View Full Version : Canon L Glass
i have the cash to by another L glass for the 40d, and set my sights on a 70-200mm 2.8 IS USM
i know i have missed out on the lower prices due to the now crappy exchange rate, but i was really hoping to get it for $2100-$2300 if possible.
anyone got any ideas of where to try for that sort of price?
shopbot etc all have the best price of $2500 over east, and the places i have tried in wa the best price is $2700
As much as I hate to say it, I dont think you'll find one that cheap anymore.
None of the big discounters (JB, Harveys) have access to the L F2.8s and there is very little 'old' stock around purchased before the price rise.
I have seen better results with the F4 version, plus its much cheaper.
Something to consider..
nah f4 is no good
i already have the 100-400mm 3.5-5.6 L IS USM and it struggles in the low light indoor stadium type environment.
im just being tight as i want to get a macro set up to play with too but cant afford both of them if i cant get a super good price on the L glass.
Well its up to you.
We did a comparison last year with the 70-200 F 2.8 vs F4 on the same body.
F4 was the winner.

get the 2.8 even if the f/4 version is slightly sharper that doesnt help much when you need to shoot at 2.8, your best price atm would probaly be from over east, gone are the good times of cheap L glass luckily I took advantage when it was :).
I have the 70-200 f/4 IS and am stoked with it but I only use it outdoors. Also FYI the f/4 IS is 760g, whilst the f/2.8 IS is over 1.5kg. Around December last year I called up Camera House Leederville and they had the f/2.8 IS in stock, for $23xx. That was just before the price rise though.
cheers for that
camera house leederville is $2600
thought i found it over east for $2300 but when i called they said they dont stock canon anymore :(
best i have so far is over east for $2449 but he said in two weeks time it goes up to $2950 and that they cant go any lower due to only adding 5% for profit
looks like i might go with that
i did borrow a mates sigma version but my camera started to throw up error messages, which it had never done before, and although no one can directly point the problem to the lens, it has put me off buying anything other than canon. plus it hasnt done it since i took the sigma off :dunno:
the weight dont worry me either as the 100-400 i have already is like holding up a brick all day, so i have a monopod

id buy it sooner rather then later! yeah Im not keen on other brand lenses either, you know you will get goo quality with the L's, should walk with the big teles handheld
70-200 f/2.8L is an awesome lens... I have a non-IS one myself...
As for suppliers, lately I've been keeping an eye on www.qualitycamera.com.au when looking for gear... They have a strong Canon bias and sell only genuine Canon Australia stock...

yeah got my 5d mkII from qualitycamera, prety dissapointed with the price he gave me tbh especially since ive spent heaps with him!!! but I was desperate for one haha.
I got my 24-105 f/4L from QC... but the 1D Mk III I got from victoria, because for genuine Australian delivered stock, nobody could come close to "Camera Action Camera House" in the middle of Melbourne... The Camera House that sells 1D's here was about a grand more expensive, and didn't have stock anyway, with no idea when they'd get any....
