Well guys the new season is just weeks away now.

Back to two high tech events this season. First one is on November 30 so hope to see plenty of you guys there.

No, just putting the auto in because i cant change gears for shit and a cage because i have to. I'll be starting off with the same suspension as last year ( circuit set up ) and change to something more drag friendly later on.
good luck with the season shane.
Im hoping for a 12.xx, then thats it, concentrate on the circuit instead.

Ill be out late season, ideally id like a 11.3-11.5
If it does a 10, hold me to it that i go in the burnout comp and rip helis untill the box gives up or my motor overheats
However, chances are that ill dial up 5k on the launch control, and it will spit the box on the start line and ruin everyones night.

A note on helmets guys, copied from the Motorplex website. This is due to new rules from ANDRA. Actually fairly sensible as they tend to deteriorate over time:
If your helmet is over 12 years old then it is probably not acceptable for use on the Drag Strip. Look for the following markings to check if your helmet is ok to use for racing. Sometimes the label is under the padding inside the helmet.
Full Face or Open Face Helmets bearing any of these standards are acceptable;
SNELL SA 2000, SA 2005, SFI 31.2 (US)
SNELL M 2000, M2005, SFI 41.2 (US)
BS 6658-85 Type A (British)
SNELL 2000/2005 - SFI 31.1 (US)
BS 6658-1985 Type A/FR (British)

locote
05-09-2008, 05:23 PM
over 200 000kms, 91mph was best.
rear tyres are illegal at the momment so i could torque it up to launch, so it was pretty much 1000rpm launches
Took nothing out of it..

Took my XR8 (Boss 260 4spd auto) which I have called "the quenda" down to the drags again and smashed my PB.
I Ran a 13.85 @ 104.04 mph with a 2.285 60ft time. My best mph was 104.4mph which I am very pleased with. I was getting quite a bit of wheelspin so that was affecting my 60ft times (I have very crappy tyres). I didn't do any brake torque launches. I didn't stall it up in other words.
Not bad for a basically stock XR8.

Well I finally had my first ever drag run on Monday.
After about a year of meaning to go down there I made it.
It's something that I have always had the intention of getting into so now the spending starts....
Just have a question about slicks though, now I'm still learning about this so don't flame me.
Do you need slicks on all four corners or just two at the back?
Also, where is the best place to get them, the only place I know of is Chris Mills or A1 Hi Performance.
Cheers :)
xr06t
25-09-2008, 09:30 AM
only on the back for a rwd..
if you get a full slick, you will need a front runner also, but just on the back for mt streets or similar.
how did you go? what time? mph?
MISS 13B
25-09-2008, 09:41 AM
Ahh Ok yeah that makes sense.
I did OK for my first run I guess.
Best time was a 14.1, best reaction time was 0.139, top speed was about 178 kp/h from memory.
My gearbox is just so thrashed though, every run it struggled to get through 2nd (auto box). Second run I did it was just smashing limiter so I had to back off a bit before I blew the fucking thing
So I'll get a set of slicks for the next run. Also have a box sitting in the garage which was built for and used in a regular drag car with a 2,800 stall so with these 2 new elements, I'm hoping to improve from there. Serious lack of torque is something I have to make up for unfortunately.
xr06t
25-09-2008, 10:55 AM
a big stall and slicks will improve the times greatly for sure!

25-09-2008, 01:34 PM
178kph is fair hauling for a 14.1, what were your 60 foot times?
Definitely a 12 on slicks (if the gbox hangs together), or just go for some Mickey thompson drag radials if you don't want to worry about front runners as well.
xr06t
25-09-2008, 01:36 PM
im guessing 2.5's or more! 14.1 @ 178 is like standard xr6 turbo time, and they weigh 1800kgs!!!

Cheers for the info guys
Yeah I'm not 100% on my top speed. Off the top of my head, I'm thinking 178 for some reason, I may be wrong though. I know for sure it's definitely over 170.
I'll have a look at my sheets tonight for exact numbers.
Not sure on the 60 foot times, do they have all that info on your result sheets? Such a newb with these details! Haha
First run was just me getting used to actually being out there and learning how to stage.
Next few runs after that, I was playing around with stalling up etc because it's slow as off the mark so I was trying to get my revs up to get a bit of a better launch, it's all about learning as you go along I spose.
Yeah I'll suss out whether to go full slicks or not, a 12 would be something that I'd be very happy with, I'm expecting I'll need a bit more practice before achieving that as yet.

Thats what everyone says. Thats what I said. :(
Damn, I was hoping Steve would be able to source slicks haha.. I'm going to try the local goodyear as i know the guys there are interested in racing as they mounted my last set and asked a lot of questions about my car ect...
You'll also need some new rear rims as im pretty sure they dont make 19" slicks haha
wadragracing
25-09-2008, 03:35 PM
All your incremental times will be on the time card. Remember reaction time does not affect any of your other times, ie a 14.1 with a .1 reaction time is not a 14.0 with a .0 reaction time.
60 foot times will be an indicator of how hard the car is launching. 2.5 would be a bit shabby, 2.2/2.3 would be average, 2.0/2.1 good, anything sub 2 you have to be happy with on normal tyres! With slicks you can aim for 60 foot times more like 1.6/1.7 depending on the weight of the car.
When stalling up, don't worry about the green light. Take your time and get the revs right up (right on the borderline of the car creeping even with your foot pressed hard on the brake pedal) and then just floor your right and lift your left and off you go! Sounds easy huh hahahaha
MISS 13B
25-09-2008, 03:44 PM
Haha yeah Tones, I know the feeling. Unfortunately with Steve having to go to Sydney for that week, time ran out to get the slicks and that box in! Haha.
Plus with him chucking the shits at the bridgey and deciding to lock himself in the garage to work on that didn't help
Yeah the rims are the other thing that I thought of...19" slicks - not a chance! Haha plus my wheels are heavy as hell so that may have hindered me a bit.
I'm sure we would have a set of shitter stockies laying around in our pile.
Haha thanks for that wadragracing....it's actually funny because all Sunday arvo I was practicing my launches out at some back roads.
When Monday night came around, there I was staging ready to get my revs up and before I knew it the light went green so I didn't have stuff all time to do what I had been practicing....I've realised you don't have a lot of time to stuff around out there
beefcake
25-09-2008, 04:23 PM
next time your out there, get your little white lights locked in asap, before the other guuy has a chance to lock his in, then you will have longer time to stall up, that is a small catch 22 problem with auto turbo drag cars, smart racers will stage you out of the race;)
Pandyman has jerrys old slicks on rims, they have only done 4 passes from memory, and the bonus is you dont need front runners as they are street radial slicks (steel belted for steves info) , 600 bucks with those rims and tyres is a fuckn steal
wadragracing
25-09-2008, 04:39 PM
I've realised you don't have a lot of time to stuff around out there
Well, you've got all the time in the world really, if you're not worried about the car in the other lane ie more concerned with your own time.
Just come into stage and wait for the light to go green and then do everything in your own time, even if you sit there for five seconds it doesn't matter! Get your launch perfect then you will get a good ET.
Beefcake....just got to stall her up in pre-stage and then inch it in :)

25-09-2008, 06:56 PM
Ahhh OK so your time starts when you leave the line??
See I was under the impression that the clock starts ticking as soon as the green light goes on hence why I thought having a fast reaction time was so imperative to your overall result and hence why I didn't give myself time to prepare a launch.
So I had 5 runs, results were:
1.
Time: 14.72
60 feet: 3.19
Top Speed: 171.60
2.
Time: 14.18
60 feet: 2.79
Top Speed: 172.21
3.
Time: 14.34
60 feet: 2.88
Top Speed: 171.81
4.
Time: 14.67
60 feet: 3.21
Top Speed: 172.00
5.
Time: 14.49
60 feet: 2.99
Top Speed: 172.00
So I was waaay out with what I predicted my top speed was...bad memory.
Yeah beef, we were discussing slicks tonight. I'll suss out what's around and what I'll require for now. I just have to find some same sized stockies in the mix & match of shitter wheels we have in the garage.

Yep, don't worry about the green! The timers only start when the car moves, I can't stress this enough to a lot of newcomers to the sport! when you come into stage, the pre stage and stage lights represent beams on the start line. There is a third beam, when your car moves it will break this beam and start the timers.
Wow your 60 foot times have a lot of room for improvement. Next time you go down, try not worrying about when the green light comes on, and just build up your revs and go when you are ready, you should run 13s no worries on your normal tyres, but if they are the same as in your pic then they are a bit skinny for drag duties, some slicks/drag radials will make a big difference.

Yeah was pretty sure I was racing haha. First run was an 11.0/122, thought we were on the right track, then second run lost fuel pressure on the line and it stalled. Third run went backwards with an 11.4, chnged fuel pump between then and first round, went backwards again to an 11.5, and with a fuel pump pissing out methanol at the top end.

I had a run in super sedan yesterday and as predicted went out in the first round. After seeing the reaction times and consistency of the the cars its going to make it a long miserable season for me.
My first round loss.

I agree Shane that's a good run, that's just unlucky. If you keep up that sort of performance you will go rounds.

i think the only damage matt did to the car was a dent in the dump pipe and maybe the struts moved a little on the towers
there are scrapes all over the rear bumper. So time to find some wheelie bars amd get back out there, have to keep andra happy.

Yeh my times got slower as the night went on, best time of the night was 12.363, with a terminal of 114.89, 60ft was bad 1.89. Has a 11.8/9 in it with that terminal but couldn't get it off the line, was just lighting all 4. Only got 5 runs so not enough to try a few different things. Having to wait 30+ mins between runs meant that I was running cold tyres too. They need to charge more and reduce the amount of cars, it's ridiculous!

yeha marc did an 11.9, but it was still running its drift set up. which isn't very friendly when it comes to drag times.
What was impressive was a lift kit green el running a 9.8. Drove back passed us and no cage. Didnt see him again obviously.

That was the old speedworks car I am pretty sure, if not it's an exact replica, it has done 9's before so not sure why it was actually allowed to run without a cage.

supercharged xr6?
I used to work with a guy that was mates with some dentist that had a green el supercharged XR6 that ran 10's. Pretty sure it was worked on and tuned by speedworks. Has a custom Dry Ice system for cooling the boost.

Wasn't bragging just really happy with the time the car ran. It's only tunned for 18psi at the moment as suspension setup and tyres were the same from when I went drifting the other week.
Drive to plex
Drop skid's
Drive home
Over all a fun night and can't wait to smash some more boost in get some slicks on the rear and see what it's capable of.
On that note, the old man might bring it down to high tech titles with some slicks and changed susp setup to see if it can push 1.5 60ft's and low 11's

Just got home, records fallin all over the place. Was mint to see Judd set a 5.91 then Zappia go better again a minute later with a 5.90. Would be mad to see the 2 WA boys in the final but I bailed before the end..
Been ages since I've been to a big meet like that, good to see some of the guys who were racing years ago at Ravo are still around. Enjoyed it heaps!

He was one of the guys I was referring to who I used to watch race out at Ravo.. Used to have a bright yellow car, was surprised to see it in camo, has it been that way for long? Haha..
Was some green and purple/blue datto/mazda sedan there, turbo rotary.. Was farkin nuts, I like.
Also saw Luke steering a rail and broke out, not sure if it was in qualifying or eliminations.

Car was rebuilt after a bad smash some time ago. Camo paint scheme is matte finish. Was done in respect and tribute to Vietnam vets which Graeme is one of.
Does bloody well against the Australian field with little sponsorship

Meaning, the pregnant woman didn't stop and give way to the right, carried on instead and T-boned them.
