Just been arguing with a mate on msn, but figured it might be a good discussion topic.

Its been a few years since a top mob film, but there is plenty of classics out there.

For those of you unsure what I mean, we are talking movies along the lines of Godfather 1 2 3, Scarface, etc etc.

Its so hard for me to pick a favourite, but this is my contender.

Casino (1995) - Revolves around the mafia running the Tangiers casino in Vegas back in the day.

Nearly 3 hours long, but such an awesome movie. Love it.

Whats your favourite?

American Gangster

Recent flick with Denzel Washington in it.

goes for nearly 3hrs and is very bombed, watched it half a dozen times now.

Kind of like Snatch/Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, but not as good.

i thought layer cake was better then snatch/lock stock, its a bit slower but grittier.

some trivia for you, in layer cake, when their on the top of the high rise construction site owned the big gangster, the building has multiplex signs all over it. this was a dig at the multiplex bosses doing deals with gangster and generally being a corrupt pack of pingpingpingpings in winning building contracts in london.

in the same vain as the other pommy gangsters movies try Love, Honour & Obey. London gangsters, some very funny stuff.

Gangsta eh??

Well it's not a movie, it's a TV series. And without a doubt it's THE best gansta/crime/drama series of all time.

HBO's The Wire.

It portrays all sides of the story. Civilian/gangsta/politician/cops/etc. I can't begin to explain how good this series is though. It's the best thing that most of you will probably never see :P Anyone who has watched all 5 seasons (50+ hours) can vouch for it.

It's set in Baltimore, Maryland, and half of the actors aren't actors. They're just gangstas and ho's off the street yo. Some of the shit that goes on in the story makes the aforementioned films look like playschool.

YouTube link for season one trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2LEHvkogFU <<watch it it's only 45 seconds.

*Oh and forgot to mention. One of the main characters is gay, so there's various lesbiaaann lurrve scenes throughout the seasons.*

Seems they've all been mentioned already. Good call on Blood in, Blood out too, fits right into the lot of those personally. Underrated classic.

I have another i've seen a while ago, didn't get the best reviews due to being "an unrealistic eye candy" film (which sounds perfect in my books) is something called "The Business". For me its a classic and its really GTA San Andreas with the cast of Football Factory. Might be a weekly now, but if you get a chance, watch!

I know its a movie thread, but Sopranos would rank as highly as any of those for me and above most shows ever made. The Wire before it? Naw way.

Once Upon a Time in America has only been mentioned once, travesty!

What about City of God? Fits into the Gangster genre possibly, amazing film on so many levels. Its Brazilian but it ranks amongst the top 50 on IMDB im pretty sure.

i quite liked the departed with jack nicholson, matt damon and leo di caprio.

wasn't a bad remake of the asian movie Infernal Affairs, also Brother is a good one, about a triad that takes on gangs/mafia in the US. Pity I lost the dvd for that one.

Henry Hill: You're a pistol, you're really funny. You're really funny.
Tommy DeVito: What do you mean I'm funny?
Henry Hill: It's funny, you know. It's a good story, it's funny, you're a funny guy.
[laughs]
Tommy DeVito: what do you mean, you mean the way I talk? What?
Henry Hill: It's just, you know. You're just funny, it's... funny, the way you tell the story and everything.
Tommy DeVito: [it becomes quiet] Funny how? What's funny about it?
Anthony Stabile: Tommy no, You got it all wrong.
Tommy DeVito: Oh, oh, Anthony. He's a big boy, he knows what he said. What did ya say? Funny how?
Henry Hill: Jus...
Tommy DeVito: What?
Henry Hill: Just... ya know... you're funny.
Tommy DeVito: You mean, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it's me, I'm a little fucked up maybe, but I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I'm here to fuckin' amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?
Henry Hill: Just... you know, how you tell the story, what?
Tommy DeVito: No, no, I don't know, you said it. How do I know? You said I'm funny. How the fuck am I funny, what the fuck is so funny about me? Tell me, tell me what's funny!
Henry Hill: [long pause] Get the fuck out of here, Tommy!
Tommy DeVito: [everyone laughs] Ya motherfucker! I almost had him, I almost had him. Ya stuttering prick ya. Frankie, was he shaking? I wonder about you sometimes, Henry. You may fold under questioning.
