Hey guys,
Been on forums for years, some of you may know me I don't go out on to many cruises but that is soon to change coz never had anything worth going in, am on double or nothing and seem to get fucking raped by Police everytime i get into a decent car...
I wanted to put the showcase in when stage 2 was done but I need some advice and am just way to excited of the thought of doing one ( burnout ) within a month!
Now this is my 4th torana and hopefully my last... ( meaning I wont sell it ever!! ) It is a LH 1974 Sedan no special numbers or what not as Ive had SLR5000's SS Hatches ect and everytime I put the thing on a trailer to take it somewhere some prick offers me lots of money and I sell it.
Now onto the Car. I flew over to Queensland to a Pick up a Torana I bought off EBAY which was $15k with a Rebuilt 350 chev, Ford 4 spd Top Loader, 9 inch and supposed new paint and interior... It was the car I wasn't going to have to work on and just enjoy... But alas, I am a pretty anal when it comes to shit looking good and going good... i don't mind it being half arsed or done cheaper as long as it gets the job done as its only the first couple stages of its life. Pics as she was at the start.

Will add pics of engine bay and interior when I get home.. at work, but it was ur typical shit everywhere painted silver crusty crap...
I drove it for 2 days and decided it needed a make over.. after all the rust falling out of the doors, none of the dash working, wiring shorting, brakes shitty, all in all It needed a new lease on life.
Stage 1
So I decided to stick with the driveline and just add new manifold and carby to the engine... whole car was stripped.. interior, dash, engine bay, bar the block and heads, diff and gbox and wheels/suspension. So the car was sent to to Dave cleary who poked at it with a hot stick and rubbed back with a soft hand and given a coat of some beautiful Purple i have no idea what it was and a deep look with chrome flake all over. ( only visible in sun ) - ( also thanks to the muppet who yelled out nice paint job, it looks like you used my mrs nail poish at Motorvation... ) The materials alone cost clost to $5k. He cut out and welded all the engine bay so its smooth and welded up all the holes and all the rust.
I then decided I wanted everything to be bright Shiny chrome. It was always going to be Hollywood and a muscle car, what else would you have it? Rocket Covers, manifold, Carby and air cleaner all came brand new from Edelbrock and were fitted. Everything else was rebuilt, chromed and fitted. ( Brake Booster, Master Cylinder, Prop, Window wiper motor, Bonnet Catch / Latch, Bonnet Hinges and a Custom Aussie Dessert Cooler Burnout King Radiator with twin thermos was fitted into the front.
All panel bolts were replaced and refitted with nice stainless Allen head bolts and the Dash Custome made Stainless with autometer Guages. Finally it got a quick once over from Malaga Trimmers in all black. With a Purple Chev badge in the centre of the seats.
Front brakes were upgraded to 330 mm rotors and aftermarket PBR Ford AU XR8 Calipers with Green Stuff pads and Billet Adaptors fitted to allow For the Starcorp 18's with stretched look tyres that i think totally finishes off the car in what I wanted! This may not be everyoens cup of tea but i love it and there is much more changes to come!!! This was stage one...
Pics at end of stage 1...

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh171/Dufusperth/th_26thMarchKwinanaBurnout_NEW.jpg (http://s256.photobucket.com/albums/hh171/Dufusperth/?action=view¤t=26thMarchKwinanaBurnout_NEW.flv)
It did 2 skids at Kwinana and a quiet entry at Motorvation, never ran quicker than a 13 coz the fucking cable clutch was shit and eventually the stock 350 threw some push rods as the valves were clapped out... I pulled it out and sent it for a full rebuild with engine specs still to come.. Pretty much you can see where its going.. Lowered compression, ready for boost. Its not a Show car. I want to enjoy it and hammer it like its meant to be hammered. After going the alcy race 8/71 injected $30k + route i opted to try and keep the car in budget as I have and save money as I build it.
The motor with lowered comp and new Turbo 400 with Race Gears and Fully manualized with 3500 Stall will go in as it is then it will get regoed and worn in... Once it is all legal, i will be dropping it @ Sanders Racing where Lee will do his magic pipe work for my Single Turbo setup to pull big HP through a Blow Through Carby setup. this is a cheaper option and after doing a lot of research it is doable and can be very reliable.
Will keep this updated as shit falls into place. At this time the motor is getting finished, the gbox is on its way over from NSW the Exhaust Headers / Extractors are getting fixed up I still need to get someone to look at my steering column as it is very loose and shitty. ( does anyone know who does this kind of work? )
I will look at suspension and rear brake upgrades in future but I am like most and do not want to owe any money on the car and am buildinig it with Cash money I get from the man.
Be keen to hear some peoples thoughts but in the end it's my car and i built it to suit me and obviously to do one...
Im Dave btw! Hows it going...

im good dave and so is your car top work

30-03-2009, 02:59 PM
Noice :)
Car looks very tough - good work. Not many tidy Toranas around now.
Not keen on the yellow highlights (brakes and leads) and the woodgrain steering wheel but each to their own. The best way to hide drum brakes is too paint them black but if you are changing anyway probably dont need to worry.
How much HP and what 1/4 mile time you aiming for with the new motor?
Rantopotamus
30-03-2009, 03:23 PM
I like the yellow!!! And the wheel was there already.. if it aint broke...
New motor will be slow and hold around 300hp at wheels low comp 8:8-1. I will run the current Edelbrock RPM AirGAP Manifold and 750 thunderseries Carb without turbo. With the amount of work in the heads it should redline up around 8800 and hold 30 psi on track runs and sit aroun the 18psi mark for street and cruising... when turboed.. But after its regoed its going for the turbo (GT51R or so) to just save hassles and fucking smash boost into it... I have no idea about times or HP readings that far down. But it is a unique single turbo blow through setup and ideas opinions which can help are all welcome!
For some interesting viewing you can see Jake Edwards car here who when i get in touch with the fucker is going to build my blow through setup.

go injection unless your going to get jake over here to tune it cause there is no good carby tuners in perth that know there shit when it comes to carby's+boost. And if ur planning to make big power then deff go injection

Activ8 Lee reckons some guy at Ova boost should be able to do it... Until now ive done everything myself.. when it comes to this kind of setup carby or fitting injectors i have no idea..
its all about the $$ coin... I can get away with blow through for $5k... Whats a ECU injected manifold turbo and all piping wastegate cooler worth u know??
plus i wana do something different. Can i drill out my manifold and just fit rails ect or is this just more expensive again? This is why i put it up now as im at the point where I could make a big costly mistake... Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers guys for the love! and Xibitor.. had no idea it existed.. ROFL!!
Tough car mate.... good job

Not sure about turbo application, but theres quite a few tuners who are extremely good (if not best in aus) at tuning supercharged carbied motors. Not to mention making big hp.
As for injection over carby, it's down to personal choice somewhat, but I don't see making 'big power' as a determining factor in preferring an EFI setup. You can make just as much (in some cases more) power with carby setups. Your real benefit with EFI is those startups on a cold morning, and in some cases driveability. Certainly disagree that a carby setup couldn't make as much power though.
Car looks sex. But not a fan of the yellow brakes, mainly as there aren't any other yellow features on the car to contrast with?? Otherwise I likey alot.
Rantopotamus
31-03-2009, 03:18 PM
The car will only ever be driven to shows and or doing skids as long as it makes big power and is somewhat driveable on street... I dont like the belt driven pro charger style superchargers and blowers go out of the engine bay and make it to hard to registe or attact attention... Turbo will be the way to go.. Plus i love turbo and I love v8's I cant wait to feel / hear / experience big boost with gate on a high reving v8!! aaghh!!! And it seems somewhat more like antilag if its Turbo :-)
Theres a guy called steve something or other makes blow through pro charger motors in USA over 2000hp... drag cars n shit obviously but if its done well it is very powerful and very reliable. If youve seen Jake edwrds builds they all do huge hp.. I just want good hp im talking 600hp at the treads and a car which will be fun for a couple years then eventually do something where bigger $$ can be used as i am on a budget.
What else would you make yellow?? the pics of car are during the build so engine bay will be tidier but yeah car is pretty much same but has been internally bombed and auto now. well in 3 weekends!!!

Nice car mate love it!
Mick at Ovaboost should have no drama's with the blow through setup. He did have an old 202 with a blow through setup on his LJ before he got the 2j!
That did some decent times for an old 202!

Thats obviously the guy Lee was talking about then!! rofl 7 sec 202!!!
when its fully tuned id hope for 10's. And still be driveable on the street...
I love all things Jap but just to get out there and run consistent times in a car that looks good and is aussie is all i want to do.. + DOING FUCKING MORE BURNOUTS!

i went the carby turbo setup cause it was deff cheaper but nowhere near as reliable or tuneable. Manifolds/cooler piping and exhaust work will be extremely costly because everything is custom. Mick knows his shit and will tune it well, its just tuners dont want anything to do with carby's anymore too much work/effort they would rather be sitting in the car making adjustments on a laptop. and if all u want is a 10 then u only need to run low boost like 10psi.

31-03-2009, 07:24 PM
well like i said motor has been built buy a guy who builds twin turbo 9000rpm reving ski boat motors.. like the guys who do 30 - 40 min runs down rivers with 2 guys skiing on the back...
No way have i spent anywhere near what they cost, but he has said that 30psi and 8800 is maximum i should be hoping for... and 15 - 18psi on cruising with 7000rpm or so limit if i want it too last... should be fine and plenty powerful at 15 and reving around the 7 mark.. its a v8 fuck i havent seen many v8's that rev that hard!!! . I hope for all sake it will live happily so I can actually enjoy the competitions and show up some of the bigger names!! Will have to stop in and meet Mick next week to have a chat to him.
Already been quoted on all exhaust and manifold piping. Lee Sanders is doing it for a very good price i think! the head fuck of normal exhausts in a Torana and a 350 Chev is huge already, let alone bringing it all top mount behind the passenger light. If anyones seen Gups it will be similar to that but Blow though obviously and about 3/5's of the power and half as nice!!

There are plenty of workshops that will tune this type of thing. Just probably not your jappa workshops like X-speed, C-red, ASG, etc. Most of the tuners dealing with carbied cars would rather tune them, then have to deal with a laptop.

Lets do a swap then! Let me guess though, your down in woop woop?
I may be heading down for a couple days to chill so I will let you know but if your up this way next we should swap!
And Agit8d I wasnt at my current mob for long and had fark all holidays so need to get to work ASAP... I only got 3 and a bit weeks paid out! that shitll be gone in a week! But Car is priority.. I have the little gazelle i can sell if i get broke or can just go work as a laborour or whatever to get by...
I will always find money for rent but the rana is a pit which you only really notice something has been done when more than 3 zeros are involved!! LOL
But from the list of shit which was rattled off the motor sounds very very nice!!!! parts alone cost me close to $4.5k!! LEt alone all the dual keyway crank/balancer, custom sump, huge ports, stud kits for everything yadda yadda <-- I am a tad excited!!

HAHA na its all good Andy! ill suss it out.. think i got a job lined up FIFO to Esperance Port loading ships in a loader for a month or so.. The cash injection of a payout will be awesome to get the car finished.. If all goes to plan.. steering column and Torque converter allowing it should be done during the week coming!!
Yeah its tough and i really love how its turned out but theres something about bouncing a 4 off limiter sliding around which is just a whole lot of fun!!!
Im jealous of your car haha so its nice to see you like this one! :-)
Xibitor I got rid of the Top loader with chev bellhousing and shifter ect a while back! Cable clutch and 2 tonne clutch sucke ass! The mrs couldnt even push the clutch down! Imagine how bad it was driving it! Left calf muscle from hell!
Im keen to get this done this week so if you can get your auto gear ready ill get mine out!! can even meet you half way or when your up next.. either way!

mintaz gotta love the old toranas i sold mine 2 years ago to put a deposit down on a work van and regretted it ever since. tried to buy it back but the bloke wanted heeps of extra cash. prick. is sanders gonna make up new manifolds or use the holden ones turbo around / upside down. not a bad way to spend 6 g by the way actually a pretty good price. who put it together?
Rantopotamus
18-07-2009, 12:09 AM
The motor internals and assembly was the only thing really included in that price.. I had it all in there b4.. just the stock 350 with the manifold. All the internals where done this time around...
Not even going to get into the headaches of putting this thing together.. there is no clearance anywhere, FUCK HIGH ENERGY SUMPS!!! FUCK TURBO GEARBOXES!! FUCK CUSTOM FITTING SHIT TO TINY TORANAS!!!.. shit had to be cut, bent and fucking forced into place so I am now at a point where everything is finally in.. extra care was taken and time and money to get everything correct... a lot of nolothane was added but the main question and problem is do I continue down this road of turbo and try conquer the epic problem which is room!!! u cant get a socket onto the sparkplugs without removing the headers... More piping will just be more chaos and more trouble than its worth...
So if anyone saw the AN racing car come over last week
http://anracing.net/
I am looking at changing my minda... AGAIN and just focusing on cooler piping... or I go buy this beautiful 6/71 polished blower and manifold and carbies next weekend and fuck the whole idea off!!!
2 many options.. 2 hard! or no rego!! which way to go!!??!
DanWA
18-07-2009, 07:15 AM
you've gone too far to go half cocked now!
i went your same direction until i realised it would be a prick to keep rego and some sort of drivability so i sold my chev gear and went 26/30, keep under the bonnet and off the radar that way to.

So the Rush before Motorvation...
Car runs, drives sweet in NA form for now... Leaks oil like if it was on its rags and had skipped the last 3 periods by not eating the sugar pills. Steering column gets stuck on the so called "OFF THE SHELF - BOLT ON" headers from Castlemaine so Saturday I decided to rip the motor out. New Seals and its booked in to Mettams - Morley delivery courtesy of our rseidnet tow master gezza on Wednesday morning to get the fucking exhaust right once and for all...
Will be all back together by sunday and tune patched up during the week ready for skids the following week.

These are all old videos with the manual and stocker motor.
FYI it has a mini spool - Manualised Turbo 400 - line lockers and a built 350 chev with 8 : 1 Comp now.. Less poweful... until the sidemount goes on ofcourse... :-)

I do like the wheels.. I actually just fitted chrome door handles to try get the whole package looking better.. If I had more money I would try a few sets.. Ill be at motorvation.. com have a chat and a look.. you will see it is as good as the pics show it to be but there are things which could have more coin spent on them. I have done near enough anything I feel I can do myself. There is billet spacers on there now.. If I had 4k id smash a set of fucking 19inch custom fitted fuckers with no finger room and be done with it but it actually has skyline / Ford stud patter and close to normal offset with the huge spacers... So I can run huge dish 14s or custom billet specialties or GTR rims - FPV wheels ect... The current wheels where the best I could afford on my budget.
The thing lives out of the garage for 2 hours a month.. at most. When it does live.. it fucken lives hard then goes back into hybernation.
Do I want a procharger and to tidy it up a bit.. yeah.. but I dont want it to get to the point where im worried i might scratch something or break something and not drive it like its meant to be driven.
Just a bit of info... the motor is new and slow as fuck.. I will try my best to do bulk skids.. but if powercruise is any indication she needs a bit of love to get going. The motor is just waiting for boost so near enough same power as a stocker. The line lockers should help me get up into that top gear limiter love.
Bonnet hole is for the air filter to poke out... After the motor was rebuilt I replaced the engine mounts and it sits a few mm to one side and now it has to stay under. Bit of a newbie mistake but I could get a smaller filter assembly and a 5 inch thick filter to stick out which I may do for motorvation... But for the street I like it hidden. Cops have never picked on it suprisingly. Anyway it will be extended for either 8/71 or pro charger blow through setup so no matter. Id rather have the fucking bonnet off for motorvation!

Na I had it built.. Forgies, solid cam, roller rockers, porting low 8 : 1 comp.
2 reasons why I pulled it out less than 2 weeks to motorvation with only 2000kms on the motor.
1 - It leaks oil from somewhere.. now that its out and I have investigated im close to crying as its just a rocker cover!! (i hope) LOL - It shoots out oil when i trompped on it straigh onto the exhaust and it made a nice smoke storm until it burnt off... not very safe for skids.
2 - When on full noise and you try and correct a powerslide.. the fucking steering hits the exhaust. Shitty engineering - didnt want to spend $4k on custom headers but still it should not have happened. I lost it at powercruise got annoyed pulled the wheel off and hit the fuck out of the runner in question until i peirced it and it has a shitty exhaust leak - and still fucking hits the steering column.
Pictures of my shitty evening tonite below.

Passenger side extractor undone - dont mind the epic goo it was a quick fix to try stop a leak.. not much room huh? Thats the fucking good side!

Drivers side tragic fail. No access steering colum - which rubs against runner - spark plugs are fucking pretty much next to extractors.. leads cop a hiding.

The car is jacked up but you can see where the exhaust goes.. its pretty low around legal, but my Turbo 400 is the lowest point of the car. - Too low. I hit everything.

Custom stall from a Torana in Adelaide - ebay cheapie.. stalls at 2800 and flares to 3200 as it is now. Seeing as everything is out and I am going to bolt on a huffer. I want to use the car on the steet still - just by looking can anyone decipher if its any good? I am told with around 500hp at the wheels it should stall up at around 3400rpm which I am happy with and hoping for. Does this sound about correct?

Spark plugs - the extractor is loose - this is the onyl way the lead will go on - then cover it with heat shield and bolt up header. FUCKING GAY. there is a couple like this.. ( this is getting modified this week.)

Bad quality phot but you can see where I have hit the runner when in a huff at powercruise to try not ruin my day and I have broken through. This runner will be cut out and the bend twisted and moved out of the way. This is where it hits the steering column uni joint.

Someone took out the flexible coupling off the steering and didn't shorten the input rod ... thats probably why its fouling the knuckle
If they had have put a longer connect rod from first knuckle to second and shortened the rod out of the rack it would have bought you alot more room
And when pulling motor and boxes out of Toranas we usually keep it all intact and roll the xmember under the car with the motor, box and exhaust all connected
Then you don't have to wrestle with the high energy sump
the motor and box fit without any cutting, bashing , mods that way
Unless your running a big stupid cap on your dizzy then you need to mod the firewall lip
And there are 2 types of engine mount plates that bolt to the block.... HQ style and Torana style
They put the engine in different positions... both height and distance to firewall
And CRS stuff is poo ... there are much better options out there that are better designed
Straight plug heads suck.. thats why I bought alloys with angle plugs
You can buy Accel short plugs to suit to give yourself alittle bit more room
And some exhaust makers cater for different plugs with their header designs

I had the flexible one with new nolothane rubbers ect and had the same issues. This is not the first time i have ripped it out and usually do pull the car over the chasis and leave motor and box... But after the huge issues aligning the car and fitting the new bushings up and working alone I decide to the lift the motor out. Castlemaine themselves instructed me on what to do and to be honest I was not happy with their customer service or advice but it was a very cheap option compared to a custom set. But you are right. I cuold have shortened the rods but again working in my garage alone with minimal tools for modification I opted to change them up.. the extractor needed to be repaired either way so they are just giong to roll it out of the way and fix up some other imperfections. Not really a big deal.
I agree CRS is poo. And I usually pull the dizzy out first thing then pop it back in last... saves me bending the firewall or damaging the cap.
Can you maybe post a pick or link of these angle plugs you speak of? How do you get a socket over them ect?
And fuck me how annoying is a high energy sump in a torana... I think I have the angles sussed now.
Thanks for your input. Im hoping this is the last time before the motor is out before rego and then the procharger. I think I may actually lift the car off to put it back together - either way. I fucking hate working on it.

So we tried to put new rear main in on weekend - Balancer was on tighter than a crackhead sucking someone off for free crack and i had to put a hold on things. It just wouldnt come off.
Main bearings show signs of dirty assembly (grooving) and the crank has a huge score - groove right were it seals. Its already at 30 though so i decided to not poolish crank anymore + motorvation is less than 5 days away.
After seeing the damage to the crank and bearings after 1500kms I put it back together and dropped it off at the place that built it today and took the friendly approach. They offered to grind the crank down ten though and put new bearings and gaskets through. I decided to just go with a really fine polish - stay at 30 though new felpro gaskets - hopefully get it back tonite and get the car back together tonite. Rear brake lines and linelockers Wednesday - Tune Thursday.
Fuck im cutting it short.
Did a bit of rewiring (ran fatter power chords to starter - alternator ) Had the extractors customized to suit my car a bit - chopped down the steering column and fitted new uni joints ect... Will be lucky to fucking drive it for a day before motorvation at this rate.
EDIT :
Engines getting new bearings - should be ready for pickup tonite got 4 evenings to get it running tuned and worn in for skids.

cheers dude.. paint is awesome but its life length seems to not be holding up tremendously... still looks good but there is bits I want to fix but cant being the type of paint it is...
will need to get some sort of graphics or colour addition to cover up the couple bits which are not perfect ot paint it again...
the gearbox just wont fucking stop leaking... new motor in and cant even enjoy her!

sweet skid dude and sweet torana aswell, you ever thought about either putting on of those tall K&N filters so it sticks out the bonnet or maybe a bonnet scoop ?
Rantopotamus
15-03-2010, 11:34 PM
14 inch filter used to stick out but decided to stay under the bonnet.. hole works well as cold air intake + I can lift it out when i want...
NEver have cop trouble when its under - get pulled over every time im out when filter sticks out..
+ new engine mounts and auto have tilted motor a bit and now it doesnt fit on a 14 inch assembly! haha
Blower soon anyway so no point!

Did they spray lots of water in the bonnet hole? You'd have to say that there is absolutely no point getting your car washed by those girls for any car presentation benefits. Putting hands on the boot while chamoising the rear window, then sitting on the car haha - I trust you thoroughly enjoyed yourself anyway dufus. :)
Looks good parked up with the other torrie!

I never excpected the car to be cleaned...
In any way, shape or form. :-)
They are smart enough to know how not to damage the cars. My car is made of steel! Bitches probably didnt way 50kgs...
Let them lie on the fucker for all I care!
And yes - I did enjoy it immensley.
Thank you boys for your comments - Torries are nice together. They are both chicks too!
