Hi all,

I'm starting to get tired of babysitting 'mechanics' at my current place of employment. Currently i cannot give any EFI diagnostic task, or any job remotely challenging to any of the employees here. I have to take the task on, which is making my workload unbearable at the moment. Further to that, the attitude of the owner is making my drive to excel vanish. I have hit a brick wall, in a sense of I'm trying to make the business grow and succeed and all I'm met with is 'cant be bothered'

What i do-
Currently I'm a workshop controller of a 7 hoist 7 Employee 'medium sized' business. I take care of customer liaison, job costings, parts, stock, and at the moment all EFi and Electrical diagnosis and repair. I have taken on a senior workshop role, providing technical advice to mechanics on the floor and diagnosing issues with vehicles on road tests.

My qualities -
I understand any areas of mechanics, i am fluent in all aspects of fuel injection and electrical diagnosis. I can undertake just about any task given to me. I am reliable, have never taken a sick day in 4 or so years. And id say my biggest quality is my work ethic, I'm the first one at work, and the last one to leave, and give 100% all day every day without fail.

Im not chasing big money, something reasonable would be fine. I currently do approximately 50-55 hours a week and have no problem continuing this at a new position.

If you have anything, or know of anyone looking for someone that 'knows what they are doing', then please dont hestitate to call.

Cheers

Josh

I hear you about "babystiitng" mechanics but unfortunately thats where the trade is heading.
Feel like i could walk into a job at ABC childcare centre and know my way around on the first day.
It gets really tiring after a while.

Yeah, i can understand some things might be beyond them.

But EA falcon with no spark isnt exactly hard, this is the level im talking about

Had a beer with the big man on tues night and expressed my concerns of how im feeling. He understood, and Wednesday he did the things i asked (took on a couple of jobs, got the boys more involved). But thursday it was back to usual, workload unbearable.

So, still looking

Cheers

Scary times to be opening doors with no client base, you would want to have a lot of cash saved because building a business in these times is going to cost a lot of cash. Your advertising budget would be huge.

Id love to take what i do out of work to the next level, but its a big leap.

hmmm well it was a more a thought of buying a already setup business and then obviously using the ties I already have in perth and not being a mechanic by trade would look at sourcing 2 or 3 mechanics which would then bring more business - more clients ect..

Definately just a thought but it has been there for many years! A great opportunity is yet to come up though!

Do your research and keep a look out for businesses for sale.... you never know u might find one with a nice size customer base you can build from and expand into the areas you want to go towards.

Contact business brokers in your area and tell them what your on the lookout for and also find a good accountant.

Also go to your local small business center and see what they have to offer... there is alot of help out there and money from the government too.

You will never know if you dont take the leap

The leap is not because i cant as a business person. Thats not the issue, the stuff i do out of work i want to get better at before i take it pro. I hate dodgey work and half assed jobs so id like to work on my bare bones fabrication a bit more before i step out and say that i can do it.

I dont want to start or purchase a business, yet. Im happy to contribute to someones in the best way i can (ie my involvement in current business has resulted in turnover and profits nearly doubling, by streamlining and my customer service skills).

Volatile Rob, i was going to come and see you actually and see if you wanted any after hours/weekend help. Im itchy to work on tools as i dont do it every day anymore.

Cheers for responses and thoughts

Josh
