Luda's a big player in the commercial game by my books, he walks that fine line between commercial and keeping it honest to the foundations.
Curtis is the third studio album by rapper 50 Cent.
The album will be released on September 11, 2007.
Initially, 50 Cent's 2007 album was supposed to
be Before I Self Destruct, however, he decided to
push back its release date to 2008, and to release
Curtis in 2007 instead.
The album's title was changed twice. The first time,
it was changed from "Curtis" to "Curtis S.S.K.".
The "S.S.K.", which stood for "SoundScan Killer",
was intended to show the pressure 50 Cent feels to
succeed. The second time, it was changed back to
"Curtis".
In July 2007, Kanye West changed the release date
of Graduation, his third album, from September 18, 2007,
to the same release date as Curtis, September 11, 2007.
This means that the albums will go head-to-head and
compete for better sales against each other. 50 Cent
claimed that if Graduation sold more records than
Curtis, he would stop releasing solo albums.
However, he later dispelled his comments.
so who will it be? Kanye or 50 :P
doriae86
05-09-2007, 10:46 AM
50 will win the sales race - he always does
Eric B & Rakim - Paid In Full
Ooooh yeah.
What about The Roots? I can listen to "Dont Say Nothin" about 10 times in a row without getting tired of it.
Way too many rappers gone commercial now, although Ice Cube the other night was kickin it old school for pretty much his entire set, that was a throw back to the times when those rappers really had something to say because they were living it. The NWA shit was too good, and although most class that as commercial, you cant deny they really do love their roots and where they came from.
end of the day, i dont care who is real and who isnt, the more good tunes the better.
im downloading 50 atm, see how it is tonight!
Syncope

The Roots for sure. Not many hip hop "groups" going around any more. None that are really relevant anyway. This Roots video pretty much sums up the whole scene; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8l31heyYxQ
Even Kanye disappointed with his latest. Its good, probably great, but Late Registration/College Dropout it is not. As for the whole sales race thing? Brilliant marketing.

Yeh the Roots are a classy group. seen em twice in perth and cant fault them.
Black thought and ?uestlove are constantly evolving with thier appetitive for becoming accomplished MC's as opposed to 'Dope Mc's'... so they're moving away from the griitty sound they had back in the day... e.g. Illidelph Halflife... and are evolving and improving as they're grasp on musical composition grows with experience...
When they perform live... its a live sound... not a attempt to reproduce the same prescence they have on wax...
they're mental, really talented. but then again... people have a tendancy to say they're going mainstream... which isn't true. it's just natural progression into a more sophisticated sound as they're actually muscially educated. been to Uni and shit.
and they always... on every new album... regardless of thier new sounds... put togather a hard gritty hip hop track to show they can still do it.
just my opinion, but i aggree with Syncope, they're one of the few true hip hop groups going around with a large prescence in the mainstream.
Binary Star, have a gander. very hip hop, yet very recent.
good new hip hop, its out there, in large quantities, just stashed in crevices that the larger commercial scene forces it into. just have to know where to look ;)

yeh i dunno, One Be Lo has lost some interest apparently.
The last Binary Star activity was really only the solo work by Senim Silla.
album: Senim Silla - The Name The Motto The Outcome - 2007.
they've been stagnant to say the least, but theres word they're looking to release a new Binary Star album feb 2008.
Senim Silla is trying, some say struggling, but they've been bumping heads all 2007 for this new album. so high expectations.
Yeh ive heard many speak highly of Cunninlynguists, i'll get onto em tonight. any albums in particular?

I downloaded both coming into it with a completely unbiased opinion.
Not that big a fan of either, but:
Kanye > 50 Cent.
50's album sounds so monotomous I pretty much nodded off half way through, but at least for once he doesn't spend 90% of the time talking about how much money he's got and what he's going to buy with that money.
Kanye's album isn't as good as his previous 2, but I have a feeling his will grow on me while 50's I'll struggle to listen to again.

You may have a lot of bitches but I got much more"
NWA, Naughty by Nature, public enemy, Run DMC, Coolio, Warren G, etc.
i hear a good hip hop/rap tune once every 3 months now, 50 will never surpass the dent "In Da Club" made in hip hop history, and hes been slowly going down hill ever since, his newer shit sounds like poop.
personal opinion of mine, of course.

I will be at Talib up the front with my rekkids. Heard rumours of Mos Def later in the year too. Pitty they didn't come together for a blackstar gig.
Kanye is > 50 cent. Can't Tell me Nothing is a pretty dope track, especially the beat. Ive never been a fan of 50 cent. I guess he's good for what he does.. popular music on a gangster tip.
Still Common's album is tighter than both of them in terms of releases in this year. Concious hip hop is real hip hop. Still waiting to cop Ear Drum on vinyl. More or Less and Country Cousins are hot tracks. Also check out Mr J Medeiros (of The Procussions - Rawkus) debut LP 'Of Gods and Girls'. Socially concious hip hop with dope beats for the win. Also check out Kenn Starr's Starr Status from 06 - one of the best albums of the past couple of years. Production from illmind. Bring on Little Brother and Foreign Exchange new joints. Production wise DJ Jazzy Jeffs - The Return of the Magnificent (aka The Return of Hip Hop) is the best LP to drop this year.
Hip Hop is far from dead.
Peace

Hip Hop is far from dead.
Amen.
Common's latest work is indeed a fkn good listen. MUCH better than his effort with 'Be' from 05....but has nothing on 'Like Water for Chocolate' or 'Reflection'...imo.
Yeh Kayne, Mos Def, Talib, Common... most of Rawkus records, Def Jam and familia are shining these days for the Hip Hop community in the more mainstream audience.
another recent goodie, GhostFace Killa... 'FishScale'.... fucking bombed like the streets of gaza...
Like Water for Chocolate will always be on heavy rotation on the 1s and 2s. Thelonius is one of dillas best pieces of work man.
As for this whole kanye thing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-631TgPP2s
His meltdown at the VMA's after he didnt win. It's MTV, who gives a shit. He'll probably pick up a couple of grammys again anyways and beat Common, just like what happened when Be and Late Rego were released.
Even though they're tight and from the same G.O.O.D label, I hope Common picks up mass grammys for Finding Forever.
Ya'll who are into Kanye, BUY Common's Finding Forever. Majority of tracks produced by Kanye with help from Will.I.Am, Devo D, cuts by DJ Premier and one of the last beats created by the late and great JDilla. Common is the best MC in my opinion. One of the most intelligent cats in the game, and has been since the early 90s.

They released an album in '06 (Feedback) and had the track with Dave Matthews Band (Work it Out).
They've split up not all that long ago, pretty sure their last ever show was in Perth?
Yeh good vibes was their last show here (minus cut chemist). It was an awesome set, crowd errupted when they performed 'a day at the races'. They rocked hard every visit to perth. They will surely be missed.
Man im loving the graduation cover art hey. Takashi Murakami designed it all, hes the dude who overlooks on all of Kanye's fashion/style in the music vids. I went to planet today and looked through 50 cents cd booklet. Only thing going for that album is a half nakid Ciara on a couple of the pages.
On another note, I'm not liking moshtix at all. Went to get some Kweli tix and they gave me a key card. What happened to the good old days of actually having a physical ticket for a concert ahah, geez.

That argument with 'kids' hurts my head!
Just so you know, and for all the fans of 'I Get Money'
here is the vocal sample for the track:

Easily one of my favourite 'old skool' tracks of all time.
Dope beat and an ill flow :)
Artist is Audio Two, track name Top Billin.
That is when hip hop was hip hop.
I love Kanye and all the work he has done production wise, beat wise and lyrically but I do have to say that Stronger is just pure shit - I hope the rest of the album is better ;)
Talib Kweli will always be the shit! The new album is great besides the country cousins track, that is just shit, not the shit :)
