A US teenager committed suicide live on the internet, egged on by those who had logged on to see him do it.

Abraham Biggs, 19, told users on a bodybuilding website he would kill himself that night - and invited them to watch.

Web forum monitors ignored his message because they assumed it was a joke, but others posted insults and even encouraged the Florida teenager to kill himself.

As many as 1500 signed on to watch, with some urging him to hurry up, apparently believing it to be a hoax.

The man's video footage ended only when police broke into his home, near Miami.

An officer with his gun drawn was seen entering the bedroom, to find Mr Biggs's lifeless body.

The teenager used the Justin.tv "lifecasting" website.

He was seen taking pills before lying on his bed with his back to the camera.

He was a member of the Bodybuilding.com forum, using the name CandyJunkie, and had apparently threatened to commit suicide before.

On Wednesday, he went on to the forum and detailed the drugs he was going to take.

He posted his suicide note on another forum, saying he hated himself for being a failure.

After taking the pills, Mr Biggs lay motionless.

Users watching the live feed continued to insult him, believing it was a stunt, but one called the police.

Justin.tv - based in San Francisco - is a network of thousands of live broadcast channels.

Chief executive officer Michael Seibel said: "We regret that this has occurred."
