly more of a hurry than usual). Look out the Tony & co. once he gets a feel for the roads & setup this could get really interesting from a wa point of view.

Its now wet for the compeditors as of the start today, may clear, and this just came through

Dean Herridge's Subaru Impreza WRX has had a full engine rebuild overnight, and was not put back into parc ferme until 1am this morning. Dean reports that the car was pumping oil out yesterday, and he believed it was a piston problem. The car is going again and the West Australian hopes that all will be okay. He's hoping for rain, and lots of it, because his medium compound tyres have taken a beating in the dry conditions and are looking a bit second-hand.

We've just spoken to Tony, who tells us that he's cracked a radiator and is out of the event. What bad news for the Donut King Nissan GTR.

12:33pm - "Any news on the Hi Octane GTR of Newman/Murphy, can't see them on stage 20 results." Nathan from Sydney.

Nathan, they stopped 2km into TS20, and are now moving slowly out of the stage. It appears they have had mechanical issues.

The third day of the 18th Targa Tasmania started with wet roads for the first time this year, but the overnight rain quickly dissipated and clear skies prevailed for much of the day.

With his slight engine problems from yesterday all sorted, Kevin Weeks was the early mover, winning the opening stage and reducing the gap to overnight leader Tony Quinn. But it was the drama among the other event favourites that was creating all the interest.

Western Australian Steve Jones, the winner of last year’s Targa West, was lying fourth in his Nissan GTR until he crashed heavily on the Stoodley test. Co-driver Ruari Soutar-Dawson was uninjured, but Jones was taken to Launceston General Hospital for observation with back pain.

Two stages later, Jim Richards shocked onlookers when he hit a bank on the Paloona stage, damaging his Porsche’s radiator beyond repair and retiring from the event for the first time.

"We hit a bank on a little second gear corner and broke the radiator,” Richards explained. “The radiator's right at the front of the Porsche, so unfortunately we just rolled down the road and parked it an SOS point and waited for the truck to arrive to pick it up.

"These things happen, and they happen to other drivers. It's just a consequence of going in a rally; every now and then you make a little blue and hit something, I suppose."

"I turned into the corner in second gear, got to the middle of the corner and the car understeered off on all the gravel and mud that was on the road. But hey, 200 other cars got around the corner without hitting the bank, so I was obviously going a fraction too fast,” a philosophical Richards added.

"There's no excuses. The fact is that we hit the bank and no-one else did."

anyone know if any major tv station has the rights to it, and will be airing it?Southern Cross is a Targa Tas sponsor, they're affiliated with Channel 10 (like GWN is with 7) so it should show up on One hopefully.

Nice to see a 32 gtst doing well in the mix, even if he did nearly take out a photographer

"Kevin Weeks and Bec Crunkhorn, who crashed their Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera (#991) during the second stage of Targa Tasmania this morning, have been airlifted to Hobart General Hospital.

Bec Crunkhorn has been taken to the hospital for a check-up and further observation.

Kevin Weeks has been taken to hospital for further treatment of a chest injury.

Both were in good spirits when loaded on to the helicopter."

Epic drama this year.

Looks like Quinn has taken it by 6 minutes.

Shame to see such nice cars forced out at Targa the way they have been, although cars are replaceable people aren't and luckily everyone is still relatively ok.

If they don't want to show pics, then thats fine, after all its his car he can do as he pleases.

But like mentioned above, i don't think theres any harm in showing a few snaps. Everyone here enjoys motorsports and when a car like the r35 gtr comes off i think everyone would appreciate some pictures. It will always create interest.

Yeah dont make us wait till the Targa footage on TV to see it !!

If its the same show that aired in Tasmania this week (presented in 2 parts with Samantha Stevens) then you wont see it. In fact you'll only hear about Quinn, Weeks, Whites and Richards. Steve got a bit of a mention when he was in 5th place though. Nothing about stage wins or anything

Showed a few crashes (inc lambo) but none from the last stage going in to Strahan. Few serious crashes there and the last day didnt end up as planned for a few teams...

When we drove past the lambo, you could hear what sounded like the jaws of life and 2 blue tarps blocking off the view to the area. Not exactly a pleasant sight. Undecided about use of tarps in that crash (because 5min back up the road there was a Ferrari deep in the bushes, an old BMW against guard rails and a car on its lid..). Can see how the rescue guys want to do their job in private but its something you might expect to see at a fatality

Last time i checked Targa Tasmania wasn't conducted on a closed private track. It was a public event. I don't see why pictures of a Jones' wrecked 35gtr is such a big issue.

TJ
04-05-2009, 10:08 PM
Yeah, but neither is he under obligation to publish them.

If someone took pics, and they get online, then so be it, if not, then not much we can do about it right?

Anyhow, from Dean Herridge's co-driver

I just arrived back home from Targa and thought I would give a quick event report.

We made the call the night before prologue to run on Mediums for the event as the long range weather forecast was predicting at least three days of rain. We figured that our STI was never going to be a match for the super cars in the dry so by choosing Mediums it would give us the best advantage when it rained.

We were 6th fastest in prologue, which worked quite well for us as it meant we were seeded around the fast boys and wouldn't have to overtake too many slower cars. Day 1 is pretty much a warm up, with easy base times. It's meant to give you a chance to get used to your car without the pressure of worrying about penalty times. That didn't stop 29 cars going out on the first day though! I've never seen so many wood ducks on the side of the road in a rally before, especially since the conditions were dry.

Day 2 headed out to the East Coast with some very cool stages like The Sideling, Elephant Saddle, and Weldborough Pass. At the end of The Sideling we found that our engine was starting to breathe a little heavy, with oil starting to come out of the breather hose. It didn't slow us too much but the oil consumption was getting worse. We made it back to Launceston in 6th place and the boys stripped the engine and found a cracked ring land. They rebuilt it with a new set of rings and pistons, and got us back in the rally without any penalties.

The rear tyres took a bit of a battering over day 2 and 3, maybe made worse because of the oil from breather hose. Unfortunately the rain didn't come early enough for us, and we were forced to take two new tyres midway through day four. You get a two minute penalty for every new tyre you take, so we copped four minutes and dropped back to 13th.

It started to rain late on day 4, and we had a really good run over Hellyer Gorge, Rosebery, and Rinadeena. We managed to move back up to 7th by the time we reached the overnight stop in Strahan.

The roads were wet on the morning of Day Five so we went on a charge to try and peg back a few places. We managed a third fastest stage time over the Strahan stage and pegged back 1:14 on Matt Close in 6th place.

The Queenstown stage was really slippy and greasy too. We were on a quick run when we came across Weeks' crashed Lambo and had to stop. The organisers gave us a derived time, but it was only 8 sec faster than Close. We felt that we would have taken more than that out of him, but that's the way the cards fall sometime.

Mt Arrowsmith is an awesome stage at just under 50 km long. It was classified as wet but wasn't all that slippery. The last two stages were run in the dry, so as it turned out we ended up in 6th place just 2 seconds behind Matt Close for 5th. Bugger!!

Amen ... I don't know when Antilag turned into a bunch of political correct girls ? cos its Steve ?

If it was somone else would be posted everywhere by now .... with or without there consent.

So lets post up some pics and have a gauk at the damaged GTR.

Steve's a top dude and can take it like the rest. Normal AL standards are to hunt down pics like blood hounds. So i see no surpise in people asking to see them.

On a side note I do wish him the best in his recovery. He is an awesome driver and it would be great to see his career progress.

well first of all the crash sounds like it was on a stage in the middle of nowhere so there's probably not too many pics to speak of, targa tas is popular but not popular enough to have a camera on every inch of the rally, and more to the point, it's bloody tasmania, it's not like he'd be known over there like he is here, he'd just be another bloke going off the track. sounds like steve went straight to hospital and anybody else involved with his targa effort was probably following suit to make sure he was ok so taking pics of the car was probably the last thing on his and their minds.

there's been plenty of crashes from people on here that haven't even cracked a mention let alone pics getting out in the open. if there's pics to be had then i'm sure they'll be out in good time but i'd imagine they're more focussed on steve's recovery first and rebuilding the car second. pics for internetland would be a long way down the list.

has anyone heard how he's doing recently?

RICEY

Some crashes are kept low profile for insurance reasons, this doesnt apply in this situation. Of course Steves wellbeing is everyones first concern but its only human nature to want to see pics of the damage.

The first thing i learnt in motorsport is if you bin your rally car on a tarmac stage you immediatly take all stickers/sponsors stickers off. So you dont give the organisers or your sponsors the wrong publicity and image.

Personal reasons aside, i believe this may have something to do with it.

Hope steve recovers well, and can continue on with another vehicle in the future.

mys1
06-05-2009, 09:19 AM
It is quite often in the race brief that should anythign happen event stickers are to be removed and photos are to be discouraged so as not to bring the event a bad name.

Penaltys can apply for deliberatley breaking event rules, ie exclusion form future events.

At the end of the day if the woner has photos and doesnt want to publish them thats the owners issue. We all know what a crashed car looks like. Even what a crashed GTR looks like!
