Police Minister Rob Johnson and Attorney-General Christian Porter have announced $6 million for a new Community Crime Prevention Program which will fund initiatives such as a rollout of closed circuit television (CCTV) in crime hot spots and portable speed humps.

They will also draft new legislation providing tougher penalties.

Mr Johnson says second offence hoon drivers will have their vehicles impounded for three months, up from 28 days.

"And on a third offence there will now be a mandatory confiscation of that vehicle," he said.

The vehicles will then be sold with the proceeds going into the Road Trauma Trust Fund.

Mandatory confiscation ftmfl.

Yeh thats a good point, money could be easily better spent. Public education system is epically underfunded, prisons are understaffed, hospitals cant keep up half of the time and have insane waiting times.

But with this hoon crackdown they will save hundreds of kittens from being killed by hoons.

anyone see today tonight last night. some bogan been has killed 3 people while driving drunk all in seperate offences. got away with small fine and 6 months inside. now hes on bail for third offence. unlikely to get a life ban from driving due to the offence being over a long period of time. did they confiscate his vehicle after he killed someone with it??? nooooooooo. hoons must be more dangerous. media and goverment all fucked!

at the end of that article it has:

Graffiti vandals are also being targeted with maximum fines doubling to $24,000 and jail terms up from one year to two.

How is "hoon" driving and graffiti related?

Fuck that, I'd rather be called a hoon than a graffiti punk. Graffiti should be more like 5 years jail, fkn pingpingpingpings!

i can understand why graffiti vandals are mentioned, but is "hooning" a criminal offence? Why should it be targeted in a $6M 'crime' crackdown?

Its all bollocks.

Burnouts & illegal street racing will never die.

Burnouts & illegal street racing will never die.

Spot on.

Hoon laws introduced a long time ago. Everyone cried that it would be the end of skids and racing.

4 years on, almost nothing has changed, except a 70yo now has no car.
Consider last weekend we saw 40 minutes of burnouts outside Kewdale BP.
Funnily enough, nobody was killed. If burnouts were as dangerous as the media portrays, surely there should have been at least a maiming.

Easiest way to protest their wasteful expenditure? Do a fucking burnout.

Ryan1080
24-12-2008, 01:26 PM
Everytime there is a story about a hoon having a serious crash on the roads, they show footage of burnouts. I never understood that. Obviously crashes happened at speed. How fast are you going when you do a burnout?? Chalk and cheese. Idiots!

complaining about hoon laws and the penaltys only shows that you actually do partake in what the law is set out of stop happening. so you are only making the reason for increasing penaltys even stronger in the eyes of those who want such law to still be in place.
there is a time and place for everything.

agreed but its still a waste of money and they will never stop that shit from happening no matter how much they spend, and there is so much other stuff that needs more funding and isnt getting shit all (schools / hospitals etc). how about spending 6mill on giving better driving education and spending some on making more drag / racing / drifting events more accessable

$6mil is not a lot of money in the big scheme of things. Most of that will be spent on CCTV for crime hotspots. If that means NB/Freo/etc then I'm all for it. Think thats brilliant.

I'm not really sure how they're spending money on the rest. Extra penalties and fines raise money.

$6mil breakdown:
$3.2mil on CCTV installments (includes $2mil kickback to backbenchers from CCTV company for contract)
$2.8mil on portable speed bumps and implementation (includes $2mil kickback to backbenchers from speed bump manufacturer and employer)

Total spent on the community - $2mil.

Ive said it once and im sure i'll say it many more times,it looks like the hoon laws are working well.

cops prob read forums like/including this one about people bragging about having runs, doing "200 km/hr", praised for doing burnouts etc etc all on public roads. (like nathans latest vid)

show cased videos promoting antilag containing such behaviour, people whinging and complaining about it, people claiming that current laws are doign fuck all etc are prob all reasons why laws are gettign tougher and tougher.

at somestage, the laws will get serious enough to stop people. (crushed first conviction, jailtime......) all of which will put off those that dont pose much threat to society.

This is probaly off topic, but had the weirdest thing happen the other day, was pulling out onto a road, 4x4 went passed and i pulled out floored first limiter, hammered 2nd probaly hit bit over limit caught upto 4x4 so started breaking and saw in my rear view a cop car thought fuck braked hard sat on speed limit, cop catches up and overtakes me and pulls in front of me I think fuk gonna be pulled over, he doesnt slow down so i keep driving he puts his lights on i keep driving and then the 4x4 in front pulls over and i kept driving, I still dont understand why he pulled the 4x4 over and not me haha.

I pulled out behind 2 coaster buses floored it 1st 2nd then hit the right lane to pass the buses then noticed they were both full of uniformed cops hahaha

Passed them very slowly with about 50 cops staring at me and continued on my way with a urgent need to change my underwear.

Yeh, thats what it is, it's the forums causing the government to crack down, because cops (who have no power to bring in new laws, and don't even get a say) read these forums...
How dumb are you?

It's the cheapest possible way to make it look like they are doing something about WA's road toll.

Thats it. End of story.

yeah cause cops investigating into drifting through adelaide hills on youtube had nothing to do with whats posted on the net? footage that fuels the media and gives the government an excuse to clamp down?

the vids give the current affairs programs alot of ammo to whip up emotion against the car community though....
so the gov't makes a very public focus on 'hoons' to satisfy the dipshit general community and here we are

obvisouly only a small part but its a good point

lolz exactly, Its a minority group so its easy for them too blame us for the road toll, They arnt going to blame Alcohol are they because most the politicians probaly drink drive and how much do they make from the Tax on Alcohol, its a joke.

I think the point Brockas is making is that the government introduces legislation, not the Police.

The government don't take advice from the Police and do something about it, it's all political.

what like when today tonight did a thing on a japanese drift video on youtube and said it was in australia, aca/today tonight are fukin retards and dont get their facts straight. and the cop in it should of done his homework before going on the show.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l53lbanVn3c&feature=related

on and on the point "where shocked no one was harmed" a lot of the time they will block off the road before they drift down it.

I have to disagree with this. As soon as there is a possibility of crushing or jailtime it will be more dangerous - not many at all will stop for the police.. cruises will stop, but cannonballs will replace them - more dangerous for everyone.

Not true. Just the other night at the big Anti-lag meet me and Brad in the other GTO got pulled over. The cop BS'd about a phone call of cars street racing. "A white one, a black one and a red one". So mine is white, Brad's is black, and apparently there was a red Celica ahead of us.

as has been said its all about political point scoring, real stats show people doing skids or driving like total spankers account for five fiths of fuck all in regards to the road toll..

the majority of deaths are in the country, and more than likely related to fatuige, or pissy driving, same as the city, yet, cause a pissed person ismore likely to be speeding its counted as a speed related prang, so the figures are way off in regards to people who've actually crashed due to speed, and not another factor...

realistically if the money thats been spent on the hoon laws and other crap to go with it, was pumped into other areas like training and so forth, you'd see a reduction int he road toll, the way they are going now, will see an increase in it...

but they got the extra political points you see

as for the legality of taking and selling someones car, im waiting to see how this goes in court when they actually take a car worth money, instead of beaten up old vn's and gemini's..

i had a cop one night try to tell me they can take them under the proceeds of crime act, which is utter bullshit as that specific act relates to stuff bought with ill gotten drug money, so im willing to bet the law they think they can take your car with is very flakey and wouldn't stand up to a decent court case, im interested to see the outcome when it finally happens...

increase the speed limit on the open rds to a speed that is reasonable or don't police it as stringent. Between LasVegas and SanFrancisco I was able to maintain a average speed of 85mph 15mph over the limit and as long as your not being a dick the cops just ignore you and over take you. they need that attitude here

i had a cop one night try to tell me they can take them under the proceeds of crime act.

the same way they tried to take my radar detector, saying I was using it to commit a crime he could confiscate it.
