A turtle's shell is part of its vertebrae... you can't take a turtles shell "off" without hacking up half its back. Would look pretty obvious I reckon. :)

The specimen in question was found in someones backyard... and relocated... shell may have been removed somewhere throughout that process.

Yeh its a racoon missing some front teeth, its been in the ocean for a while so alot of fur fell off and rotted the skin off the front of its skull makes it look like a beak.
