im too lazy to search, but am looking at getting a SLR

3 models i am looking at are:

Nikon D60 with twin lense kit
Canon 450d
Sony DSLRA200wb twin lense kit

Pricing is all very similar.

Just need ideas & thoughts on what would be the 1 to go for or any other suggestions

Cheers

Id say the canon would be the most popular amongst those, possibly a better range of lenses available too.
Read some reviews on the net and go and try them out in the shops, see which one you think is the best for what you want to use it for.

A200 just won 'best entry level DSLR'.

I just picked one up with the twin lens kit, it's brilliant. Can't fault it, and very easy to use.

Except Nikon?
Well thats not true, Nikon are leading at the moment with the best two pro/prosumer bodies at the moment, the D300 and the D3.
Canon have some catching up to do, where is the 5D replacement already!!

The D60 is an awesome bang-for-buck camera.. My mate used a d60 to take pics of my car & they turned out mint, easy to use etc. I wouldn't bother with any twin lens kit or anything though as the kit lens are useless.. get something like an 18-200 and 50mm prime (non autofocus) or 30mm prime (autofocus).

As the d60 doesn't have a built in motor, the lenses cost a bit more so depending on how serious you plan on getting going something like the d50 (discontinued; built in a/f motor. I've got one and the quality is great)

check out www.plemix.com I found them to be the cheapest bunch...

Yeah I agree DRKWRX. Nikon are still on par with Canon. I have a few professional photographer mates who have both switched to Canon after 10 years or so. The type of guys I'm talking could sell their camera gear and make $100k. Paul, one of them, has a lens worth something like 35k. Hidious. But I spoke to him a few weekends ago and he wouldn't touch Nikon over the new Canon stuff.

Typical ignorant photographer, not suprising coming from the "Canon is better than anything camp".
This may come across as biased, i am a Nikon owner but i have used pro Canon gear that my friends own and i respect both manufacturers. However these are some facts for your mate...
Canon havent released anything new for pro's for ages, the 5D is ancient now, the 1D MKIII is an evolution over the previous models and they have absolutely nothing to compete with Nikon's D3, D700 and D300. The 40D was a lazy evolution too and still cant compete with the D300.
Low light wise the Nikon D3 is the BEST body on the market, no Canon can come near it, the 1D-Mark III is the closest but still pales in comparison of real world low light images. Nikon is still renowned as having the best flash system available, with the release of the new SB-900 they also have the most superior flash units on the market with the most accurate metering and light control. Nikon have been using the F mount for ages so you can use some really old lenses that have nice characteristics on most Nikon bodies, however for AI-S type lenes you will need a pro-sumer or pro-body for them to meter properly. Canon went to the EF which has limited the choice in lenses but they do have a substantial line of f4-L lenses which Nikon dont (yet) which is good news for someone who wants something better than an entry level lens but cant afford a pro f2.8 zoom.
Canon did have the lead but Nikon over the last couple of years have stepped up and taken over, its noticeable in the leap of dSLR market share that Nikon have gained and Canon have lost making them closer than ever sales wise.
Rambles over and the defense of Nikon aside, your friend is essentially full of sh!t because equipment is only one part of the puzzle, if i took a photo with a Canon 1Ds-MKIII and Nikon D3 with their own 24-70 f2.8's respectively and didnt tell you which is which you would be hard pressed to work out which one came from which camera.
I know theres quite a few Canon users on the forum so feel free to flame me if ya want but i hope you bring something good to the fight :P
