What type of afm is it.
Does it have a rectangle plug looking thing inside a round tube.
DONT spray anything on it, that will fuck it up.

1JZs have no problems with AFMs, perhaps replace your motor with one of them?!

Its the wire type inside a round tube (green sticker rb20det afm). Are you sure about this?
That is then not a AFM (Air Flow Meter) . A AFM has a flapper door , ie Toyota 3S-GTE Gt-Four , MR2 , Mk3 Supra , Porsche 944 etc . You have a MAF (Mass Airflow Sensor) a hotwire setup . The best way to clean it is with CO Contact cleaner , made by CRC for about $19 from Repco etc . Carby cleaner can harm some plastics , not what i would use . Contact cleaner will not , and this is designed for that application . MAF's loose thier accuracy when wet with oil , suck as a K&N filter etc etc .

Probably because 1JZ's have no AFM , no MAF , only MAP based sensoring .

Fuck off mayne you dickhead. Last thing i ever do for you.
Yeh Asked my forman at work today. He said you can clean it with contact cleaner but make sure the engine is turned off.
Yeh i agree with "SAF" the oil in the filters fucks em up . We had heaps of Problems with 3.0 Litre Pootrols with the same fault. The oil in the filter was fucken them up.

Even better , remove from engine bay all together , and spray out over clean workbench so you can see visually that no more dirty contact cleaner solvents are coming out . Spray a little RP7 / WD40 / CRC onto the MAF plug terminals upon assembly , and your good to go again .
So what do the Patols run ? . A wet cotton type filter ? . Hmm , interesting , yes its allways been a issue with the K&N , UNI etc wet filters , but i guess its a small price to pay . I had to clean mine in the Echo last week , had a 2200-2500rpm slight flatspot , cleaned the temp prong , the hotwires , re-installed and its as good as new again , no more flatspot .

Thanks everyone, excellent response. I'll go grab some Contact cleaner after work. I have removed the 'maf' from the engine bay so it should be pretty easy :)
** update, went and bought some, not cheap at $19,99 a can hahaha but all good:) **

yeh they did have a wet element but not any more nissan changed it to a dry one.
Yeh also they get hell clogged up cos the intake to the airbox comes from inside the guard and picks up all the shit. Nice one NISSAN
Hmm , Nissan arent known for well laid out air intake setups . Even my mate Nissan Terrano TD , after a 4wding arvo at alkamos , i had maybe half a teaspoon of sand in my airbox , he had allways about 1/4 cup :/
