Who here is into RC cars??

I've owned at least 40 different RC cars, in various stages of build and tune, including 3 different RC drift cars. You could say I'm obsessed with RC cars ;)

At the moment I have 2 cars.

The first is a Kyosho V-One RR Evolution on road nitro touring car.

It has 1.6HP, weighs 1680 grams, and does 43,000rpm. Good for about 120km/h, and it will get there quicker than your average Ferrari 360 Modena takes to get to 100km/h! :boink:

Here are some pics of my Kyosho, minus wheels and shell, after a fresh rebuild.

http://users.tpg.com.au/balistc/rr6.jpg

I've spent way too much on it, as witnessed by all the carbon fibre and billet aluminium.....the money I've spent on it, could have bought me a nice turbo, gate and injectors for my car :P

I've also got a HPI Savage SS 1/8 scale monster truck, with a range of mods...it has an airbrushed orange Hummer H2 shell, with black rims and paddle tyres, and a stock motor which is about to get some porting. It should be punching out about 2.8HP after porting, and as it is now, it pulls wheelies all day long. All it needs is a set of miniature gun racks and it'll look like a real full size Tennessee redneck cruiser :)

Does anyone here drift their RC cars? RC Drifting is getting huge now, and for those who havent seen it before, here is a vid from Singapore.

http://www.frequency-rc.com/drift/sg3rd.mpg

I used to have 3 drift cars, but then the speed of on-road cars got too tempting, and I had to sell them to afford more mods.

i just got into RC cars. Ive got a Tamiya TGS, nothing special.. i put a force .15 engine in it, tuned pipe / port matched manifold, high speed gears, adjustable shocks, some foamy tires, and a lot of traction problems... it sucks coz ive bought about all the upgrades possible for this car.. i wish i researched more into it before i spend all my $$$

But its still good fun... does some wicked flips when you push it too hard round a corner :D:D:D

i used to be back in my younger days...now not so much but i liek to thrash em around about.

got a kyosho inferno tr-15, sum minor mods, new exhaust mainfold, all bushins changed to bearings, fuel filter and a couple of other small things.

one of the drifter ones would be mad...but saving for a proper car is more important.

haha the only reason i got one was because i managed to angle grind my hand which meant i couldnt drive and i got really depressed. so the G/F took me to a hobby shop to find a car i could drive... that was 7 weeks ago.. i can drive again, but still spend the $$$ on the toy car too :D

-James

P.S. I highly recommend NOT angle grinding your hand... its not fun :(

Joe

I'll tell ya, it gets super expensive...but its so fun ;)

I never buy cars new anymore, I always buy them 2nd hand and fix them...it works out cheaper in most cases, because many of the cars dont need a huge amount of fixing, just a clean up and a tear down and rebuild!

i think your either right into rc cars or ya not. most people buy one cause they want one then find out you have to tune it and spend money on replacement parts and it ends up being locked away in ya cupboard forever.

i particularly love 1/8th Nitro Offroad buggies (used to race in a club at burswood on sundays but now the supra hogs the funds)

Ive always had rc cars, my current one is a Ultra MBX with a O/S VZ-B (2.45HP) running 20% nitro. spent about 3k all up on the bastard.
i love nothing more than to pull it apart, modify it and thrash its nuts off. theres so many contributing factors to what i like about the hobby. love the smell of methanol, i can let the car idle and listen to it all day, sounds like a off its neck PP rotar.

anyhoo im keen for a meet sometime i think it would be fun, big open well lit carpark sounds good, ill just have to run some slicks.

heres a half ass's page i did on it, so out of date and unfinished its not funny but there are some pics if it down the bottom.

Joe

Love the MBXs...I had an Ultra GT 1/8 and a Kyosho Inferno 1/8, but I sold them.

1/8s are so fast its unbelievable.......in many cases they are faster than on-road cars!

well the motor cost $400 (medium price for a performance motor) and like i said it is 2.45 hp @ 52,000rpm. ive yet to clock its speed but im confident it will push 100kph. last motor i had in it was a $200 jobbie and we got a speed reading from the car by me hanging out of my X's escort while she drove behind it. even that thing did 85kph. (the rc car not the escort :P )

I think you'll find its more like 32,000rpm....those O.S. motors dont rev that high, but they sure make a lot of torque!!

Mofo
20-01-2005, 07:48 PM
i hit 5 instead of 4.
Practical rpm: 3,000-40,000
Power Output: 2.45 hp @ 32,000 rpm

Joe
21-01-2005, 08:28 AM
I bet 90% of that power is made at 10,000rpm too, kind of like a grunty V8, but in the form of an RC motor :)

Its the kind of motor that will strip the shit out of the spur gears ;)

Mofo
21-01-2005, 09:10 PM
its only a .21ci (3.5cc) so no its def not a torque monster, very progressive.

the big block 2.5/6/7/8/'s are the torquey motors that dont like to rev as much.

mine has a metal ring gears, come to think of it they are original ones too.

practical rpm being 40k means its making top hp at 40k. keep revving and it loses power.

Dim
21-01-2005, 11:04 PM
who was the chap driving the turbo 4dr r31 picking up their drift car at stanbridges today???

and where abouts is this belmont race course..??

Mofo
21-01-2005, 11:38 PM
ill let someone else explain how to get there, but its off the graham farmer freeway.

as your comming into perth from the south, its the big ass carpark on the right hand side, cant really miss it, or the exit.

O.S. motors are known for being torque monsters......I had a CV-R .15 in my Tamiya TG10R, and it used to strip the teeth right off the spur gears :)

40k rpm is unloaded rpm, IE, the motor free revving with no load. Under load, it'll probably be about 5-7k rpm less.

Mofo
25-01-2005, 10:29 PM
ah it was a pretty cool little meet, not a bad venue for drifters but my buggy got bored big time and i just couldnt drift like the others no matter how hard i try. i spent most of the time tuning my mates Team Losi LST truck, which gained quite a bit of attention from other drivers and even some slack jawed locals.
had a few drags with the drifters too, i remain undefeated in the scale 1/4mile battle.
some nice riced up drift rc's there too with neons and wot not.

might bring some jumps next time.

I've raced 1/8s before, and they hang with my car til I hit 2nd gear. Over the scale 1/4, I'd say it would be pretty close, but if you race from one side of the lot to the other, i'll wait for u at the end ;)

yeah that steering shit gotta suck, take it to a hobby shop they will sort it out.

yeah hex pattern hub but i have no doubt it a different size.

my wheels are like plastic kevlar maybe i can just pop tyres off and try that, car is probably too heavy to drift.

This thread reminds me of a story...

About 2 years ago, I was driving past the boat ramp carpark in Hillaries Boat Harbour. At the time, it was a nice big new open tarmac with no kerbs or anything. So I decided to go for a ride through this new carpark. I drive through it, enjoying the freedom of having a large open tarmac with nothing to hit (wasn't speeding or nothing, just swerving slightly from side to side). Then all of a sudden out of nowhere, I see this black lump in front of me on the tarmac. I hit the brakes and manage to turn the car so this thing goes under my car (as opposed to the wheels)...except this thing doesn't fit under my lowered car. There is a large "CRUNCH!", and I immediately whack my Fiat into reverse, and go back. I get out and inspect this mysterious black lump. It is (or rather was) a petrol powered RC car. I'm like what the hell?!? Then this guy and his mates comes running over from the other side of the carpark (I was no where near them when I was driving). The guy's like "You destroyed my car!!!" I'm like "I didn't see it! It's a black car on black tarmac!" The car was damaged, but wasn't obliterated. The top of the motor was broken, the fuel tank was cracked, and other bits of plastic were snapped off. Anyways, we exchanged details and I went home and told my dad what happened. My dad's like "You're not paying for any of it. He shouldn't have been playing with it in a carpark!" Which is true. I told this guy what my dad had said. He wasn't happy of course, so he rang my dad and they had a huge talk. He later called the police to ask about his rights etc. But after much deliberating, he discovered he had no grounds to stand on, and accepted that I had no obligation to pay for any of it. But being the nice (or weak) person that I am, I told him I'd go halves in the repair bill (total bill was $360). So I went halves, and his car is now repaired, albeit with a bigger motor than the one he had before.

On a separate note, my dad and I have our own petrol RC car we purchased from Singapore a few years ago. Only used it 3 or 4 times ever though...I'll post some pics of it soon!

I have had RC cars for YEARS. I remmeber getting my First kit from my uncle which was a Tamiya Hornet. about 16years ago that was. Then like about 7 years later I bought a Super Hornet. Spent loads of money.

Then about 5 years ago I got into 1/10 Nitro buggies. I had a Kyosho Inferno MP6 which I competitively race for a while. I rekon I spent over 3 and 1/2 grand in about 2 years on it and it was heaps for like a year 8 student with no job.

Ive got back into it again and looked into drift cars and found that the TT01 Tamiya chassis was good for drifting.Ive done All suspension mods, upper arm kit, tie rod kit, futaba ESC, Tamiya TZ 23 turn motor (good at sitting on the high revs),A trinity 11 turn motor ,Tamiya Hard and medium hard springs,4 sets of wheels (Volk TE37s gunmetal grays, SSR style Deep dish Mesh wheels, Yokohama model 7s and some mad White Prolines. My current body is a S15 silvia painted in a transclusent Hot purple. It has some nice camber dialed in for the authentic look and it handles just as well. I also Have a NSX shell and some insane Slicks which I use for circuit racing.

I have a few sets of Yokomo Drift tyres, the professional ones, not the ones with the plastic rings. Way better than PVC as well. The car drifts so crazyily that I cant even believe it. I take it to a track and the guys are like what the hell how does it do that. Also with the tyres u can get impressive high speed drifts happening unlike slow stuff on PVC.

Ill get some Pics up soon. These things are so much fun, over here they organise little drift comps at the tracks and it really has to be seen to be beleived at how realistic these cars handle and look!!

Ive seen some insane Electrics and beleive me, the speed of some has to be seen to be beleived. The cost of RCs have come down a LOT nowadays, and even though ive spent so much its still good.

This coming moday(07-03-05) 11am at the belmont park racecourse come down to do some RC drift with us, its a public holiday so we should have a great turnout.

That shop in Willetton (I think its called Discount Hobbies) is awesome....good guys there and fairly well priced.

Stanbridges are a bit overpriced, and if you want a decent shop NOR, best place to go is Perth RC on the corner of Newcastle and Charles St.....Sam is the guy to speak to there and he knows his shit.

Once I finish it, I'll post a pic of whats underneath.......namely, a 3 Racing carbon fibre chassis, shock towers, suspension and hinge pin braces, upper deck and titanium hinge pins, and a Mamba brushless Competition motor and ESC....its also getting another shell, modified to accomodate an 8 cell pack...the extra cells wont fit under a stock shell!

 Friday i put it all together after a full service and i was all ready for monday, then i gave it a little run to see if my camber and and suspension settings where up to scratch i was hooning up my drive way full blast and cliped my limestone step, then i tryed to turn it and it locked on one way and wouldent turn the other way......same thing happend not long ago, its a small plastic piece that spins the thing that spins the other thing that moves the wheels (im not very tecnical with my words as you can see).

anyway im very pissed all the hoby shops are closed so i wont be able to get it ready, o well next one for sure.

They are hard to maintain if you dont know what your doing, and most people get tired of them and put them away in a drawer or on a shelf and never touch them again.. :P

Mad--GTI, turn on the macro mode on your camera and you will get lots better photos. Although they might be phone pics in which case it's tricky!

Out of interest whats the sort of cost you are looking at to get a basic RC drift car?

Shauno

Been playing with rc drift cars for almost 2 years now
Had 3 different drifters.

First was a Tamiya TT-01, I'd personally suggest anyone willing to start RC drifting start with one of these. Easiest things to learn with, and real easy to build into a drift, just lock the diffs, upgrade the motor, and you're sliding.

Second was a Team Associated Tc3- 12t Motor, and everything chassis upgrade you could think of. It was mental. So hard to control with drift wheels on though...

Third and my current, is a Tamiya TRF-415 Special.
Currently running an 11t Motor, front and centre one way diffs, and nearly every possibly upgrade you can get for it available. It's insane with the diffs, come off the throttle and it skids the backend like a hand brake. Thinking about downgrading to a 15t/16t motor.

I'm also a member of http://www.ausdrift.net these guys are awesome. Run a few drift comps through-out the year and also heaps of knowledge and help from everyone.

My best shell i've done is this baby...
