Checking out Duty Free and have these 3 options

you can get some of these cameras cheaper through www.1wow.com.au
thats where the wife got my 1000d twin kit for 949
Ok sweet, yet to shop around so not set on where ill be purchasing from. Just looking at stuff thats around that sort of price - perferable with a pair of lenses.
Still have no idea what to look for - not keeping up with the technology as of late.

Also have a look at the shops, you can claim the tax back at the airport when you leave Aus so it will probably work out cheaper than duty free.
Yeah definitely will do
More concentrating on what to actually buy as opposed to price at this point (have a price range though).
Whats a better camera? What makes it better? What do you people recommend/look out for?
go to a camera shop and have a feel of the weight of the cameras and how they feel in your hand. see which one feels the most comfortable in your hands and which one you think is easier to operate in terms of button placements and the like.
i went with my nikon d70 over the then canon 300d because i liked the weight of it. also go read up on the reviews at dpreview.com

i think http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au do the 1000D for less than $900 with twin lens kit.
Budget for a few memory cards (just in case one gets lost of damaged etc) and a decent camera bag. Nothing worse than carrying shit around all day if its uncomfortable. Spare battery if you dont think you'll get a chance to recharge it when you need to.
JB Hifi have Sandisk 4gb cards for $20.
i was told that it had to be extreme III cards? or is that just coz i have a 40d and need to be able to write it all quickly to the card?

Dont bother with the Canon 18-55 and 75-300mm
Try to get an "Enthusiast Kit" with the 17-85mm lens at a minimum.

Extreme III are just the faster version of the memory cards SanDisk offer. They transfer at 30mb/sec, helps for sequence shooting and RAW format.

The D90 is a mid ranged dSLR, can record 720p video. If you go for the kit it comes with the 18-105 VR (anti-shake lens) which is pretty decent for a kit lens. Im pretty sure D90's have a self-cleaning function. They arent the smallest of the dSLR's but i like their size, the lower end Canon bodies are too small and fiddly for me, but others do like them.
Something to keep in mind is that Nikon and Canon use in-lens anti-shake technologies whereas Sony and Pentax (i believe) use in-body. The advantages of in-body is that regardless of what lens you put on it will work. The disadvantage is you cant see the effect through the view finder on the camera, which is the advantage of in-lens anti-shake tech. The disadvantage of that is of course that you need to have a lens that has VR/IS, they are more expensive generally and a little bit bigger.
Gerry Gibbs usually do reasonable prices for local.
The Canon guys might be able to recommend a kit at that price which id definately recommend having a go of, because a lot of buying a dSLR comes down to ergonomics/feel when you havent got any equipment at all because Canon/Nikon offer much in the same these days.
