Hey all, fairly soon I'm going to be chasing some new rubber for the Z. Sizes are 245/35/19 and 275/35/19. Will be doing the occasional track day (hopefully there will be one on when i am on break), and other than that spirited daily duties. If anyone as any recommendations that don't require the sale of a kidney, it would be appreciated.
Cheers
Shane
it depends on how hard yur gunna drive on the circuit, but imo get a set of track rims/r comp rubber & kumos etc for the road 19's

How much are you willing to spend?

19" r-comps = ca ching.
best to go for a semi comp like a federal 595RS or falken RT615 if they come in the correct sizes, otherwise a good street tyre.
yeah thats why i thought another set of smaller diameter track rims for the rcomps & leave the 19's for the road

I don't really want to spend much over $600 each for the rears. (i had a quote for 275/40/18 [my old rims] @$780 a corner, Bridgestone potenza 050) If i really have to, i will, but id rather not. I was looking at Federal but the dont make them in that size according to their site. Actually finding the sizs I want seems a little to be the main trouble. Or maybe im just not looking in the right spots.

oh and I have also been thinking about having a set of track rims with r-comps. I would possibly just run stock Z rims (18 x 8) with 255's all round in that case.
yeah i would do that, change em at home & then drive to the track on the rcomps
Lonewolf
04-08-2008, 03:51 PM
yes, much better availability with 18's.
will save your r-comps for the track too, prolonging lifespan and giving better performance.

For r-comps I definitely, will be staying with 18's (when the time comes). But still the dilemma of every day tyres stands...

try maxxis they have them sizes and i know dat for a fact coz i use to get tyres from tyremax in myaree for the place i use to work at in malaga called thompsons tyres and brake or call in they have prices and shit there 2
www.tirerack.com
they ship internationaly and it usually ends up cheaper then buying here.
might not be dot approved but who checks that?
go for a re01r, neova or z1. best option for track/street duties without going a full rcomp.
Lonewolf
04-08-2008, 07:29 PM
also note that you wont get warranty support etc on parallel imported tyres. Usually not an issue, but something to consider.

have u used a z1 yet or just going off reviews??
just going off reviews but i have a set on order.
most people rate them similar to re01r's which i have used. they were great. but z1's are almost $50 dollars cheaper each.

i had maxxis mav-1s on my galant. didnt find anything wrong with them! but my car was 4wd so i didnt have a problem with straight line grip..
i actually thought they were quite decent,, not for racing but fine for the street.

the v1 are onlty ment for street not track as they wear very very fast the ma-z1 are the more race tyre that maxxis do and drifters are getting a fair few laps out of a set off the ma-z1

i wouldnt rate federals as a top quality tire. good for budget spec but if you got cash there are plenty better options.

Federals are shithouse tyres

Federals are cheap but nasty.
You get what you pay for when it comes to tyres
Get some nice Toyo's, Yokos or Bridgestones
Miss 13b is right, you get what you pay for!
My favourite is the Toyo T1R for a street tyre

Tyres are one of the Biggest ones they check, as they can be a direct cause of a vehicle crashing, Dont give people advice in a tech thread that would result in something which may have severe implications should they import a set of non DOT rated tyres to save 50 bucks, It could in turn cost them alot more. they are DOT and Load Rated for a reason. Perhaps Pay attention to it.

It comes down to this: your tyres are the only thing connecting your car to the road. A good set of tyres is just as important as good brakes!

so anyway, turns out they are DOT approved. http://www.dunloptires.com/catalog/direzzaSportZ1StarSpec.html
turns out i didnt know what dot approval was. it has nothing to do with australia, its an american system. so what that has to do with our road rules or insurance i dont know?
so it seems i gave people a way to save many dollars and get a tyre far superior to anything for a similar price in australia? spose i fail.
that said i still have no idea if they are legal or not on australian roads, your an expert maybe you can shed some light?
Tyres must match that stated on the plackard of the respective vehicle, I dont have the physical Manual anymore but most tyre shops carry them if you cant find your plate.
so regardless whether or not he buys his tyres from america or not, as long as they are the right size and load rating it isnt a issue. he just ends up with far superior tyres for a cheaper price.
so my advice was fine, a little incorrect, but fine. oh ok.

Tyres sold in the US meet the same DOT standards as tyres sold here. Buy them from someone like Tirerack if it saves you money, you won't have a problem.
Edit - beaten to it.
To be honest I've found Tempe are pretty good on prices, not far off Tirerack actually, this was on $300 a corner 19's though, not $700 a corner.....

My favourite is the Toyo T1R for a street tyre
How would these go on the track? I am not looking for something Steve Jones uses. My car and driving abilities are nowhere near that requirement. Been told they are pretty good.
Also been recommended Falken Azenis RT615. Housemate has the RT215s on his 32R, and he reckons they are pretty good, but they don't make them in the sizes I want (255/40/17 or thereabouts) any more and the RT615 is the replacement.
These tyres will only spend 1-2 days at a time on the car, so I am not worried about life/noise level/water dispursement etc.
Out of interest though, how much would I be looking at for an R-comp in the above size?
Cheers

Get some r comps then if they're not getting used for much other than the track. Looking at about 400+ a corner for something aroung that size.

Damon,
RE55's will set you back about ~$400 a tyre in that size. Most people use them (Myself, Chris, Steve etc), but there are also the Toyo Proxis R888 which are a bit more expensive (what Richards and Weeks used at Targa).
R-comps are another world of grip, but obviously don't last at all on the street.
Are you going to be doing plenty of motorsport?
If so, don't bother messing around with "good quality" street tyres, just fork out for r-comps straight away.
If you want to get used to the track or the way your car handles before you use R-comps, just go out on the tyres you currently have. The difference between them and the best street tyres will be nominal compared to street vs r-comp.

Agreed, for a street tyre the Federal 595SS are a quality tyre (IMO).
As an R-comp, the 595RS are shit. They're more of an intermediate between streets and r-comps.
Still, a set to roll around on daily wouldn't be bad, just don't bother with them on the track.

That's not a whole hell of a lot more than I have been quoted for some of these "street" tyres. I assumed they would be up around the $500-600 mark each. Might have a look into them instead then. Where does one shop for a set of RE55's? I assume these are ok for use on the street as well (driving to/from/inbetween events)?
Not planning on doing a whole hell of a lot of motorsport, but the odd track day/No Limits event etc will be on the cards. I'll be waiting to hear my entry into the rally confirmed before spending up.
Cheers again.

i have federal 595ss's on the rear of my car; dont like em. i found the kuhmo ku19's a much better tyre for the same money, although they didn't last as long. the ku19's had a higher treadwear rating too, which was strange..

I found the 595RS to be quite a good tyre.
The difference between them and the RE55 around barbs for me were not quite a second.
I drove 24/7 on RE55's to see what sort of life I could get out of them and only managed 8500kms.
595RS's 24/7 including 4 No Limits nights, 3 trips to the drags and general day to day driving duties saw 41500kms.
My personal preference is for the 595's as an allrounder, track and street, with no dicking around changing tyres every time you want to go for a lap.
dont really want to make another thread , and a bit off topic but does anyone know where to buy mud terranes for 4wd 35inch for a 15inch rim , second hand or new doesnt matter?

At the moment the only person who brings RE55's into Perth is Kerry Wade.
I don't have his details on me, but pm chris260 and he'll shoot you details.
RE55's are a street legal tyre, and yes they are fine for driving to/from/inbetween invents. Just don't leave them on all the time.

Rob lost 2 seconds with the 595RS's I think, quite a big difference between a 56 and 58.
If you're doing 56's on RE55's, I'd predict 58 on 595RS's, and 60's on street tyres.
Hence an "intermediate" between street and r-comps.
No doubting they're a good all rounder, but not if you want track tyres.

are RE55's better than the 70s?
also, is there a case of where too wide of a tyre is bad?
i have 4 255/40/17 federal 595'ss on my GTR and they seem to work well as a daily street tyre!

70's are not an r comp, just a high performance street tyre. Width would really only be a problem if it caused clearance issues.

And side wall flex,
All comes down to rim Width to Tyre width, and profile. Can cause Wierd things sometimes, but as long as its not hanging over but shit loads (reverse stretching) then shell be right...
