Hi, my names TJ, and some of you might remember quite some while ago I used to drive a performance car.

Its been a while. While on holiday on QLD I decided enough was enough, time to have something half decent again.

Now my name isnt Webb/Brockbank/etc so it need to be budget. Then I had to factor in what I liked more... skids or handling/epic launches/helis. While doing skids were always fun , in todays hoon infested society I figured I dont need the hassle of hoon laws etc, and enjoyed the later, so 4wd was the way to go. So then I thought about it some more.. and figured I wanted another Liberty. Despite the utter and absolute headfucks with mine... I actually deep down loved it.

Then this came up -

http://i44.tinypic.com/215x85.jpg

So lets talk turkey -

91 Liberty conversion - 4wd Turbo
TD05 Turbo
Turbo back 3 inch exhaust
FMIC
Bosch 040
4 pot brakes
02 Sti rims
Strut bar up front, thicker sway bars (thicker then my old ones too) and WRX struts and coils.
HID's (8000k)
Decent stereo (i dont want the subs or amp so be for sale soon I guess)
I know tj sticker
Few other bits and pieces.

So thats the good.

The bad -
Popped donk (small issue you know)
Paint is shit (I dont give two fucks normally, but its actually beyond what Id even allow)

So why did I buy a car with a blown motor and shit paint? Well, its got 6 months of rego - good start. It also has 20 pages of paper work from the DPI and permits for all mods including turbo swap. With this new laws about conversions etc, and the memories of huge headaches to get the last car regoed, this was a massive plus for me. The dollar cost in getting that done to a converted Liberty if I had done my own would be massive. Plus it was a bargain when you add up the value of all the bits in the car.

So obviously, the plan is some paint, a donk, and to get back out there and enjoy some cruising again. Stock ecu/boost/injectors/etc for a while just to take some baby steps for now. This one has full air con, electric windows, sunroof, while my old one didnt have any of that. Whether they stay remains to be seen - weight reduction is free and helps all aspects of performance.

Really excited about having something to do it with. Like I said, its been a while. Expect to see it out and about around mid year.

Thanks for reading my joe spec essay on my new dak dak.

Nice :D
How cheap is cheap?
I've been driving an evo 7 round yesterday & today... Makes me think about buying something AWD for some cornering fun!

duste
20-03-2009, 03:00 PM
Bit of damage but fuck it still looks good. I'm assuming the bonnet was only a recent addition to the car by the previous owner - seems to be in far better condition than all the other panels.

So...same colour or different when you paint it?

Alt_F4
20-03-2009, 03:02 PM
If your gonna paint it, I reckon all black with those sti rims would look hot.
Looks like a great base for a project :)

got some tasty bits already, should be a good car once the paint and motor are sorted.

TJ
20-03-2009, 03:10 PM
woohoo, good luck bud!

Hehe ill be talking to you about it soon anyhow :)

Doesnt have any panel damage that I saw duste - a scratched bumper doesnt really qualify - especially since it will be painted.

Jan, Adams keeping his seats - with -05 Sti seats and sunroof, i dont fit well, so worked out well for him to keep them. Another set of V5 sti's will go in it in due course.

20-03-2009, 03:14 PM
Goodluck with it mate.
If you are on a budget, the simpler the better.

It looks like it needs some panel work (secondhand cars always do), so my suggestion would be take care of that and then spray that car exact same colour.

That way, you don't have to spray inside the engine bay or the door jams or the boot etc...

You may not love the colour but I am sure with your imagination you can do something exciting, you know, black bonnet with black rims or something like that.

Get her down in the weeds, paint the front mount black so it disappears and maybe even paint the black rubber strip red too.

Jordan.

TJ
20-03-2009, 03:15 PM
Jordan, I dont mind the colour at all - so staying the same is no issue.

haha @ the 'i know tj' sticker on it.

good to see you back in a turbo car :)

hopefully its a tad more reliable than sneepy mk1

TJ
20-03-2009, 03:33 PM
Only reason V1 wasnt reliable was because I expected too much from the car and had an overly itchy trigger finger when it came to things like EBC settings etc.

Up to me to treat this one better. Hopefully my time away will bring me back with a more sensible outlook.

Where did the name sneeper come from?

TJ's first 'show-spec' sneeper used to have the plates "sniper" on them.

But obviously that was taken, so the plates were [SNYPER], with a Y. Hence, sneeper.

The old one for those of us who havnt been around as long.

Mods - Custom 4 in one chasis build meaning that super stiff coilovers felt ok as the body flexed around it, Limited edition gold tri spokes to compliment bent Rays rims and stock WRX ones, Motec, VF30, FMIC, Exhaust, 4 pots, Strut bars and JIC coilovers, sti interior, etc etc. Went well but was fragile due to driver usually. Way too loud, way too low, tints way too dark, etc etc, but spent so much time parked up no one noticed. Got yellowed leaving motorvation, then did another motor, so I gave up.

Is that damage to the front of the drivers door (i.e. where it meets the front gaurd)? It could be the angle of the photo...Either way looks to be a great base. With a fresh coat of paint and lowered, will look the tits.

EDIT: Just a suggestion too, if your doing a respray, maybe consider losing the rubber strips on the doors. Would give it a real smooth look IMO.

So since going out tonight was a fail due to the weather, im home early and bored.

Figured id write a small update like toochi's where nothing has actually happened but 3 pages will come from it.

Got thing running last Sat, but it had an issue where as it warmed up it would get harder and harder to drive. Coughing, spluttering, and rather rapidly would diminish into an undriveable state.

Spent the week chaning air flow meters, knock sensor, tried a different ecu, got the error codes readout, which showed nothing. Everyone seemed to agree it was the coilpacks.

About to buy some this morning when Fozzy suggested throwing a fuel pressure gauge on it.

Borrowed one from a fellow forum user, and within minutes it was very plain to see that it had a dead fuel pump.

Massive thanks to Sean and All Star for being available on a Sat arvo to grab a new one.

End of hassle was close, but in a final slap to face, the old pump did not retain the factory fuel pump sock, and the walbro ones apparently dont work too well in subaru's. Now subaru in their wisdom dont sell these by themselves, so finding one can be a pain as people like to keep them. A 100km round trip later and some help from a couple of top blokes sorted that.

Finally managed to put some km's on the car tonight. Drives nicely, still too scared to go nuts with it for fear of explosions, but definitely faster then a 1.6l carby powered lancer.

Now its time to slowly start ticking off all the niggly thing that need doing (a few urgent, a few not) Then start looking at getting it painted and some small upgrades.

Photo's of old parts vs new parts, side by side comparisons and finally pic of ceramic coated fuel pump are required.

Good to see you have the right idea about this car i.e. NO cutting corners, doing things the right way.

Good work on sorting the problem out too!

So small update.

Once again a few niggles, car seemed to be running well. To confirm this, I booked a dyno run with AllStar Garage. Now ive known the guys on a personal level for ages, but never actually had any work done by them, so it was a new experience for both sides.

Id like to thank them for their professional work and friendly attitude, shows why they are one of the best shops out there. (/brown nose mode off)

So the car made 170 @ the wheels first run. I had left it all as the factory had intended, mega rich all across the map.

Sean added boost, in steps, checking it each time. We ended going from about 9spi to about 13psi.

Last run produced a dyno shattering 223 hp @ the wheels, which we then back off to 215. It is so very rich in the mid range, so doesnt really kick you in the pants to 5000 rpm, kinda like Brockas old GTR setup :D

We then tried a V2 Sti RA ecu... same power, but way too rich in the mid range as its designed for 440cc injectors, not 380's. Then tried a JDM WRX ecu, which was a little too lean up top, so the original ecu is back in it.

Definitely feels a ton stronger up top. Now to decide how to solve mid range. But the afr's are safe, etc, etc, so Im glad.

nice work, something like an SAFC would be a good bargain choice if you just need to lean it out a bit through the midrange.

Need more power because my 2L non turbo is going to hopefully be around that power level soon!

I like the new boxy red and black wheels..

China TE37's time attacks.

Looked so much better online :(

Oh. also found out it doesnt have a 3.9 WRX box in it.. it has a short ratio 4.1 box in it.

Both are here. White one sits here dormant. Unregoed, broken box. Shame cos it has a good 10 000km motor. But the rest of car is not so good.

Blue handpainted Denver quality show paint special bunky has probably done 500 000km by now, never serviced, leaks more oil then the valdez and gets driven every day.

And nah, no cruising this week. Not sure when ill get out to one,
