Awesome pictures.

The outline of Venus/Mercury imposed on the sun gives you an idea of how epic the sun is, considering Venus is a long way in front of the sun, and still looks that small.

Useless fact 101:
Did you know the sun doesn't actually radiate 'heat' like a fire does? Heat requires a medium to travel through, which space is void of.
The sole reason you feel 'warm' in the sun and the planet is a decent temperature is due to radiation.

Thats preety intresting, thanks for that

immense pictures, really have to admire some of the things in the world/universe

Doesn't fire also radiate heat?

Doesn't fire also radiate heat?

Fire radiates heat via a medium (air). It transfers kinetic energy to the air molecules around it, which in turn pass that energy onto neighboring molecules.

It doesn't actually radiate radiation (if that makes sense).

The sun has no neighboring air molecules to pass on its heat in terms on kinetic energy, instead its the chemical reactions (namely the nuclear fission in the core, which results in Hydrogen -> Helium reactions) which produce gamma radiation.

This radiation travels outwards from the core, and is converted into light and other forms of radiation (UV etc) as it's absorbed and re-emitted by different chemicals in the photosphere.

Hope I haven't put anyone to sleep.

fukn hell brockas my brain hurts now.... all this science and such!! some good photos in there....

can anyone shed light on the 2 following topics?
:black hole theory(waits for smug comments)
:the big bang theory (again waits for comments)

been racing through my mind and just keeps getting more unanswered questions

This isn't as easy to explain.

Basically, distant galaxies experience a relative 'redshift' when observed from Earth (indicating they are moving away from us). This is how scientists measure the velocity of distant objects.

The distance between galaxies is currently increasing, indicating that it must have been closer in the past.

Basically, the theory is there was an "initial condition" where energy was created into matter. This matter was extremely hot, caused nuclean fission (similar process to what occurs in the suns core), and expanded in basically an explosion.

Interestingly enough, the LHC will be used to back some of this theory up, as they are attempting to create matter from pure energy.

good write up! thanks!!! its getting to my head,

earth is in this galaxy and there are other galaxy's out there, BUT what is space in? from what Ive read its always expanding, but!! the killer question is what is space in!!! to have all these planets distances away from each other, light years away, yet theoretically if you venture in a straight line in space, you will never, never come to the end?
