Who Uses Heal-Toe and what for?

upgarage

keep revs up so you dont lose speed when gearing down
and also used in old cars with worn synchros and crap gboxes

as up-garage says .... heal toe to gear down with out using engine braking.

Use it gear down before bends.

hahaha

i use it all the time, its more a habit now, i like smooth downshifts

Milhouse

not quite sure what style tom uses, but it involves a lot of throttle during downshifts to cause flame :S

can someone clarify ?

plus its a bit hard to heel-toe an auto for myself :(

mainly used in rallying also left foot braking . helps create slide while power on and using momentum to help get through tight corners

gearboxes arent designed for 'slowing' vehicle momentum, thats what brakes are for, thus proper use of the heel and toe technique limits any excessive force/wear on the gearbox - especially handy when your on the limit or pushing some decent hp.

habit for me, do it every time i downshift

smoother ride, nicer on the clutch and gearbox, something tells me cars arnt really designed to have the drivetrain push the rev's up.

when approaching a stop though i pop it into nuetral and use my brakes to slow down, i'd much rather replace brake pads than a gearbox

like everyone else said......habit now....for smoother, healthier ride. :)

yep, do it almost always now on the road and then at the track its completely natural.

No-one seems to have pointed out the real reason for heel and toe downchanging....

It avoids compression lockup? No-one needs compression lockup screwing up their cornering line when they're on the limit already....

I use it when i got late night drifting in the civic.

Its used to you can match rengine revs to gearbox revs whilst braking at the same time.

Its all about rev matching, say at 60km/h i can put my car into 3rd at 3700rpm without using the clutch, ideally if you were in fourth coming to a corner, you would break, change to neutral, rev to 3700rpm, and then change to 3rd keeping the engine spinning at the same speed as the gearbox.
This is also good for keeping your car in its power band.

v8souproar

i do it my laser coz me syncros are gettin stuffed, it also limits the amount of backpressure in the exhaust manifold as the turbulence created by the engine braking counteracts the scavenging effect of the cold air intake and modified spark plugs. no really its true!!...............

i like to use double clutching(if thats wat its called) also, its the same as heel toe without the braking, when u dont need to slow down, but want a quicker pickup.

lysdexia

i double clutch with a heel and toe simply coz im fully sick

Haha Yeah, I found myself using heel-toe and double declutching in mums getz a few weeks ago.. even though I was driving an auto for a year until last week.

My housemate is a rally driver-in-the-making, so he taught me all the little tricks a few years ago; heel toe rev matching, double declutching, handbraking, pendulum turns etc. Although I don't always use this stuff on the street, if I'm driving on suburban roads in a hurry and don't want to speed, I just focus on not losing much speed round the tight corners and roundabouts, during shifts etc, and with the knowledge that I'm saving my gearbox, this makes me happy =]

PLUS IT LOOKS COOL AND TAKUMI DOES IT!!!!!!!!!111111111111 :flipa:

ok now for the real reason its used for basically its used when coming in hot to corners of track racing it allows drivers to come into corners hard then jump on the brakes without having to worry bout engine revs and so revs stay high enough for car to power out of corners in engines power making rev range

dools

and reason for the flames is when u give it gas on down change unburnt fuel gets blown out the exhaust which causes it to ignite sometimes

razor
02-02-2005, 11:45 AM
Everyone's an expert.....2 farken pages of dribble....

As stated, it reduces driveline jolt. In extreme cases you can even get compression lockup through the driveline if you don't match revs. That's all. No other reasons.

i dont actually use my heel at all..
the ball of my right foot is half on the brake, and half on the accelerator.. and i just twist to push the accelerator

Thats how i do it anyway, maybe its just my size 15 feet, but it seems easier, and less akward for me.

Brodsta
17-02-2005, 01:56 PM
Oh i wont :D

last thing u want is to be standing on the brake to avoid rear-ending someone before a corner, then u go to nudge the throttle and u take pressure off your brake and end up in someones backseat.

i think i got the hang of it on my way to tafe, its so smooth, did a real shit shift through the city tho, made a dick of myself, haha

can you adjust the pedals to make heel towing easier?
in my 31 the accelerator pedal is heaps lower than the brake pedal making it difficult
drove my mates z32 and pedals are perfect and it's so easy to heel toe

I use it a fair bit on on the track.. mainly to loose traction drifting around horshoes when clucthing aint enough. Killer on the tyres thou. :dizzy:

Ijust got bigger pads on over the standard ones to make it easier to get to both of em..
