Just moved houses and now im relativly close to the beach, probally 400 or so metres, but my brother told me the neighbors have had something like 8 cars in 20 years, and all have had rust eat at the cars due to the salt in the air
anyone live neer the beach know whether this is as bad as it sounds? having a 10yr old japanese car isnt sounding too appealing right now

im sure its not that bad. keeping the car washed all the time would help id say. Most cars in europe rust badly because of the salt on the roads to stop them icing up.
same principle.

look into paint protection polish n wax ... there is already a good chance it is already rusty in places if its a 10 year old car ... ... but unless your car is coming in direct contact with the salt water it would take a little longer to rust ... your neighbours are on crack if they are going through 8 cars in 20 years
keep car locked away in garage if ya got one ... or invest in a car cover.

I figured that did sound a bit of a crackpipe call 8 cars in 20 years, and considering we have a small hill and a decent distance in the way it wouldnt come into hardcore exposure of the sea air
car cover sounds like the way to go, as being a NOR peice of shit suburb we have a garage thats in an alleyway that is only wide enough to fit 3 ethiopians through
fucking NOR.

Crack pipe indeed... so 8 cars over 20 years, yeah right... no way a car will rust in a space of 2 years just by being exposed to sea air...

We got holiday house 50 metres from beach and M3 is fine. Bullshit call. Long as you look after your paintwork and wash car frequently enough it will be fine.

Nothing to worry about underbody wise at all? ie exposed parts of the car thats not covered in paint?
id assume regardless however theyve got some type of protection from primer or what not

only way a car is going to rust to bits in 2 years is if it is working under ground.

i lived that far from the beach a few years ago, and my car didn't show any worse signs of rusting than any other.
unless you park it on the sand in a hurricane, i dont think you are gonna notice. didnt really take very good care of my car either.

used to live 100m from the beach when i was a kid in gerro, old mans xf fairlane copped a bit of rust. make sure you wash them once a fortnight minimum and also the seals around your house windows as the salt eats at the rubber and they eventually disintegrate and just fall out haha

Id say just washing the car once a week is enough and most ppl with a decent car do that anyways...

Always lived about 300m from the beach and never had a problem with any of our cars rusting.
Even my R32, and that was almost 20yrs old and was never garaged.

Yup. Decent regular washes and a decent polish and wax. A synthetic wax (eg: Poorboys EX-P) as they are more tolerant to sun, salt etc.
