Hey All,
I'm running new fuel line through my GSR and had an idea. I've upgraded the engine bay to -8 braid but I will have to upgrade the main line running from the tank to the filter also.

Is it safe to run -8 steel braid UNDER the floor of the car back to the tank/pump if it's secured with P style clamps say every 30-40cm or so?

I'm in 2 minds as I think it would be safe considering the car will only do about 250kms per month, But I'm worried that a large enough rock or something could still tear the line and cook me french fry stylez.

My other idea is to try and find someone who could possibly make a steel/bundy line with -8 fittings at the tank end, Although I'm not sure of anyone who would do this aside from possibly Go-Gear?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks All
Aaron

If you mean under the floor, as in floor pan yes ?. So where your current lines are now ?.

Then yes wont be a problem. If your flicking up stones that whill puch holes in steel braid, the you are for sure blowing apart the standard mild steel ones. If you want to be safe, you can always pre assembly run clear pvc line and heatshrink the ends, over the fuel line. Or perhaps even convoluted tubing would be good too , that takes abuse and is cheap to install, plus its a after install too , because its cut down the guts, it can be installed after the lines are together.

If your doing a surge tank in the boot, consider teflon lines. Fuel rails love twin entry, and make sure your fuel filter can flow atleast 2.5 times your max duty cycle flow.

I generally use the fuel IN line, as the new return when making new lines.

Also, no matter how fussy you are, attention to detail, and how good you build lines, buy and install a 1kg fire extinguisher. You never know ....

I like the fire extinguisher reminder , smart thinking for anyone who has a tinker with a car I think and they aren't expensive. Might save some serious embassment or more later on

have you considered running alloy hard lines under the car? i purchased a roll, and bent the lines myself. its easy to do with a pipe bender and cutter (not expensive to buy) or you can borrow a set like i did. it works out almost the same price as rubber line. you can use fittings to couple it all straight up to your braided line. im running hard lines under the car and then change it to braid at the bottom of the firewall.

fetish is on the money with ali hard line, very cheap and if you cover it up no one will know its not standard.

Have you considered using the stock fuel lines? They can be flared fairly easily to accept a compression-screw on fitting to suit your braided lines.

Btw how much power are you making? -8 is on the big side.

under $100 for 8 metres of hard line.

I used the standard hard lines to run between the factory tank and the surge tank. I cut off the excess with the pipe cutter and then used compression fittings from pirtek. You can get them with a barb fitting on the other end to use with rubber line or with threads to suit your speed flow fittings.

Normally if i do someones fuel system, i add in the cost of a FE that way its done. You just never know, having seena show car burn down (not fuel but PS related) from a pooly made line, just makes you cringe.

As fetish said, "almost same cost" but with more headache and hassle. Braided line is the way i go. Plus, use Speedflow gear. Ive used them all, and it is the best IMHO. (not often ill take a aus made product)

I've got a 1/2 ali pipe bender and cutter for this. When i did mine i run it in the standard mounts next to brakes lines ect. Covered mine with heatshrink the full length.

yes definately harder to install than braid!

good idea with the extinguisher. im not a big fan of the little dry chem powder extinguishers you can buy for cars. if you have ever used them you will know what sort of a mess they can make. better than your car burning to the ground, but if you are getting an extinguisher consider C02. No mess, you can tackle the same types of fires with it. the only downside is you cant get them in the little bottles. you have to go to the next size up. oh you can also use them to rapidly chill alcoholic beverages if the need arizes ;)
