hi guys, decided to do an engine conversion on my hilux, but unsure what engine to put into it, i was thinkin LS1??? or an sr20, coz my mate can get a good price on an sr20 for me.. question is, which one can i put in and have it engineered? and who can i talk to bout doing either of these conversions?

Anything can be engineered, just if u chuck a whopping great V8 etc in it you'd need to upgrade suspension and brakes to match etc. LS1's are in everything these days, good money to make lots of cheap power with. Theres a writeup on a green lux copping a bombed LS1 online somewhere, try searching it. But I'd imagine it to be a bit of a tight squeeze, maybe a smaller turbo engine would be easier. Also there's a company that does V6 conversion kits for all sorts of utes, maybe a stroked super6 with a bigger blower or turbo conversion?

this may help regarding LS1 in lux

Try giving an engineer a call and find out what he has written up permits for before and what has been a pain to pass...

Why not the JZ range of engines as an option?

How would they go fitting, not too long? 2j would be mint in a lux.
Not a bad question - what year and model etc is it?
Might limit what can fit.
There is numberous JZ powered lux's around Perth.
Where is Turner - he is into his mini trucks.

jz would fit in a lux brendan, but been done 2 death.. a few of the other truckers r puttin sr's in theirs.. n one of the boys is goin VQ30DET in his.. which is kinda the reason y im leanin towards ls1.. still waitin 2 hear back from the engineer..
So whats the goal?
To be different, or performance?
both TeeJay.. its a 1988 single cab lux with a diesel in it atm haha.. after hearin my mate is gunna put a vq30 in his 89 lux, i decided 2 go bigger, 2 b faster.. not driving it as much as i used 2, coz of company car, so i thought, instead of sellin it, y not build it up 2 b a show ute?

LS1 with cam and M112 or 122 blower ontop, torque monster and stacks of fun in a light ass Lux.

haha just a cam for me wil do.. put it this way, if i do go ls1, it will b same setup as waz has in his ute.. 11.2 in a vy ss ute manual, is pretty good, so it really should do much quicker in a lighter ute.. provided i get traction. :droul:

when i spoke 2 him last, he was gettin motor rebuilt for boost..

Current engine capacity?
If its petrol im guessing either 2.2lt or 1.8lt
1.8lt = 58kw
2.2lt = 69kw
He will need an engineers report what ever motor he decides to put in..
Anything over 30% power increase regardless capacity will need it..

Drop a 4agze in the i have been tellin so many hilux ppl to do this but they r all soft.
Would b an easy swap into a petrol hilux as they run a 4a-c engien or summin so should b a staright swap.
Supercharger for the win.

Depends which workshop builds em, I mean look at Clint.
As for the motor work, go by the LS1.com way of thinking. Build a huge stroker and dont do any suspension or driveline mods to make use of the power to run (almost) fast times lol.

Joes onto something there - turbo 3RZ will be unique, and make bullshit power.
Or one of the inline 6's from a cruiser etc, all love boost and make massive torque..
All Toyota, so making it work will be easier too.

Ls1 would be wicked in a ute weighing stuff all.
Burnout monster
Easy to source parts
If it were me i would go the 1jz however. Tough as
turbo 3RZ will be unique, and make bullshit power.
:idb:
Seen one of these in an unusual conversion into an S13. Pumped out around 750HP at the treads.
Solid top end, cast iron block, big capacity...perfect candidate for a big snail and some nice internals :)

A 2JZ would be the go in a lux if it will fit.

go the 2jz, its been done be4 plenty of knowledge on how to do it and it will make more than enough power when you chuck a single ( gt35r ) onto it
whats the 3rz out of??? sounds interesting..

LS2 "crate motors" can be bought complete with gearbox for around 6-7grand...
consider that as an option.. mind u consider the budget for mounting and other custom related bullshit that goes with it
thommo
05-04-2008, 11:26 PM
well what kind of budget are you looking at for the conversion ?
do you want manual or auto ?
2jz for example
3000 aristo halfcut ( auto )
1500 microtech ecu
500 intercooler and piping
1000 3inch exhaust
300 in hoses and fittings ( power steering, air cond etc etc)
2-300 for engine / gearbox mounts
4-500 tailshaft fitted with new yoke balance etc
7k already without labour
if you wanted to go single turbo your then looking at another 1500-2000 for turbo 500-1000 for external wastegate and anywhere from 400-1500 for a single turbo manifold ( ebay - 6booost mani ) and injectors 550c US supra ones cheaper but still 500-800 for injectors then 044 pump 300ish
so thats another 3-5k again
plenty of things to take into consideration
edit: and since its diesel im sure you would have to do a complete new fuel system and fuel tank which i dunno the costings of
is there any sort of brake upgrades available for the hilux of that year as thats probably the first mod you should do! be4 unleashing 400+hp onto some drum brakes
whats the 3rz out of??? sounds interesting..
Out of the Toyota Hilux and Prado....just your average 2.7 litre 4 cylinder petrol engine :)

in all honesty, there is no budget haha.. but i dont wanna b payin 40grand for somethin that wont go 11 second timeslips haha.. i spoke 2 c-red n they said i would be looking at round 25 grand for engine conversion for a ls1 in the lux.. all depends on if i can get in engineered..
If you want to go the LS1 conversion...check out Castlemaine Rod Shop to see if they make an engine mount and trans adaptor kit for your model Hilux.
I know heaps of places do Chev V8 conversions for Landcruiser, 4Runner/Surf and Hilux, but its normally the 4wd versions they convert....the kits might work for 2wd vehicles also.
Definitely worth enquiring about if you're serious!

Holy shit. What exactly do you get for that?
Agree with Joe, check out http://www.rodshop.com.au/ and see how you go
not sure waz.. didnt really ask haha.. ideally, if i was goin to go ls1, the first place i would be going to is waperf.. only coz ive heard so much good things come from that place, waz is a perfect example.. if they can actually fit the ls1 that is..

you would have to set a budget but, cos if ur gonna pay some stupid price for an engine conversion you might aswel buy one thats already been done either in wa or over east and still be payin under 20k for the whole car

I dunno if WAPerf would have the time/patience/room to do such a conversion but I am only assuming there, I could well be wrong.
www.v6conversions.com.au I think is the website if you wanted to put a turbo/super6 in the ute.
VQ30DE(T?) is in Tim from Sikemrex's lux already. He was doing turbos a while ago but I dunno how that went...
2JZ's work, for many reasons and you get to keep the toyota heritage as well..
Things that have been done before are worth following for simplicity and that they've proven they work.
3sgte might be something different for ya, or the 1uzfe idea with twin blowers would be awesome!
ah true.. got another option in mind, but not as powerful.. ecotec v6 with a blower on top.. now thinkin of just keeping it as a cruise truck, but has killer paint n shit..

You can still get those engines to go hard. Nowhere near as hard as an LS1, and you'll spend more, but still...
new trd supercharged lux motor! gota love the add 4 it
