Help me find this scamming pingpingpingping! [Archive]

History prooves the antilag members are pretty good at finding things; Stolen cars, stolen parts and underage girls. Lets see how you go with this one.

A friend recently purchased a car he saw advertised on carsales. The car was priced significantly below market value on the basis that the owner was moving overseas ‘tomorrow’ and that previous arrangements to store the car while he was away had fallen through.

A revs check conducted on the vehicle prior to purchase revealed the car had money owing on it. To rebut this, the seller provided a letter from a finance company stating that the balance of the loan had recently been paid and that the encumbrance listed on the vehicles title would be removed in the next 48 hours. A call back to revs confirmed that it can take a day or two to remove the encumbrance...

In light tight time frames and against my friend’s better judgement; he went ahead and purchased the car.

Subsequent enquiries with the finance company revealed the letter was a fake and that the house he bought the car from isn’t the sellers address . . .

Now the predicament. My mate is stuck with a car that has a significant amount of money owing on it.

My mate has attempted to contact the seller numerous times to try and instigate a return of the car in exchange for his money. After several phone calls/sms’s The seller agreed to transfer the cash but hasn’t been heard from since.

My mate believes the seller is still in Perth; and that the overseas trip story is just a bullshit cover to buy the some time while he escapes – probably across the border to Mexico like they do in the movies.

Basically what im hoping for is that someone here knows Scott Goodsell – The seller of the car, the author of the fraudulent letter and the master of bullshit - so we can help my mate get his $ back.

If anyone has any info – where he lives, works, hangs out let me know. As you can imagine my mate is keen as to find out anything he possibly can .

I doubt he owns an aircraft mate. If you owned a Piper Cherokee it would only be for a hobby or for training (useless for anything else). On his website he has no flying pictures at all and the aircraft is also registered in NSW. So i think the whole aircraft situation is not relative.

Agreed. However a traceroute on his website leads to spiretech.com, which is an ISP based in Portland Oregon, which is rather near his hometown of Beaverton, Oregon. His personal information like address and contact phone number I have provided above (15256 SW Millikan Way #335, Beaverton, Oregon 97006, ph 5036439206). His website was last renewed a month or two ago, so it is still active. Having the police contact spiretech.com will verify and obtain even more contact information..

Finance companies need security when lending large amounts of money for exactly a situation like this. The guy hasn't paid up and the lender is short whatever the outstanding balance is. The only protection the lender has is the vehicle, so they will recover it and sell it to regain some of their losses. The law makes perfect sense to protect the right people. It is just important when making a major purchase to check out the debt owing on it.

Reminds me when I lived in murdoch, guy who lived there before us was offering us his wrx cheap before he fucked off home to malaysia... anyway couple of months later we getting a few letters a week from banks for him, then private investigator comes around to 'collect' this wrx.... apparently he sold it before he left with a fair amount owing on it. He used to run a mobile phone company, we'd get like 10 or so '3' bills a month... one of them was for 'Jenna Jameson' etc.... got angry letters from people wanting money back for dodgey phones etc.

I'd go round there with the parents and say basically tell us where he is or we are suing you for the money. Also find out who lives at the house he sold it from and say they are a party to the fraud as well... maybe you can scare some info out of them.

But you can get a personal loan with nothing to use as colatoral? It should be treated as a personal loan and just go and take his house or something in his possession. If he has sold the car thats his problem for letting it go for more than he could have got for it.
This law is protecting big m oney businesses and not the little man who it should. The person who does the wrong should be the one punished not the innocent one buying the vehicle. They should also have signed documents saying that he wanted the loan etc to use in coart to get him to pay. I have a personal loan and Im sure I couldnt just turn around and say im not paying it anymore.
If I bought the car I wouldnt pay the loan out, I'd just tell them they can give me my $13,000 back and chase the guy themselves, its there problem, they signed this dogey character upto a plan.

I'm not sure about your specific issue, but this guy has committed fraud. So the issue isn't so much whether he has the money or not, he has committed a criminal offence. It's therefore not a civil dispute, although at this stage I don't think you have been to the cops? You can't get away with fraud by simply claiming you have no money. You have to follow through and file for bankruptcy basically (not an easy thing to do - especially over such a small $$$$ amount).

Whilst the cops do have the power to act on this, unfortunately there are fraud cases with alot more than $$$ at stake, so I guess it's a matter of preference. So I would say it is unlikely they will be able to do alot, however I would definately let them know the situation. And definately keep the letter.

My suggestion would be to get in direct contact with the company on the fraudulent letter. Let them know the situation, and that this guy has committed a fraudulent act with their companies name. File a police report and keep on hassling this guy. The company is likely to go a long way in assisting you, as financial institutions take fraud fuckn seriously. Keep the scammer update on everything your oing! I.e who your speaking to, that you've been to the cops, that you've spoken to lawyers AND that you know his address.

Try to appeal on a personal level, and let him know that his life can become very complicated if he doesn't see you (or your friend) right.

I'm not sure about your specific issue, but this guy has committed fraud. So the issue isn't so much whether he has the money or not, he has committed a criminal offence. It's therefore not a civil dispute, although at this stage I don't think you have been to the cops? You can't get away with fraud by simply claiming you have no money. You have to follow through and file for bankruptcy basically (not an easy thing to do - especially over such a small $$$$ amount).

I have been to the cops and have been through the courts, I have had a means enquire issued from a magistrate which orders the defendant to supply all their financials. The plaintiff then has the option to sell defendants property to recoup costs. However if defendant has nothing to sell and only has a wage or centrelink coming in then you go back to the magistrate to get a payment arrangement ruling. (And if that means letting him pay it off $20 a week for the next 10 years) then that’s the way it is. And yes like I said that’s fucked. At the end of the day if he keeps paying the finance company they wont do shit. They will say its upto the buyer to check??? Letter or no letter, as long as this guy doesn’t defraud them, they won’t care. I understand the fraud thing, However the finance company will be more then happy to take the letter from the purchaser and will pursue this guy for fraud internally themselves, but they will make no effort to help purchaser to get his money back
