View Full Version : Tell us your "classic" albums
Chatting to a mate before - I thought this would make a good thread.
Pretty much, what albums do you find classic and why? To me something you find classic is something that helped shape your taste in music etc. Its also a good chance for people to bring up some albums you may of not heard in some time , good reminder to drag them out for a listen :)
Simple format : Artist/Album/Why
Ill start.
Snoop Doggy Dogg
Doggystyle - 1993
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51V6XWE8PXL._AA240_.jpg
Why : This was the first CD I ever bought, back in 1994. I dont even know why I bought it back then, I was only just getting into music. Pretty sure I had heard one of the songs of it, and decided it was pretty cool.
Anyhow, this is now 14 years old, and I can still its in my top 3 albums ever. I could listen to it all day every day without issue. Snoops first, and unfortunately best album bought rap to the masses with a mix of great beats, ripper lyrics and awesome marketing. Despite its age, the songs still feel fresh. Best of all, it was real - not a ploy by a record company to sell more albums. He was from the streets, he did keep it real, and the album reflected it.
To me, its my number one classic album.
_________________________________________________-
Number Two:
Notorious B.I.G
Life After Death - 1997 Disk 1 of 2 - 1997
http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/ciu/51/61/ea45124128a01ef55b808010._AA240_.L.jpg
To me, I count disc 1 and 2 as two seperate albums. I do no rate disc two at all. Disc one however, is simply brilliant. Biggies brilliant voice and flow bring some classic tracks to the fore. Hypnotize is my favourite track of all time, and it features on this disk. Once again its real rap, not contrived b.s to sell albums to the masses. A tragic shame he was killed before he could better this effort, but to go out with such a outstanding effort means he will never be forgotten.
Remember guys, this is all personal opinion so keep replies civil. Look forward to hearing some extremely varied responses.

For trance i would have to say the all time classic for me would have to be gatecrasher "red" and gatecrasher "black"
I'm with you TJ....I've got both albums, and they both crank even to this day. I can listen to them over and over and never get tired of them :D

This is a hard one for me to decide, so i'll write about both of them :)
Stanton Warriors - The stanton sessions
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000EYK2JG.01._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Got this in 2003.
What I like about it? The underground sound and mixture of garage, breakbeat, chunky bass lines and vocal sampling. MC moose adds to the set, not detracts.
A Tribe called quest - The low end theory
http://image.listen.com/img/170x170/4/1/8/6/386814_170x170.jpg
Got this back in 97 and have enjoyed it ever since.
What I like about it? Instrumental, Jazzy, Distinctive funky bass lines and abstract catchy lyrics.

agree with dark side of the moon - gets played in entirety at least once a month by me.
the who - "tommy" is another concept album that i love.
deep purple - "machine head". i have this complete album as one big .mp3, and i listen to it this way all the time. Opening up with "highway star" like it does, songs like "lazy", "space truckin", and of course "smoke on the water"....classic.
metallica - "ride the lightning" was the first album of theirs that i heard as a little 10yr old courtesy of my cousin, and 6 years later i was in the moshpit at EntCent seeing them live. "Fade to black", "the call of Ktulu", "for whom the bell tolls" are all on this.
tool - "aenima" - i thank god i heard this album, as it got me hooked on one of the most mind-blowing bands of all time. although i listen to "lateralus" more often these days, songs like "46&2", "stinkfist" and "aenima" are just huge.
muse - i'm gonna call "hullabaloo" here, even though its a live album. featuring tracks off both "showbiz" and "origin of symmetry", being a live album allows just how hard these guys rock, and just how much of a genius matt bellamy is, to really shine through.
radiohead - music critics will usually list "ok computer" as their best, but "the bends" was the first album of theirs that i heard. either way, i flew to melbourne in 2004 to see them.
mogwai - i first came across these guys through the "28 days later" soundtrack, and it prompted me to get "mr beast", which has now become an album that i throw on regularly at night and listen to before/while falling asleep.
pendulum - "hold your colour". having never really been much of a dance/techno/d'n'b fan, this album really made me sit up and listen, and i've since expanded my music taste.
tom waits - "asylum years". there were any number of his early albums i could have named here - "bounced checks", "blue valentine"...either way, this guy is just the epitome of cool.

and i totally forgot to mention nirvana "nevermind". i'm not even going to go into why, as im sure most people have heard it all before.
and one last one...eels - "beautiful freak". i fell in love with this album for a while. i dunno what it is, something about E's voice, and the way he words his songs, kinda insecure without being weak/emo, really hits something with me.

Some great Mentions already, low end theory and Beat Rhymes and Life are very up there for me. but i didnt catch onto it until much later in my life when i was 13 or so, a bit before my time.
I'll try keep em short and sweet. too many to lst em all, raised on listening and playing music.
My FIRST Hip Hop Album when i was 10.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y189/Slip_87SX/freshprince-rockthehouse-albumcover.jpg
YEEEEEH BOI! Mofo's KNOW!
Possibly the most influencial in my listening throughout the 90's.
The Roots!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y189/Slip_87SX/2668.jpg
Illidelph Halflife. Possibly the grittiest of all Roots Productions, tasteful, nothing overly gangsta. These guys lead me to Rawkus records and Def Jam.
The Man Himself. Enough Said. When i was playing Trumpet throughout my childhood and teens this guy forged alot of my taste.
Miles Davis - A Kind Of Blue
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y189/Slip_87SX/bigdaddyMiles.jpg
Often Referred to as THE dirty south album. Big Place in my listening.
Goodie Mob - Soul Food.

Outkasts Best. Back in the day! Atliens!

and Finally... the most revered... also known as the "High Priestess of Soul"... Nina Simone. My mum had me on this shit since i was like 6. Food for the Soul when your down.

I can never ever get sick of listening to this, I have bought it twice as my first copy got scratched from always being in the car, even have it on vinyl.
Favorite song - Bumper (Plump's Remix) - Elektronauts
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31KVCM7707L._AA240_.jpg
Remedy - Basement Jaxx
This has always been one of my favourites since highschool, I dont thrash it much as I use to but I will never forget their set at the 2000 BDO in the Boiler room.
Favorite song - Red Alert
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/416EEES5ATL._AA240_.jpg
Beams - The Presets
This is another album thats never far from the CD player, after about 2 years of thrashing still love it to death. They were my highlight at this years BDO and can't wait to see them with Daft Punk in Dec.

Machine Head - Deep Purple
Classic genuine heavy metal unlike the pulp that was pumped out by wannabe metal bands
Quatro - Suzi Q in my opinion the first Woman of rock (and as an oldie i fantasized over her as a young-un back in the early 70's

I'm a big hardcore metal fan so...
Poison the Well - The Opposite of December, a Season of Seperation. One of the most underrated bands in the world today in my opinion. But their first album is an absolute classic. Each track is angrier than the last and you feel like you're a part of the band, feeling evey emotion possible. Got some killer tracks like WISH FOR WINGS THAT WORK, NERDY and SLICE PAPER WRIST.
Atreyu - The Curse. Metalcore would not be the same without this album. As you listen to the songs in order, it kinda sounds like the whole album is about the beginning to the end of a Vampire's life. Although Atreyu claim its about their lives. Best tracks: THE CRIMSON, BLEEDING MASCARA and RIGHT SIDE OF THE BED.
