Trying to decide between a Bosch 040 and Bosch 044 fuel pump. Engine is
rb20det about to be heavly modified with 650cc injectors. Does anyone have an opinion on these pumps or can suggest a different brand or model??

Cheers

i personally like nismo or tomei direct replacement pumps they cost a heap extra but no modifying to the cradle is needed

040 will be easier to fit and if your aim is 320 rwhp or under be perfect pump for job.

044 harder to fit but will do 550rwhp.

The nismo / tomei good options as mentioned but do cost more.

If your looking for big hp go an 044 and dont' look back.

you can get a 023 which is pretty much that same as a 044 but its the internal version. That what i just stuck in my bro skiz and if you are good with your hands itsnt hard to fit.

yeah but the 023 flows about 200hp (flywheel n.a) more than the 040 and its roughly the same size and same price.

044 is internal or external.

i have never seen a 044 listed as an internal, its a in line external pump.
You can possible mount it intank but you would have to get some fittings to make up a pick up.

The 023 is the internal version of the 044 and the base of the pump is open as it is its pickup.

040 is also internal but doesnt have the flow of a 023

044 is internal or external.

023 and 040 with open bottom don't work in some cars...they can cause massive fuel surge and starvation, in Subaru's for example. In this case, you clamp the fuel sock to a piece of hose, which goes over the inlet nipple of the fuel pump.

not doubting you but where have you seen that the 044 is internal aswell?

I've googled 044 and internal and nothing pops up, its only external.

According to the offical bosch site the part number is 0 580 254 044 and that lines up with an inlet of M18x1.5, all the internal pumps are listed as "open base" like i said, so this is clearly an inline pump.

So the 044 is an inline pump, and technically if you got the fittings (or the sock) you can put it inside your tank and it would work but it is designed as an inline external pump, at least thats how i have understood it.

For a start, I've seen it in my fuel tank. I had it originally mounted external but I got sick of the surge tank, so I then mounted it internally. I've installed about 10 in WRXs myself...all internal :)

The 80 or so 044s I've sold in the past 24 months have mostly been fitted in-tank.

An 044 is "inline" i.e. it has an inlet and an outlet fitting, same as a Bosch 984 and Bosch 910 (in the case of 044, its screw-in fittings required for inlet and outlet, the 984 has screw in outlet only and built in barbed inlet and the 910 has built in barbed fittings inlet and outlet). I've sold 100 or so 984s and 910s, and they have mostly been fitted in-tank.

They can definitely be fitted INTERNAL or EXTERNAL. They will work fine either way, and when fitted in-tank, you need to modify the fuel sock to fit the inlet side of the pump. Can be done by threading the fuel sock connector and screwing it into a speedflow/earls fitting that screws into the 044, or by using hose clamps and hose that attaches to a screw-in barbed fitting (most common way).

The 040 and 023 are open bottom internal only, can't be fitted external and can't be fitted in some cars where the tank shape and pump bracket won't allow the pump to sit 1cm off the bottom of the tank...in my experience, any higher than that and they start surging during cornering.

:)

Yeah sweet, i thought you were saying that there was two different versions of the 044, i knew you could mount them internally.

But in logic the 044 is an external pump regardless if its mounted in the tank itself.

A 040 has an open base so it cannot be mounted outside the tank so it must be internal. Like you said the 044 doesnt have the open base and can be mounted externally, so i would call that an external pump, but thats just me.

Also every site that sells them list them as an external pump, but its late and i give up.

Obviously you've got a leak somewhere, because Bosch Motorsport pumps generally don't smell.

i had an 040 in mine for about 18 months and it never stunk of fuel and it wasn't noisy (rubber mounts help)
never had a problem with it either and will continue using it with the new motor:)

That would be the lines you used, not the pump.

late reply but u ever considered a walbro??big hp cars in states seem to opt to running 3 intank walbros so they cant be crap like most people believe

1 of which would be capable of 500 hp on its own

Joe

The guys in the States dont believe in anything BUT Walbro pumps, I'm assuming because they are made there and they are dirt cheap (less than 100 bucks each over there)

A few of the big HP WRXs on the NASIOC forums are running dual in-tank Walbros, and whenever I suggest a Bosch 044 to someone looking for a fuel pump option, it falls on deaf ears most of the time.

wonder why - surely 2 044s would be cheaper then 3 walbros..

not to mention titan now make billet fuel pump brackets to mount 3 walbros in tank
