What's a good head machine shop NOR that'll do a good job and reasonably priced? Just need the head decked and some welds.

Harris Quoted $65 for decking and around $20-$30 per weld (for water galleries). I'll drop it off there, the guy seemed nice on the phone.

Head Torque in Osbourne Park
I Would go there for standard skimming and work to that effect but not peformance.
Either ranch or peformance mods gets my vote. I use ranch for my blocks and cranks for the workshop, peformance mods for all my personal motors i build and head torque for all my heads at the workshop.
All do good work, however i believe head torque to be a little pricey for what your getting.
If you want a bloody good job at a decent rate out east, motteram motors - lindsay. He does all my personal motors heads. In midland.

jerrys a nice guy but im wit josh123... hes abit pricey and more likely to be at home facing heads and cleaning up seats than flow tested performance work.
if its SR?? try finding out who used was/is doing hyperdrives head work... did a glamour for my mate including comb chamber chamfers and oil gallery grub scews... it was squeaky clean to.

any of these places open saturdays? Harris isn't and its too hard for me to drop it off during the week. I couldn't find motteram motors in the yellowpages or any where.

ranch trained sabo and ron from harris n harris trained gerry but i would say harris does top work and hes starting to get back into performance
and with gerry ive helped them a few times movin stuff from the old place to the new place up the road from harris and that place is amazing the new set up
i would choose headtorque over anyone

Oh no doubt head torque is one of the best around, there is no disputing that.
I personally believe that there are some other specialist places out there that can extract more from a head at a cheaper rate thats all.
For all normal work i believe head torque to be superior.
Applied automotives can have a habit of 'forgetting' to do jobs, ive been stung bad with this.
Motteram motors is a one man band, your gonna need to go see him to see the shop. Its in midvale, across the road from europe motors, and sort of behined veales.

Took it to head torque because they are open saturdays. Really nice bunch of guys and they have a very good setup there. Anyway my head is toast (too cracked and has had too much material shaved off) so they are reconditioning another head for me and doing some valve and port work. Oh and they said the engine has been detonating.... hmmm this all happened on the dyno too.
Pm me if you know of a good wolf tuner.

Thats about 5% of your 5k 10 second car.
Brockas' $1100 head work is about a 2.5% of his cars value.
Not to mention that most machine shops won't spend too much time on a 7M head, seeing as it'll be coming off every couple of thousand km anyway..
Lonewolf

What engine?
pulsar ET = e15et motor, no PFC available.
I'd sell the wolf and move to something like an EMS stinger or haltech/microtech if at all possible.
based on the dyno graphs of yours i saw, the motor combo looks good if it can be made reliable with a good tune.
The best tool for tuning your Wolf ECU is anything large and blunt that can be swung down with a lot of force.

HAHA cheers. Seriously i don't think the wolf is a bad ecu. I've had a play with it myself and i can't see why its a difficult ecu to tune. Once of course all the wiring and triggering is working correctly.
According to the wolf site Performance Unlimited are a tuner and there are a couple of others there. I'll just make up some DET cans and check for knock.

brockas cars really worth 45k???
so whats your point anyway
should he be spending 9 times as much as me for anything to do with his car??
is this your way of justifying expensive services??

wow joe gets pissy real easy.
anyways, Harris Engines just rebuilt my 1J head, fella there is a champ, he's done all of the head work ive had done, (1G head, an 18RG head, a 3SFE head, a 3SGTE head, a 7M head and a 1JZ now)
new valve stem seals, valve seats re cut, decked, acid dipped, bead blasted and re-shimmed cost $550.
I get pissy because all day I deal with fuckheads at work, and all night I deal with fuckheads on Antilag :)

all these machine shops work on bottom ends too?
ive been quoted just under 2k to
acid bath block
rebore
face block
grind crank
reseize rods
fit pistons to rod
and 8hrs labour to assemble the bottom end
is this reasonable?
joshg123

Not bad, most places will be at teh 8-100 per hour now. So yeh

I had the work in bold done for $800, so $1200 to assemble (12 hours!) is a little bit steep.
I know Applied to bottom ends as well, so give them a shot before you go ahead.

1 more thing guys,
rb bores are 86mm
i can source 86.5mm pistons but i can only find 86mm or 87mm headgaskets
which one do i go with? or do i need to find a set of 86 or 87mm pistons?
^^
newb thats not willin to pay 11-13k to a workshop for a rebuild
datsqik
06-06-2008, 04:15 AM
the 87mm gasket is fine for 86 or 86.5 bore. You'll probably have to go at least 86.5 on the bore to get a clean straight round bore.

datsquik beat me to it, 87mm will work perfectly.
You'll notice HKS only supply 87mm pistons, and only 87.5mm head gasket kits.

i got applied aswell to do my 26 head, the thing wasnt too healthy - some bent valves, and received some 'piston bashing'... grrr...
anyways, they made way for bigger cams, didnt port it (porting is around a grand...... depending on how much gets done), basically reconditioned the 26 head, was also around the 1000 mark.
mind you.. it took some time, but im in no rush.
if u want a complete motor built with applied automotive though, sumtimes takes some time.

i got quoted $1100 to pressure test and overhall my head
so all up im lookin 3k to get a motor built + parts cost

Sounds about right. I set aside 2k for machining, then 1k for assembly if you don't do it yourself.

oh wauyty
woops drinkingbad.
i got it reconmditionjed for aroiund 1100./. i think it wqas that much i put intop petes (the old wise guy at appplieds_) bank account..
it didnt include valves.... wait.. i got them off a mate (UD LOSE i think.. and it didnt include the step 2 HKS camshafts etc etc etc etc etc thats needed once u use 'aggressive' cams).
it was just the 1100 for the recondition.
good considering how fucken shithouse my head was.....and yes... it didnt take too long... the boys at applied got it done quickly.just that if u want porting or fullengine rebuilds - itll take some time(and money) lol
in the end -
applied know what theyre doing,,,m, some bloody good motors have been built by them.... ;0
and u mentioned 3grand? thats not to do a head.... if that includes as u said - "a ,motor" thats okay? id do anything to have my motor rebuilt for $3,000 lol
Sleekman
07-06-2008, 01:25 AM
$1000 machining (previous page)
$1100 overhaul head and pressure test
$1000 assembly (bottom end)
+ cost of parts
then put it back in myself
